Book excerpt: This study is divided into three chapters. Chapter one deals with the Kurds and their country Kurdistan. It covers a short account on the geography of the area, the population of the people, situation of the Kurds in the countries where they live, their origin and their language and literature. In chapter two the following two points are discussed: 1.The appearance of the first Kurdish newspaper. 2.A general survey of the previous works on the Kurdish newspapers and periodicals. Chapter three covers in chronological order, the Kurdish newspapers and other periodical publications from 22nd April 1898, the date of the first Kurdish newspaper KURDISTAN until 14th July 1958. Each entry where possible, is given a full bibliographical description, followed by the locations of the surviving issues in all libraries in Kurdistan and abroad. There follows a detailed discussion on the political and historical circumstances, the editor(s), owner, manager(s), contributors, contents, frequency, number of issues published, the income and financial position and the printing press(es)used. This chapter also reveals the following facts: 1.Most of these publications had short lives. 2.All these publications were subsidised by their owners and editors. 3.During this period (1898 1958) there were no daily Kurdish newspapers. 4.Their contents were mostly political and literary.

KRI is approached as a case study, as an example of the struggle between authoritarian and democratization efforts at the same time. The book contributes towards understanding the dynamics of the media systems in the KRI and attempts to participate in the theoretical discussion of media and politics in this region. The research outcomes show which parts of the press, how many of them and for what length of time the press in the KRI has been owned/controlled by political parties. This book also studies the system of political parties and particularly as related to the press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping account of an award-winning journalist’s journey into the heart of rebel territory during the First Iraqi-Kurdish War. On July 4, 1962, New York Times foreign correspondent Dana Adams Schmidt left his post in Beirut to be voluntarily smuggled into Iraqi Kurdistan. It was the beginning of a nearly two-month journey that would climax in a days-long visit with the leader of the Kurdish rebellion, the most loved and feared man in Kurdistan, Mullah Mustafa Barzani. Accompanied by armed Kurdish guides and a 72-year-old Turkish interpreter, the six-feet-three-inch, seersucker-suit-clad Schmidt traveled, often at night, a secret route by foot, mule, horse and, on two occasions, jeep into the high Kurdish mountains to report on “the fightingest people in the Middle East” as no foreign journalist had done before. The physical dangers were acute—his group was strafed more than once by the Iraqi air force. Along the way, Schmidt learned about the history and culture of the Kurds, whose cause Barzani hoped Schmidt could convey to the world. Originally published in 1964 and now back in print with a new foreword by historian Charles Glass, Journey Among Brave Men is an enduring testament to the power of audacious journalism and to the strong will of the Kurds, an embattled people who remain in search of an independent state today. “One can only marvel at the author’s indefatigable industry and power of enthusiasm, which makes him one of the most reliable of all daily paper reporters . . . An excellent, fair and patently honest piece of work.”—The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The once nomadic Kurdish populace has, for years, remained isolated from the outside world. Only recently has communication between the Kurds and other nationalities begun to flourish. The interest in knowing more about the Kurds, who are playing now a vital rule in Middle Eastern politics, has increased in the last few years. Also, the discovery of large amounts of oil in the province of Dohuk, encouraged a number of companies to invest and set up projects in the area. The Kurdish Phrasebook would be an essential tool for people visiting the Kurdish region in Iraq or neighboring countries, to communicate with Kurds. This handbook provides the measures to learn and communicate in Kurmanji-Kurdish, which is regarded by many linguists as the dialect spoken by the majority of Kurds. The book is designed to cover the day-to-day conversations of the spoken language and to give the key words and phrases needed to interact with native speakers.

Book excerpt: Unlike other publications since the downfall of Saddam's regime, Iraq: Then & Now traces the history of the country from ancient times until the present. Supplementary boxes, many written by Iraqis themselves, reflect on life today as compared with life in Saddam's Iraq and even earlier, describing their experiences, hopes, fears, ambitions and visions for the future. The book self-consciously avoids making any judgement on the political debate surrounding the 2003 war and subsequent occupation; instead it presents the varying views, and offers a rounded, balanced picture.Published to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the change, this guide to the country and its people, provides information on Iraq's culture and archaeology, the south, Baghdad and the Sunni Triangle. The northern region of Iraqi Kurdistan stands apart as a success story and the travel appendix provides essential information for the increasing numbers of visitors to this region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume painstakingly formulates a composite model of translation procedures that covers both linguistic and cultural aspects inherent in translation. The model is based on an integration of three classic taxonomies of translation procedures proposed by influential translation scholars, namely Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), Newmark (1988), and Dickins, Hervey and Higgins (2002/2016). The book combines these three taxonomies into an integrated model and extends it, effectively, to identify patterns of translation procedures and overall strategies in English-Kurdish translation of journalistic texts. The book is a breakthrough in the field of journalistic translation between the two languages. With a clear definition and exemplification of each translation procedure, the importance of the model is that it is replicable for future descriptive translation studies and can be carried out in other language pairs and on other genres. Moreover, the model is comprehensive in nature, and covers almost all translational changes and shifts that may occur in the translation process. Thus, this model of translation procedures transcends previous frameworks in such a way that prospective translation researchers will not need to go back to these older models of translation procedures.
