Book Synopsis Representing the Exotic and the Familiar by : Meenakshi Bharat
Download or read book Representing the Exotic and the Familiar written by Meenakshi Bharat and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multicultural world of today is often said to be marked by a certain kind of exoticization: a “fetishizing process”, as Graham Huggan has called it, which separates a “first world” from a “third world”, the Occident from the Orient. The essays collected here re-assess this tendency, not least by focusing on the kinds of intellectual tourism and dilettantism to which it has given rise. The wider context of these analyses is a postcolonial scenario where literatures and languages can move from the “exotic” to the comparatively “familiar” space of contemporary writings; where an exotic mythos can live on into the familiar present; and where certain perceptions and representations of peoples, of literatures, and of languages have turned exoticization and familiarization into global modes of mass-cultural consumption. Especially by exploring the liminalities between different cultures, this collection manages to trace both the history and the politics of exoticist representation and, in so doing, to make a significant critical intervention.

Book Synopsis Tamil Oratory and the Dravidian Aesthetic by : Bernard Bate
Download or read book Tamil Oratory and the Dravidian Aesthetic written by Bernard Bate and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-05 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the newness of old things. It concerns an oratorical revolution, a transformation of oratorical style linked to larger transformations in society at large. It explores the aesthetics of Tamil oratory and its vital relationship to one of the key institutions of modern society: democracy. Therefore this book also bears on the centrality of language to the modern human condition. Though Tamil oratory is a relatively new practice in south India, the Dravidian (or Tamil nationalist) style employs archaic forms of Tamil that suggest an ancient mode of speech. Beginning with the advent of mass democratic politics in the 1940s, a new generation of politician adopted this style, known as "fine," or "beautiful Tamil" ( centamil), for its distinct literary virtuosity, poesy, and alluring evocation of a pure Tamil past. Bernard Bate explores the centamil phenomenon, arguing that the genre's spectacular literacy and use of ceremonial procession, urban political ritual, and posters, praise poetry are critical components in the production of a singularly Tamil mode of political modernity: a Dravidian neoclassicism. From his perspective, the centamil revolution and Dravidian neoclassicism suggest that modernity is not the mere successor of tradition but the production of tradition, and that this production is a primary modality of modernity, a new newness-albeit a newness of old things.

This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life's going to be easy...said no one ever. Especially for a PlayStation-loving twelve-year-old in a futuristic city. Being twelve matters. Because that's when I am packed off by the Council on a hardcore, muscle-numbing strugglethon across the five Thinais - the treacherous hills, fatiguing fields, muddy mangroves, dry desert lands and dense forests - to come out shining...or whining. The latter is more my style. It's me against Nature. Me versus wild animals. Me against who-knows-what-lurks. Me versus Me. Get the picture? How this will help me grow up and glow up all in one go, I don't know. But I'm about to find out. So are you!

Book Synopsis The Romance of Indian Coffee by : P. T. Bopanna
Download or read book The Romance of Indian Coffee written by P. T. Bopanna and published by Rolling Stone Publications. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Coorg is the biggest grower of coffee in India, I zeroed in on the subject of coffee. During my youth in Coorg, I was fascinated by the legend of Mr Ivor Bull, a pioneer planter and the founder of the Consolidated Coffee Estates Ltd., Pollibetta. Though Mr Bull had returned to England in 1954, he had become part of the local ‘coffee folklore’ and was remembered with affection by the local planters. Rightly so, because it was Mr Bull who had encouraged the Coorg planters to grow oranges, cardamom and pepper along with coffee. The inter-planting vastly improved the economic condition of the small planters. I did not want to focus my writing on the cultivation of coffee because coffee has been grown in India as a commercial crop for nearly two centuries and planters are familiar with it. In this book, I have tried to give the reader, the coffee grower and the coffee lover in particular, an insight into the romance of coffee – it’s fascinating history, many charming facets of coffee culture, its symbiosis with nature and what makes it such a captivating brew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an ocean where myriads of rivers converge, can one sole river lend the ocean its distinct flavour? For someone who is at home with several languages, literary traditions and disciplines, is it possible for one form to criss-cross the landscape of another? In a poet’s world of mirrors, where stream and earth are sky, one may ‘sometimes count every orange on a tree’, but can one count ‘all the trees in a single orange’? In this volume, Guillermo Rodríguez explores these possibilities by analysing the works of one of India’s finest poets, translators, essayists and scholars of the twentieth century, A.K. Ramanujan (1929–1993).
