In every field of human endeavor, the windstorms of change are fast altering the ways we live. Contemporary man is no longer anchored in certainties and thus has lost sight of who he is, where he comes from and where he is going. If there is a single book that can shed light amid the postmodern darkness, this is it.

Book excerpt: On April 2, 2005, the world kept vigil at the bedside of John Paul II and together mourned his passing.A man of suffering--the child who lost his parents; the youth who endured war, Nazi persecution, and the subsequent communist regime; the youthful Pope who was shot in an attempt on his life; the elderly Pope whose Parkinson's prompted numerous trips to Gemelli hospital--Wojtyla was always constantly attentive to the sick and suffering, who knew they would find a place of listening and understanding in his heart.Acquainted with sorrow throughout his life, John Paul II demonstrated the value of redemptive suffering to a world keeping vigil during his final hours. Now, his private secretary and personal physician, and others nearest him during his last days, share their own memories of that precious time: a story of courage, gratitude and love.Stanislaw Dziwisz is today the archbishop of Krakow, after having dedicated the past 27 years to John Paul II as his secretary. Czeslaw Drazek, SJ, is the publisher of the Polish edition of L?Osservatore Romano.Renato Buzzonetti was John Paul II's personal physician.Angelo Comastri is the President of the Fabbrica di San Peitro and was the Vicar General of Vatican City under John Paul II. Book Synopsis Where are the Helpers? by : Paul Josef Cordes
Download or read book Where are the Helpers? written by Paul Josef Cordes and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 25, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI published Deus caritas est ("God Is Love"), the first encyclical of his papacy. In Part I, Benedict XVI analyzes human and divine love in terms of eros and agape; presenting love as a fundamental force, Benedict argues that in the Christian, biblical understanding, love is a single reality with many dimensions. He declares to the world that "the love which God lavishes upon us and which we in turn must share with others" also carries cultural, political, and legal implications, arising from the fact that "love of God and love of neighbor" are "inseparable" and form a single commandment. Caritas, the "practice" of love of neighbor, is the theme of the second part of the encyclical. As Cardinal Cordes explains, "the encyclical represents the Magna carta of our work: to orient and to inspire the charitable work of the Catholic Church." In this volume, Cardinal Cordes offers his own studies and other reflections that investigate the meaning of Christian help, comment on the theological, spiritual, and canonical guidelines of Deus caritas est, and illustrate concrete ways to help the needy and, in doing so, experience the goodness of God.

Book Synopsis Benedict XVI's Reform by : Nicola Bux
Download or read book Benedict XVI's Reform written by Nicola Bux and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Benedict XVI reestablished the celebration of the older Latin Mass, voices of protest rose up from many sides. This book explains the motives behind the Pope's decision to allow two forms of the Mass by turning to the Pope's own theological and liturgical writings and also draws on the author's experiences on various Church commissions and in offices of the Roman Curia. The author also brings to his subject an astute understanding of current social and spiritual trends both inside and outside the Church. Sensitive to modern man's hunger for the sacred, he desires with Pope Benedict XVI that the Mass be first and foremost a place of encounter with the living God. --Publisher.

Book Synopsis The Children of God by : J. Gordon Melton
Download or read book The Children of God written by J. Gordon Melton and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Children of God emerged out of the hippie movement of the 1960s, and through the 1980s they came to blend Christianity with sexual freedom, communal living, and a rejection of materialism and "the system." The Children, or "the Family" as they are now called, modified their behavior in the 1990s in the wake of several child sexual abuse charges (all dismissed) and the need for direction among the rising generation of Family members. They continue to live communally, proselytize full-time (none hold traditional jobs) and engage in sexual "sharing." As a byproduct of their evangelism, they have produced a number of accomplished musicians. They receive guidance for their daily lives through periodic revelations passed to them by the Family's current leader, Maria (the founder's widow), and her associates. Despite their variance from traditional Christian beliefs and practices, their recent attempts to conform to some degree with cultural norms in whatever country they work has tempered criticism, and they continue as the most successful communal movement of an almost forgotten hippie world.
