Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and illuminating critical examination of international relations in Europe. This new volume presents all of the state of the art thinking, focusing particularly on international relations theory and theoretical debates in Western and Central European countries. The contributors seek to strengthen knowledge about different ways of cultivating the discipline; to intensify pan-European communication concerning IR theory; to contribute to improving the quality of theorizing; and finally to consider future directions for the discipline in Europe. The main issues addressed include: the historical development of the discipline; factors driving IR theorizing; the institutional and cultural context of theorizing; 'homegrown' theory-building vs. theory import; patterns of traditional and new discourse; and the diversity of disciplinary traditions.

Book Synopsis The Eastern Enlargement of the European Union by : Anselm Skuhra
Download or read book The Eastern Enlargement of the European Union written by Anselm Skuhra and published by Studien Verlag, Austria. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eastern enlargement of the European Union is one of the most significant developments in the history of European integration since the end of World War II. This is due to the large number of accession countries and the variety of cultures and structures and the challenges presented by their systems' transformations. The essays in this collection, planned on the occasion of a symposium on Central and Eastern Europe held at the University of Salzburg, focus on a variety of countries, offer a variety of perspectives, and invite comparisons. This volume includes eleven contributions from fourteen scholars that raise key questions regarding the role of institutions, actor constellations, interests and rational choice, the importance of commonalities, identities or perceptions of welfare, and the influence of basic values and basic norms. Theoretical approaches employed are interest analysis and bargaining concepts, policy analysis, and constructivism. In some contributions, the authors reflect not only on the challenges and intricacies of the negotiations and the transformations, but also on the national interests and protectionist stances of some of the neighboring EU member states - which appear rather atavistic in the light of the declared EU tenets. Contributors also investigate the importance of political versus economic factors and the different motivations of the candidate basic data on each former eastern bloc country, the results of the voting of the European Parliament and of the referenda on EU membership in the accession countries, as well as a geographical map.

Book Synopsis The Reuniting of Europe by : José I. Torreblanca
Download or read book The Reuniting of Europe written by José I. Torreblanca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: In 1989, central and Eastern European countries broke free form the Soviet Union and looked upon the European Community to support their 'return to Europe'. Some years later, leaders of the European Community, meeting in Copenhagen in June 1993, endorsed for the first time the membership aspirations of the recently democratized countries of Central and Eastern Europe. This insightful text examines the negotiations, debates, tensions and contradictions behind the process of approximation between the two halves of Europe, both within the EC itself as well as between the EC and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The extensive consultation of unpublished internal documents, and a theoretically relevant and well-written analysis, ensures that this book is an indispensable resource for students and researchers of EC/EU relations with Central and Eastern Europe.

Download or read book Spain written by Richard Gillespie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume assesses the evolution of Spain's external relations during the 1990s, within and beyond Europe, and assesses the principal challenges facing the country at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The coincidence of several crucial global and European developments has had a profound effect on Spain. Adjustment of the economy and changes in foreign policy perspectives have become unavoidable. In turn, Spain, as an increasingly self-confident member of the EU, has itself become a significant actor in European-level developments. Spain's relationship with Europe and the wider world is increasingly balanced between new constraints and new opportunities for international influence.
