Book Synopsis Value Chains in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Sören Scholvin
Download or read book Value Chains in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Sören Scholvin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development largely depends on how given places participate in global economic processes. The contributions to this book address various features of the integration of sub-Saharan Africa into the world economy via value chains, so as to explain corresponding challenges and opportunities. The book deals with five issues that have not been covered adequately in scientific debates: first, policies are essential to promote value chains and increase their impact on development; second, value chains are diverse, and the variance between them has major economic and political implications; third, regional value chains appear to constitute a viable alternative to global ones (or, at least, are complementary to them), promising better developmental outcomes for the Global South; fourth, political and socio-economic factors are important considerations for a complete assessment of value chains; fifth, cities and city regions are also crucial objects of study in seeking to achieve a comprehensive assessment of value chains.

This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quick Response (QR) policy is a market-driven business strategy in which supply chain members work together to react quickly to volatile market demand. Nowadays, with advances in information technologies (such as RFID and ERP systems), new challenges and opportunities arise for the application of QR. This handbook explores QR extensively with a view to discovering innovative QR measures that can help tackle the observed and emerging challenges. The book is organized into four parts, which include chapters on analytical modeling and analyses, information technologies, cases, reviews, and applications. This handbook provides new analytical and empirical results with valuable insights, which will not only help supply chain agents to better understand the latest applications of QR in business, but also help practitioners and researchers to know how to improve the effectiveness of QR using innovative methods.

Book Synopsis Collaboration in the Digital Age by : Kai Riemer
Download or read book Collaboration in the Digital Age written by Kai Riemer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how digital technologies enable collaboration as a way for individuals, teams and businesses to connect, create value, and harness new opportunities. Digital technologies have brought the world closer together but also created new barriers and divides. While it is now possible to connect almost instantly and seamlessly across the globe, collaboration comes at a cost; it requires new skills and hidden ‘collaboration work’, and the need to renegotiate the fair distribution of value in multi-stakeholder network arrangements. Presenting state-of-the-art research, case studies, and leading voices in the field, the book provides academics and professionals with insights into the diverse powers of collaboration in the digital age, spanning collaboration among professionals, organisations, and consumers. It brings together contributions from scholars interested in the collaboration of teams, cooperatives, projects, and new cooperative systems, covering a range of sectors from the sharing economy, health care, large project businesses to public sector collaboration.
Book Synopsis A Structuralist Assessment of Technology Policies by : Richard G. Lipsey
Download or read book A Structuralist Assessment of Technology Policies written by Richard G. Lipsey and published by Industrie Canada. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study applies two distinct economic paradigms to a selection of government policies designed to influence technological change, and compares the results of the two approaches. The neoclassical model provides a precise set of objectives for policies and programs, and a means of assessing whether or not they have contributed gains. Structuralist-evolutionary theory starts from different assumptions about the behaviour of the economy, and reaches different conclusions about both the role of policy and the substance of policy evaluation. The programs evaluated are the Defence Industry Productivity Program (DIPP), the Industrial Research and Development Incentives Act (IRDIA), the Program for the Advancement of Industrial Technology (PAIT), the Enterprise Development Program (EDP), and the Industrial and Regional Development Program (IRDP).

Book Synopsis Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth by : Marcio Cruz
Download or read book Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth written by Marcio Cruz and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senegal, like all African countries, needs better and more jobs for its growing population. The main message of Digital Senegal for Inclusive Growth is that broader use of productivity-enhancing technologies by households and enterprises can generate such jobs, including for lower-skilled people. Adoption of better technologies can support both Senegal’s short-term objective of economic recovery and its vision of economic transformation with more inclusive growth. But this is not automatic. This book leverages a novel survey instrument that measures adoption of technologies at the firm level. Results from this survey show that there is a large average technological gap in Senegal relative to firms in Brazil, in the range of 36 and 30 percent for extensive (whether firms use it at all) and intensive (the most frequently applied) uses of better technologies such as for business administration. Except for a small number of firms, enterprises still mostly use manual, analog technologies to perform general and sector specific business functions. Micro-size informal enterprises lag even further. The benefits from technology adoption are significant. Digital technologies are an enabler of economy-wide productivity and jobs growth by catalyzing adoption of complementary technologies, including many not accessible without digital infrastructure. For households, mobile internet coverage is associated with 14 percent higher total consumption, as well as a 10 percent lower extreme poverty rate—and jobs with higher earnings. Firms with better technologies have higher levels of productivity, generate more jobs, and increase the share of lower-skilled workers on their payroll, on average: an increase in technological sophistication across general business functions that the firm uses most intensively, such as using standard software rather than writing by hand for business administration, is associated with a 14 percent higher jobs growth rate. For these and other inclusive growth benefits to be realized, Senegal should focus on ensuring availability of affordable digital infrastructure and implementing targeted incentives to promote use by firms of better technologies as well as policies to narrow deepening digital divides across enterprises and households.
