Book excerpt: Les Actes de Thomas (= AcTh), corpus transmis principalement en syriaque et en grec, appartiennent à la littérature apocryphe se rapportant à l'action de l'apôtre Thomas en Inde. Ils comportent cinq Récits témoignant des gestes et des prières liturgiques du "devenir chrétien". Cette thèse est une recherche historique, liturgique et théologique sur les données textuelles de ces Récits, que nous possédons aujourd'hui dans la version syriaque éditée par W. Wright et dans la version grecque éditée par M. Bonnet. Après avoir situé l'initiation chrétienne dans le contexte historique de l'Église ancienne (Ière partie), ce travail analyse les données liturgiques et théologiques des cinq Récits (IIe partie). L'étude elle-même (IIIe partie) montre la spécificité de la pratique liturgique et la compréhension théologique du rite d'initiation chrétienne selon les AcTh : les candidats demandent le "rušmā" / " sphragis" et l'apôtre leur donne l'"Onction-Baptême-Eucharistie" en une seule célébration liturgique. L'un des résultats de cette recherche consiste à montrer que l'Esprit Saint, invoqué dans deux des épiclèses des AcTh, est un ajout ultérieur aux textes primitifs, à la suite des discussions trinitaires et pneumatologiques des IIIe-IVe siècles. Le passage de la perspective christologique qui règne dans l'ensemble du corpus à une conception neumatologique exprimée dans les textes liturgiques indique comment les AcTh ont pu évoluer en fonction des développements théologiques survenus dans l'Église ancienne.

This is seen in political terms, as in the writings of Justin Martyr, as well as spiritual ones. Charles Munier singles out Tertullian as the first to formulate a doctrine of apostolic succession, but also traces his subsequent path towards the affirmation of the authority of the Holy Spirit over that embodied in the ’Orthodox Church’. The following studies turn to a complementary area of ecclesiology, that of pastoral care. The author points to the great diversity of forms of worship and rite, from the earliest days of the Church; these, he argues, reflect a constant process of adaptation, to fit particular religious needs, and to understand such divergences it is necessary to investigate the theological motives that lay behind them. Particular topics here are those of baptism and marriage, especially the still controversial question of how and with what discretion to treat divorce and remarriage.
