The research methods used are mainly geared towards empirical research, and there mostly towards survey research and experimentation. Experimentation involves most often simulated behaviour in a laboratory, which allows the experimental manipulation of possible causes of behaviour which would not be possible in real life. Others have concentrated on certain subtopics, such as the psychology of the labour market (e. g. , Baxter, 1988; Pelzmann, 1986).

Book excerpt: Les performances dans le domaine des compétences sociales dans la vie quotidienne ont été examinées sur une population d'enfants présentant un trouble spécifique du développement du langage oral (TSOL) ou un trouble envahissant du développement (TEO). Ces deux populations ont été comparées à des enfants normaux, des déficients intellectuels et des dyslexiques. Les résultats obtenus chez les enfants TSOL (qui se situent à un stade intermédiaire entre les TEO et les sujets contrôles) confirment qu’il existe un lien entre les habiletés langagières et les capacités de mentalisation, le développement de la TOM allant vraisemblablement de pair avec le développement du langage. Le deuxième objectif étant d'établir des valeurs normatives pour l'échelle EASE; 327 enfants normaux de différentes tranches d'âge ont été testés. Les résultats montrent un effet significatif de l'âge dans le développement de la mentalisation et les résultats confirment que cette capacité s'acquiert entre 3 et 5 ans. Des valeurs normatives ont ainsi pu être établies. A l'issue de ce travail, on pourrait proposer l'échelle EASE comme un outil d'aide au diagnostic, en particulier pour le diagnostic différentiel des pathologies induisant des troubles du langage et de la personnalité chez le jeune enfant que sont les TEO (autisme atypique notamment) et les TSOL, qui composent le continuum autistique. Ce diagnostic différentiel est souvent très délicat à poser. Il est pourtant crucial, car la conduite à tenir et le pronostic sont différents. Il serait intéressant de pouvoir disposer en clinique d'outils permettant d'avancer l'âge du diagnostic. L'échelle EASE présente donc tout son intérêt.
