Download or read book Conscience written by Alice Mattison and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades ago in Brooklyn, three girls demonstrated against the Vietnam War, and each followed a distinct path into adulthood. Helen became a violent revolutionary. Val wrote a controversial book, essentially a novelization of Helen’s all-too-short but vibrant life. And Olive became an editor and writer, now comfortably settled with her husband, Griff, in New Haven. When Olive is asked to write an essay about Val’s book, doing so brings back to the forefront Olive and Griff’s tangled histories and their complicated reflections on that tumultuous time in their young lives.Conscience, the dazzling new novel from award-winning author Alice Mattison, paints the nuanced relationships between characters with her signature wit and precision. And as Mattison explores the ways in which women make a difference—for good or ill—in the world, she elegantly weaves together the past and the present, and the political and the personal.

Book excerpt: Recent scholarship on Śaivism has significantly expanded our knowledge of the religious dimensions of Medieval Śaiva movements. However, the philosophical aspects displayed by some of the texts produced in these milieux remain largely unrecognized. The present study helps fill this lacuna by exploring the sophisticated and original philosophical system elaborated by the Kashmiri Śaiva nondualists Utpaladeva (fl. c. 925-975) and Abhinavagupta (fl. c. 975-1025). The book shows that this system cannot be reduced to a mere scriptural exegesis and examines the genesis of the main concepts found in the Pratyabhijñā (“Recognition”) philosophy while taking into account the complexity of the philosophical field (already occupied by various currents, Buddhist as well as Brahmanical) in which Utpaladeva’s thought was developed.

Book Synopsis The Emergence of Tolerance in the Dutch Republic by :
Download or read book The Emergence of Tolerance in the Dutch Republic written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fruit of the colloquium "Les Pays-Bas, carrefour de la tolérance aux Temps Modernes", held in Wassenaar, the Netherlands, in 1994. Toleration in the strict sense of the word was very much against the grain of sixteenth-century European history. This volume charts the emergence and vicissitudes of the concept of tolerance and its practical implications in the Dutch Republic, from the revolt against Spain in the sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. The various contributions, all by distinguished scholars, address such issues as Erasmus' views on toleration, the relation between tolerance and irenism, and the contemporary intellectual debate about toleration in the Dutch Republic. This important volume will prove indispensable to historians of the Low Countries, students of humanism and all those interested in the intellectual history of the 16th-18th centuries.
Book Synopsis Negative Knowledge by : Sebastian Hüsch
Download or read book Negative Knowledge written by Sebastian Hüsch and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of Modernity was accompanied by a radical criticism of traditional metaphysics. In particular since the 20th century, rationality is predominantly conceived of as positivistic and scientistic, reducing reality to what is positively knowable. The price to pay is the cutting out of any kind of phenomenon of negativity. The present volume explicitly explores the philosophical and epistemological potential of negativity. The contributions brought together in this book tackle the question of negativity from historical as well as from systematical perspectives. From different angles, they defend the claim that philosophical approaches recurring to negativity can build a non-reductive conceptualization of rationality, and thus offer a valuable contribution to the orientation of humankind in the 20th and 21st century. This volume contains contributions in English, French, and German.

Book Synopsis The Subject in Question by : Stephen Priest
Download or read book The Subject in Question written by Stephen Priest and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Subject in Question provides a fascinating insight into a debate between two of the twentieth century's most famous philosophers - Jean-Paul Sartre and Edmund Husserl - over the key notions of conscious experience and the self. Sartre's The Transcendence of the Ego, published in 1937, is a major text in the phenomenological tradition and sets the course for much of his later work. The Subject in Question is the first full-length study of this famous work and its influence on twentieth-century philosophy. It also investigates the relationship between Sartre's ideas and the earlier work of Descartes and Kant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains many of the papers presented at a four-day conference held by the Husserl-Archives in Leuven in April 2009 to c- memorate the one hundred and ?ftieth anniversary of Edmund Husserl’s birth. The conference was organized to facilitate the critical evaluation of Husserl’s philosophical project from various perspectives and in light of the current philosophical and scienti?c climate. Still today, the characteristic tension between Husserl’s concrete and detailed descriptions of consciousness, on the one hand, and his radical philosophical claim to ultimate truth and certainty in thinking, feeling, and acting, on the other, calls for a sustained re?ection on the relation between a Husserlian phenomenological philosophy and philosophy in general. What can phenomenological re?ection contribute to the ongoing discussion of certain perennial philosophical questions and which phi- sophical problems are raised by a phenomenological philosophy itself? In addition to addressing the question of the relation between p- nomenology and philosophy in general, phenomenology today cannot avoid addressing the nature of its relation to the methods and results of the natural and human sciences. In fact, for Husserl, phenomenology is not just one among many philosophical methods and entirely unrelated to the sciences. Rather, according to Husserl, phenomenology should be a “?rst philosophy” and should aim to become the standard for all true science.
Book Synopsis The Yoga S_tra of Patañjali : Translations and Commentary by : Wim van den Dungen
Download or read book The Yoga S_tra of Patañjali : Translations and Commentary written by Wim van den Dungen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers translations of the 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali in English, French and Dutch, as well as a commentary from the perspective of a practicing Buddhist. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali is a remarkable short text of about 1200 words, codifying the best yoga practices in 195 Sanskrit aphorisms. Yoga became one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In contrast to Jainism and Buddhism, it always kept close to the 'Vedas'. These crucial scriptures speak of three paths to freedom from ignorance and the suffering it brings: Ritual, Mystical Devotion and Yoga. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali turned Hindu Yoga systematic and close to direct yogic experience. Besides a critique of the eternal substances of seer (the self) and seen (Nature), the commentary also identifies correspondences between Jhāna Yoga and the various types of union (samādhi) mentioned by Patañjali and compares constraint (the application of concentration, contemplation and union) with the Nine Stages of Calm Abiding.
Book Synopsis Par-Delà le Mental by : Bernard De Montréal
Download or read book Par-Delà le Mental written by Bernard De Montréal and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Ethics of Description by : Matt Reeck
Download or read book Ethics of Description written by Matt Reeck and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics of Description: The Anthropological Dispositif and French Modern Travel Writing follows the development of a minor tradition in French literature where metropolitan authors traveling abroad demonstrate their awareness of the ethical conundrums of representing world peoples. During the colonial–modern era, currents of anthropological thought and representational practice are identifiable throughout society, and across literature, the arts, and the sciences. Collectively, they can be theorized as belonging to a dispositif, the anthropological dispositif. The modernization of anthropology serves as an ambivalent interlocutor for the realizations of the writers studied in this book about the difficulties of describing cultural realities that lie largely outside their ken. Anthropology motivates new literary representational strategies that are, alternatively, in keeping with scientific mandates or operate against them. Forty images are analyzed alongside literary works. A postcolonial chapter shows how the ethical awareness of the colonial–modern authors studied have impacted minority self-representation in contemporary France.
Book Synopsis Meditation on the Divine Legitimacy of Man by : Bogdan J. Wnuk
Download or read book Meditation on the Divine Legitimacy of Man written by Bogdan J. Wnuk and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditation is the result of departing from and returning to Christianity. It is about tasting again the “salt” of Jesus’ teachings and rejoicing in imitating him, in our eternal life, which, for us “christians”, begins down here, on earth, and will continue on in heaven... The Catholic Church, which I served, as an altar boy from the age of 6 to the age of 18, made me a legalistic “robot” with little or no free will. I was engulfed in guilt and despair that I will never amount to anything good spiritually. One day, I quit trying to become a “good” catholic and went on a journey of discovery of other more “attractive” religions... only to find along the way that Jesus is the way!
