Book excerpt: The Signifying Self: Cervantine Drama as Counter-Perspective Aesthetic offers a comprehensive analysis of all eight of Cervantes's Ocho comedias (published 1615), moving beyond conventional anti-Lope approaches to Cervantine dramatic practise in order to identify what, indeed, his theatre promotes. Considered on its own aesthetic terms, but also taking into account ontological and socio-cultural concerns, this study compels a re-assessment of Cervantes's drama and conflates any monolithic interpretations which do not allow for the textual interplay of contradictory and conflicting discourses which inform it. Cervantes's complex and polyvalent representation of freedom underpins such an approach; a concept which is considered to be a leitmotif of Cervantes's work but which has received scant attention with regards to his theatre. Investigation of this topic reveals not only Cervantes's rejection of established theatrical convention, but his preoccupation with the difficult relationship between the individual and the early modern Spanish world. Cervantes's comedias emerge as a counter-perspective to dominant contemporary Spanish ideologies and more orthodox artistic imaginings. Ultimately, The Signifying Self seeks to recuperate the Ocho comedias as a significant part of the Cervantine, and Golden-Age, canon and will be of interest and benefit to those scholars who work on Cervantes and indeed on early modern Spanish theatre in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the limits of the novel? What is the relationship between a work of fiction and reality? How does the writer engage the reader's commitment, and how do successive generations of readers affect the work of art? These are some of the questions that Professor Grossvogel seeks to answer in his wide-ranging new study of the novel. After a chapter on the relation between the novel and its reader, he explores in detail the significant efforts of increasingly sophisticated authors to respond to increasingly sophisticated readers from the Middle Ages to the present. Variously experimental works such as Troilus and Criseyde, Don Quixote, La Princesse de Clevès, Tristram Shandy, The Trial, Remembrance of Things Past, and Nausea give lively evidence for his thesis. There is also a comparative study of Joyce and Robbe-Grillet, as well as the concluding chapter "The Novel as Ritual," based on Robinson Crusoe and The Idiot. In developing a new methodology for analyzing fiction, Professor Grossvogel clarifies and characterizes the most recent experiments in novelistic technique, and places them in perspective by comparing them to earlier ones. His conclusions about the nature of the novel, about the continuing interaction between author and reader, and about the evolutions of the novel as a form are an original contribution to modern critical theory. One of the first works in English to make extensive use of the methods of postwar European philosophical criticism, the book will stimulate controversy and make fascinating reading for anyone concerned with the history—and future—of the novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mythological, folkloric, and religious beliefs of Western culture have resulted in a long and ongoing history of esoteric themes in theatre from the Middle Ages to the present in Spain and the America. Now Robert Lima, a noted comparatist, brings to bear on this material his wide knowledge of the world of the occult. Lima defines the terms "occult" and "occultism" broadly to embrace the many ways in which humans have sought to fathom a secret knowledge held to be accessible only through such supernatural agencies as alchemy, angelology, asceticism, astrology, demonolatry, divination, ecstasy, magic, necromancy, possession, Santeria, séances, voudoun, and witchcraft. The dramatic works covered range from medieval materializations of Hell to the Golden Age plays of Lope de vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderón de la Barca, to modern stage works by Valle-Inclán, García Lorca, Casona, Miras, and a number of significant Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean dramatists. The concluding comprehensive bibliography of the drama of the occult is invaluable.

Book excerpt: “The evil that men do” has been chronicled for thousands of years on the European stage, and perhaps nowhere else is human fear of our own evil more detailed than in its personifications in theater. In Stages of Evil, Robert Lima explores the sociohistorical implications of Christian and pagan representations of evil and the theatrical creativity that occultism has engendered. By examining examples of alchemy, astronomy, demonology, exorcism, fairies, vampires, witchcraft, hauntings, and voodoo in prominent plays, Stages of Evil explores American and European perceptions of occultism from medieval times to the modern age.
