Une enquête ethnographique réalisée sur deux sites, une plateforme scientifique mutualisée (d'IRM fonctionnelle) et un organisme de recherche en neurosciences, nous a permis de suivre toutes les étapes du processus de la recherche (de la conception du protocole expérimental à la publication des résultats) et d'appréhender la façon dont les images sont engagées dans la production du savoir sur le cerveau. L'étude de la morphologie du cerveau, qui mobilise de plus en plus les bases de données et des logiciels conçus pour le traitement d'un grand nombre d'images, pose des nouvelles contraintes propres à une science de plus en plus data-driven. Souvent le travail scientifique témoigne de pratiques de traitement des données que nous avons expliquées avec la notion de bricolage. Ce phénomène répond à des impératifs de productivité mais reflète aussi une tension entre deux cadres normatifs : la méthode expérimentale et l'exploration de Big Data. Une partie de notre recherche est consacrée aux neurosciences sociales, branche d'appartenance de certains informateurs que nous avons suivis, et à la localisation des régions qui composeraient les régions du cerveau dit « social » (Dunbar, 1998). Pour nous, l'ancrage biologique de certaines dispositions mentales assuré par les données issues de la neuro-imagerie fonctionnelle, fournit une légitimation de l'ordre social existant. Les émotions « morales » notamment fonctionnent en tant que bio-marqueurs dans le clivage entre « normal » et « pathologique » mais elles participent aussi à la construction du cerveau « sexué ».
