Book excerpt: Alexandrite, a variety of chrysoberyl, and one of the finest colour-change natural gemstones, may almost be called "the national gemstone of Russia". This great prestige is based on two facts: its noble name in honour of the Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich (the future Tsar Alexander II) and its dazzling colours, green in daylight and red in incandescent light, the military colours of Imperial Russia. Although quantities of facetable quality alexandrite are considerably less than those of emerald, alexandrite is counted among and compared to the "big four" of the gem business: diamond - ruby - sapphire - emerald. In this book the authors present an historical overview of emerald mining in the Urals, the discovery of Russian alexandrites in the Uralian emerald mines, the naming and historical use of alexandrites and their appearance and display in mineralogical museums and the gem trade. Morphology and twinning of rough alexandrite is described for single crystals, single contact twins and cyclic twins (trillings). Mineralogical and gemmological properties are thoroughly explained and numerous photo-micrographs of inclusions and growth patterns in faceted samples are presented. Chatoyancy and asterism of alexandrite and chrysoberyl from Russia and Sri Lanka are also described. A further chapter deals with characteristic growth patterns of Russian, other natural and synthetic alexandrites. Colorimetric data of Russian alexandrites and green chrysoberyls are explained using the CIELAB colour space, and the distinction between these varieties is explained. A chapter on trace element chemistry and locality determination rounds off the book. An extensive appendix containing lists of historical names, a time table and numerous references provides valuable information on Russian alexandrites for all researchers in the mineralogical and gemmological fields as well as for gemmological laboratories, jewellers and gem dealers. Consequently, this book, illustrated with more than 200 colour figures and photographs, addresses mineralogists, gemmologists, historians, mineral and gem collectors as well as all members of the gem trade.

Book excerpt: 'GIS for Earth Surface Systems' illustrates the application of GIS techniques in solving problems of physical geography. The editors found it important to have the book cover the entire process of data transformation and analysis: theory, methods used, data collection techniques, culminating in the selection the best suited GIS technique for the specific purpose, rather than limiting themselves to a discussion of only GIS technologies. Contributions to this volume discuss the application of GIS-techniques to reach specific research objectives (e.g. snowmelt and precipitation modelling, denudation rates, extraction of morphometric parameters). The papers also highlight present limitations of the GIS-techniques and point out future directions of GIS development and use in physical geography. The research projects described in this volume were carried out under the aegis of the GIS working group of the Association of German Geographers (Arbeitskreis GIS der DGfG), established to investigate present and future uses and developments of GIS in physical geography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handy atlas presents detailed analyses of mean annual, semi-annual, seasonal and monthly values of the following fluxes and parameters derived from the long term monthly averages of routine meteorological data: net all-wave radiation, net long-wave radiation, actual evapotranspiration, the flux of sensible heat, the parameterized surface albedo, total cloudiness, the modified Bowen-ratio (the ratio of the heat needed for actual evotranspiration to the total energy available), the radiational index of dryness (Budykoratio) and total runoff. In 26 maps, the months - i. e. their regional variability - are shown in which net radiation, actual evotranspiration, the flux of sensible heat and the modified Bowen-ratio are at their maximum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The onshore geology can provide direct access to critical rock formations and structures and is therefore able to add detail, support or modification to the story of the formation of the oceanic basins in the Arctic and North Atlantic, a story initially derived from offshore geophysical data. The CASE program has since been modified to the study of Circum-Arctic Structural Events, it has continued to the completion of expedition CASE 6 in 2000 and has been extended to include work in North Greenland, Ellesmere Island and Siberia. The general concept of onshore/offshore correlations, however, is unchanged.
