Book Synopsis Legal Pluralism in Action by : Dr Latif Tas
Download or read book Legal Pluralism in Action written by Dr Latif Tas and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book contributes to, and refocuses, public debates about the incorporation of plural approaches into the English legal system. The book specifically advances the recent, largely theoretical, discussions of Sharia legal practice by examining a secular method of dispute resolution as practised by the Kurdish Peace Committee in London. Following migration to the West, many Kurds still adhere to traditional values and norms. Building on these, they have adapted their customary legal practices to create unofficial legal courts and other forms of legal hybridisation. These practical solutions to the challenges of a pluralistic life are seen by Kurdish communities in the UK as applicable not only to British and transnational daily life, but also as a training ground for institutions in a possible future Kurdish state. The study provides a substantive evidence base using extensive ethnographic data about the workings of the Kurdish Peace Committee, examining detailed case studies in the context of the customs and practices of the Kurdish community. Based on an ethnographic and interdisciplinary approach, this book will be of interest to policy makers, socio-legal professionals, students and scholars of legal anthropology, ethnic minority law, transnationalism, diaspora, Kurdish, Turkish and Middle Eastern studies.

Book Synopsis Turkey's Kurdish Question by : Henri J. Barkey
Download or read book Turkey's Kurdish Question written by Henri J. Barkey and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kurds, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Middle East, are reasserting their identity—politically and through violence. Divided mainly among Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, the Kurds have posed increasingly sharp challenges to all of these states in their quest for greater autonomy if not outright independence. Turkey's essentially democratic structure and civil society_ideal tools for coping with and incorporating minority challenge_have so far been suspended on this issue, which the government is treating almost exclusively as a security problem to be dealt with by force. For the West the situation in Turkey is particularly significant because of the country's importance in the region and because of the economic, political, and diplomatic damage that the conflict has caused. If Turkey fails to find a peaceful solution within its current borders, then the outlook is grim for ethnic and separatist challenges elsewhere in the region. This study explores the roots, dimensions, character, and evolution of the problem, offers a range of approaches to a resolution of the conflict, and draws broader parallels between the Kurdish question and other separatist movements worldwide.

Book Synopsis A Genocide in the Making? by : Bulent Kenes
Download or read book A Genocide in the Making? written by Bulent Kenes and published by Blue Dome Press. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Turkish government under the Erdoğan regime is undertaking a brutal crackdown against the participants of a civic group, namely the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet (service) movement, with the deliberate intention of destroying this social group, in whole or in part. In this extensive research, Dr. Keneş argues that this crackdown is filled with violations that may be classified at the very least as crimes against humanity and could very well be the harbinger of what comes next in terms of a full-scale genocide to exterminate thousands of innocent people. Keneş exemplifies many of these crimes and scales them against the genocide criteria according to definitions and norms accepted by United Nations and field experts. Given that the international community has historically downplayed the early signs of genocidal acts and thus failed to prevent such crimes many times before, it is necessary to be on the alert before the Erdoğan regime goes that far. A Genocide in the Making? is a unique volume that loudly cries out to the world this highly probable risk before it is too late.
Download or read book Karaova written by Çağlar Çetok and published by Destek Publishing and Media Group. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Sonunda kendini bile isteye Fizan’a bile sürdürür. Amacı, kendi itibarını yerle bir ederek peşinden sürüklenip gelen halkı kendinden uzaklaştırmaktır. Kerimoğlu Ali’nin insani zaafları yüzünden yaptığı hatalarla bambaşka bir seyir kazanan hayatı bilinmeze doğru sürüklenirken, sevdiği kadının katili olarak tutuklanan torunu Memed’in acıklı hikâyesi de romanın paralel kurgusunda akar. Çağlar Çetok’un tarihin unutulmaz iki efesinin gerçek hayat hikâyelerinden kurgulayarak kaleme aldığı Karaova hem bir dönemin siyasi ve toplumsal panoramasını gözler önüne seriyor hem de derinlikli psikolojik tahlilleriyle iki efenin mücadelesi üzerinden iyilikle kötülük meselesini tarafsızca sorguluyor.

Book Synopsis The Kurds and the Politics of Turkey by : Deniz Çifçi
Download or read book The Kurds and the Politics of Turkey written by Deniz Çifçi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kurds constitute the largest stateless nation in the world. Their position in Turkey attracts attention both within the country and internationally, particularly focusing on the demand for Kurdish independence. Yet since the 1990s, new Kurdish parties have formed within Turkey who have a variety of ideologies and demands that go beyond, and differ in opinion on, the question of independence. Much of the present literature on the topic looks at the Kurds of Turkey as a homogenous group with unified political demands, which over-simplifies their position within the political backdrop of Turkey. This book seeks to provide nuance and depth to the current debate on Kurdish political agency and presence in Turkey. Presently, the Kurds' political demands can be classified into four categories; democratic autonomy, their cultural rights to be granted, federalism (territorial autonomies) and independence (creation of a Kurdish nation-state). In a broad sense, these models can also be ordered into two categories; territorial political models (federalism and independence) and non-territorial political models (democratic autonomy and cultural rights). Considering the diversity within the Kurdish community - intertwinement of tribal, ethnic and national identity - and differences in their language, religion and ideology, there are several contributing factors for the emergence of the current varied political demands of Kurds. By explaining variation among the Kurds' political demands through close analysis of existing at emerging parties, this study challenges a deterministic approach to the Kurds which currently dominates the discourse.

Book Synopsis Multiculturalism in Turkey by : Durukan Kuzu
Download or read book Multiculturalism in Turkey written by Durukan Kuzu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past couple of decades, there have been many efforts to seek a solution to the often violent situation in which Kurdish citizens of Turkey find themselves. These efforts have included a gradual programme of political recognition and multiculturalism. Here, Durukan Kuzu examines the case of Kurdish citizens in Turkey through the lens of the global debate on multiculturalism, exploring the limitations of these policies. He thereby challenges the conventional thinking about national minorities and their autonomy, and offers a scientifically grounded comparative framework for the study of multiculturalism. Through comparison of the situation of Kurds in Turkey with that of other national minorities - such as the Flemish in Belgium, Québécois in Canada, Corsicans in France, and Muslims in Greece - the reader is invited to question in what forms multiculturalism can work for different national minorities. A bottom-up approach is used to offer a fresh insight into the Kurdish community and to highlight conflicting views about which form the politics of recognition could take.
Book Synopsis Islamism, Democracy and Liberalism in Turkey by : William Hale
Download or read book Islamism, Democracy and Liberalism in Turkey written by William Hale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Justice and Development Party (AKP) were elected to power in 2002 and since then Turkish politics has undergone considerable change. This book is a comprehensive analysis of the AKP, in terms not just of its ideological agenda, but also of its social basis and performance in office in the main theatres of public policy – political reform, and cultural, economic and foreign policies. Based on an extensive analysis of official and party documents, interviews, academic sources and media coverage, the book outlines the main features of the current global debate on the relationship between Islam, Islamism and democracy. While most top AKP leaders come from an Islamist background, the party has behaved as a moderate, centre-right, conservative democratic party who are fully committed to democracy, a free market economy and Turkey’s EU membership. The book explores and analyses these changes in Turkish politics, and provides coverage of the workings of the contemporary Turkish political systems, policy and ideological issues that go to the heart of Turkish identity. Filling a gap in the existing Turkish and English literature on the subject, this book will be an important contribution to Political Science, particularly the areas of Turkish politics, Middle Eastern studies, Islamic studies and comparative politics.
