Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest gifts that a teenager may receive, is a real understanding of basic arithmetic [addition, subtraction, multiplication and division] when a child.Pupils need to develop their ability to solve a wide range of problems, including increasingly complex properties of numbers and arithmetic, and problems demanding efficient written and mental methods of calculation - by the end of year 6, pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages.Practice, practice and even more practice helps to build fluency, thereby providing young people with the confidence and pleasure associated in demonstrating an ability to complete questions both quickly and accurately.Providing hundreds of practice questions, this is a "no frills, no nonsense" workbook that I trust students, parents, guardians, tutors and teachers will find helpful in developing various levels of mental agility associated with the basic operation of columnar subtraction. The curriculum requires pupils to practice:-* using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction with increasingly large numbers to aid fluency; and* mental calculations with increasingly large numbers to aid fluency, for example:12,462 - 2,300 = 10,162. Developing mental agility is the key - albeit that the workbook is neither age nor grade specific, it provides opportunities for:-* accelerated learners to expand their skills;* after school consolidation of "current" learning; and* tutoring/revision purposes. In addition to basic terminology and number charts being provided for ease of reference/familiarity/repetition purposes, there is a total of 100 exercises [each with 20 questions] to progress to completion - answers are provided.Exercises should be undertaken both regularly and frequently, preferably daily (the discipline of 15 to 20 minutes every day, including holidays, really does make a difference), and to both build confidence and maximise accuracy it is essential that:-* the numbers to be added are written in neat columns; and* individuals should work at their own pace, checking their answers before moving on - to reinforce learning, students should repeat earlier exercises as appropriate.

Book excerpt: This book is an amazing resource for teachers who are struggling to help students develop both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.. --Dr. Margaret (Peg) Smith, co-author of5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions Robert Kaplinsky, the co-creator of Open Middle math problems, brings hisnew class of tasks designed to stimulate deeper thinking and lively discussion among middle and high school students in Open Middle Math: Problems That Unlock Student Thinking, Grades 6-12. The problems are characterized by a closed beginning,- meaning all students start with the same initial problem, and a closed end,- meaning there is only one correct or optimal answer. The key is that the middle is open- in the sense that there are multiple ways to approach and ultimately solve the problem. These tasks have proven enormously popular with teachers looking to assess and deepen student understanding, build student stamina, and energize their classrooms. Professional Learning Resource for Teachers: Open Middle Math is an indispensable resource for educators interested in teaching student-centered mathematics in middle and high schools consistent with the national and state standards. Sample Problems at Each Grade: The book demonstrates the Open Middle concept with sample problems ranging from dividing fractions at 6th grade to algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Teaching Tips for Student-Centered Math Classrooms: Kaplinsky shares guidance on choosing problems, designing your own math problems, and teaching for multiple purposes, including formative assessment, identifying misconceptions, procedural fluency, and conceptual understanding. Adaptable and Accessible Math: The tasks can be solved using various strategies at different levels of sophistication, which means all students can access the problems and participate in the conversation. Open Middle Math will help math teachers transform the 6th -12th grade classroom into an environment focused on problem solving, student dialogue, and critical thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the importance of mathematics in our educational systems little is known about how abstract mathematical thinking emerges. Under the uniting thread of mathematical development, we hope to connect researchers from various backgrounds to provide an integrated view of abstract mathematical cognition. Much progress has been made in the last 20 years on how numeracy is acquired. Experimental psychology has brought to light the fact that numerical cognition stems from spatial cognition. The findings from neuroimaging and single cell recording experiments converge to show that numerical representations take place in the intraparietal sulcus. Further research has demonstrated that supplementary neural networks might be recruited to carry out subtasks; for example, the retrieval of arithmetic facts is done by the angular gyrus. Now that the neural networks in charge of basic mathematical cognition are identified, we can move onto the stage where we seek to understand how these basics skills are used to support the acquisition and use of abstract mathematical concepts.
