Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the second working conference on Verified Software: Theories, Tools, and Experiments, VSTTE 2008, held in Toronto, Canada, in October 2008. The 16 papers presented together with 4 invited talks were carefully revised and selected for inclusion in the book. This second conference formally inaugurates the Verified Software Initiative (VSI), a fifteen-year, co-operative, international project directed at the scientific challenges of large-scale software verification. The scope of the cooperative effort includes the sharing and interoperability of tools, the alignment of theory and practice, the identification of challenge problems, the construction of benchmark suites, and the execution of large-scale experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Physical Processes in Estuaries the present day knowledge of the physics of transport phenomena in estuaries and their mathematical treatment is summarized: It is divided into following parts: - Water movements in estuaries - Estuarine fronts and river plumes - Internal waves and interface stability - Fine sediment transport, aggregation of particles, settling velocity of mud flocs - Sedimentation and erosion of fine sediments. For each topic an up-to-date review and recommendations for future research are given, followed by results of original studies. Since estuarine environments are the first to be threatened by urbanization and industrial exploitation this book is an important tool for students and researchers of environmental problems as well as for consultants and water authorities.

Book excerpt: From novels and short stories to television and film, popular media has made a cottage industry of predicting the end of the world will be caused by particle accelerators. Rather than allay such fears, public pronouncements by particle scientists themselves often unwittingly fan the flames of hysteria. This book surveys media depictions of particle accelerator physics and the perceived dangers these experiments pose. In addition, it describes the role of scientists in propagating such fears and misconceptions, offering as a conclusion ways in which the scientific community could successfully allay such misplaced fears through more effective communication strategies. The book is aimed at the general reader interested in separating fact from fiction in the field of high-energy physics, at science educators and communicators, and, last but not least, at all scientists concerned about these issues. About the Author Kristine M Larsen holds a Ph.D. in Physics and is currently a professor at Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT, in the Geological Sciences Department. She has published a number of books, among them The Women Who Popularized Geology in the 19th Century (Springer, 2017), The Mythological Dimensions of Neil Gaiman (eds. Anthony Burdge, Jessica Burke, and Kristine Larsen. Kitsune Press, 2012. Recipient of the Gold Medal for Science Fiction/Fantasy in the 2012 Florida Publishing Association Awards), The Mythological Dimensions of Doctor Who (eds. Anthony Burdge, Jessica Burke, and Kristine Larsen. Kitsune Press, 2010), as well as Stephen Hawking: A Biography (Greenwood Press, 2005) and Cosmology 101 (Greenwood Press, (2007).

Book excerpt: With today's problems surrounding shoreline protection, this book should be of great assistance. This manual contains a compilation of 2 Navy and 2 Corps manuals all relative to the subject of coastal protection and the affects tidal action has on our shorelines. The titles included are: Coastal Protection is a U.S. Navy publication which deals specifically with waves and their characteristics. In order to prepare safe designs, the normal and extreme waves which will act against the structure must be evaluated so that a design wave can be selected. Pilebuck takes the user through this phase into the application of data to actual design of breakwaters and seawalls. Storm Surge Analysis: High tides and wind-generated waves combine to provide a potential for abnormally high water levels and flooding during hurricanes or other serious storms. An understanding of this phenomena is essential in order to plan control structures or design others.

Special Reference to Physical Processes in Estuaries is briefly outlined in Chapter I. Here I wish to acknowledge those whose support I consider to be pivotal to this under taking. My deepest appreciation goes to Cynthia Vey, whose organizational skills and dedicated effort made the completion of this volume possible. Thanks are also due to Gail Terry for workshop organization, Jean Branson for word processing and Lillean Pieter for helping with drawings. Finally, I must express my sincere appreciation to Arthur Ezra 9f the National Science Foundation for providing support (through Grant No. CEE-8401185) for the workshop, and to Hsiang Wang for depart mental encouragement. With deepest regret, I must note the untimely death of Ranjan Ariathurai, 39, on June 5, 1985, before this volume could be published. He was a guiding force to many within the small group of researchers in cohesive sediment dynamics, and his professional brilliance and inspirational personal qualities constituted the true spirit . behind the workshop. I trust this volume will serve, albeit in a small way, as a fitting memory to this spirit, and to the remarkable professional contributions Ranjan made during his short career. Professor Ray B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zone where land and sea meet is composed of a variety of complex environments. The coastal areas of the world contain a large percentage of its population and are therefore of extreme economic importance. Industrial, residential, and recreational developments, as well as large urban complexes, occupy much of the coastal margin of most highly developed countries. Undoubtedly future expansion in many undeveloped maritime countries will also be concentrated on coastal areas. Accompanying our occupation of coasts in this age of technology is a dependence on coastal environments for transportation, food, water, defense, and recreation. In order to utilize the coastal zone to its capacity, and yet not plunder its resources, we must have extensive knowledge of the complex environments contained along the coasts. The many environments within the coastal zone include bays, estuaries, deltas, marshes, dunes, and beaches. A tremendously broad range of conditions is represented by these environments. Salinity may range from essentially fresh water in estuaries, such as along the east coast of the United States, to extreme hypersaline lagoons, such as Laguna Madre in Texas. Coastal environments may be in excess of a hundred meters deep (fjords) or may extend several meters above sea level in the form of dunes. Some coastal environments are well protected and are not subjected to high physical energy except for occasional storms, whereas beaches and tidal inlets are continuously modified by waves and currents.
