Book Synopsis A Scary Little Christmas by : Matthew C. DuPée
Download or read book A Scary Little Christmas written by Matthew C. DuPée and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversial yet beloved among audiences, Christmas-themed horror movies emerged in the early 1970s and gained a notorious reputation with Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), depicting Santa as an ax-wielding maniac. Some parents and conservative groups condemned the film, while others embraced the portrayal of Yuletide as a backdrop for fear and dread. Drawing on interviews with directors, producers, special effects artists, photographers and actors, this book celebrates the sordid, colorful history of the Christmas horror subgenre. Psycho Santa films such as Christmas Evil (1980) and 3615 code Pere Noel (1989) are examined, along with "Yule-Die" slashers like The Dorm that Dripped Blood (1982), Black Christmas (1974) and Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972). Commercial successes like Gremlins (1984) and Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) are covered, as well as more recent releases such as Better Watch Out (2016), Red Christmas (2016) and Deathcember (2019). Rare photographs, promotional materials and an annotated filmography are provided.

Download or read book Krampus Confidential written by Kyle Sullivan and published by Hazy Fables. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's almost Christmas, but the nights in Tinseltown are anything but silent. Ruprecht, a twelve-year-old krampus and wannabe detective, gets more than he bargained for when he takes the case of a terrified elf. Finding himself at the top of the Tinseltown Police Department's naughty list, Ruprecht is joined by his best friend, a ghost named Marley, to explore the underbelly of this festive but gritty metropolis, solve the mystery, and clear his name for good. Book 3 of the Hazy Fables middle-grade series, this quick-witted parody of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon follows up its acclaimed predecessors, Zombie, Or Not to Be (a brainy adaptation of Hamlet) and Hobgoblin and the Seven Stinkers of Rancidia (a Kirkus Best Book of 2019). Featuring powerful witches, a greedy goblin, a colossal cat, a "psychic" reindeer, and a platoon of shadowy phantoms, this whip-smart thriller celebrates the delightfully dark side of Christmas with mystery, intrigue, and a sleighful of characters from European folklore.

In the Krampus' world, witches rule Christmas, and saints can sometimes kill.
Book Synopsis Santa Claus Worldwide by : Tom A. Jerman
Download or read book Santa Claus Worldwide written by Tom A. Jerman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive history of the world's midwinter gift-givers, showcasing the extreme diversity in their depictions as well as the many traits and functions these characters share. It tracks the evolution of these figures from the tribal priests who presided over winter solstice celebrations thousands of years before the birth of Christ, to Christian notables like St. Martin and St. Nicholas, to a variety of secular figures who emerged throughout Europe following the Protestant Reformation. Finally, it explains how the popularity of a poem about a "miniature sleigh" and "eight tiny reindeer" helped consolidate the diverse European gift-givers into an enduring tradition in which American children awake early on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought. Although the names, appearance, attire and gift-giving practices of the world's winter solstice gift-givers differ greatly, they are all recognizable as Santa, the personification of the Christmas and Midwinter festivals. Despite efforts to eliminate him by groups as diverse as the Puritans of seventeenth century New England, the Communist Party of the twentieth century Soviet Union and the government of Nazi Germany, Santa has survived and prospered, becoming one of the best known and most beloved figures in the world.
Download or read book Grafted written by Robert Keck and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to share a simple guide to what the Torah (“to guide or teach”) tells us about living life the way God wishes. When I began to study my Hebrew roots (I do not believe I am a Jew, though I could be; the ten tribes of the house of Israel never returned from captivity and assimilated into the societies they were taken to. I’m happy to acknowledge that I may only be a “stranger that sojourneth among you” [Exodus 12:49]), I could not find a simple list of things that said, “Do this, eat that”, etc., so I wrote this one. Jesus admonished the Pharisees for teaching traditions (Talmud) and obscuring the law (Torah) through their religious edicts and practices. God said that His Commandments are not difficult, but over the centuries, Jewish leaders have added to God’s statutes as a way of helping the Jewish people to avoid close proximity with sin. The intentions initially were good, but the practices became a religion unto themselves, and the Jews lost the message of God’s love in the endless procedures and rules proscribed by the Talmud. Jesus kept the entire law, as did the apostles Paul, Peter, James, Stephen, et al. We err when we teach that Christianity is something new. Neither Jesus nor the apostles ever advocated anything new. They remained committed Hebrews all their days, and to teach otherwise is not only wrong but also calamitous to our Christian walk. One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD. (Numbers 15:15–16; see also Romans 11:16–27)

Book excerpt: “Terrific. A wild ride….I loved it. It hooked me and I couldn’t put it down.” —Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy "Brom is that rare breed: a person who is skilled in more than one area of artistic expression. Here's hoping that he will continue to share his dark and often beautiful dreams with us for many years to come." --Christopher Paolini, New York Times bestselling author of Eragon Acclaimed author and artist Brom raised eyebrows and pulse rates with The Child Thief, his grim, brilliantly audacious, gorgeously illustrated reimagining of the Peter Pan legend. So what does this innovative fantasist do for an encore? He tinkers darkly with the beloved mythology of Santa Claus. Set in Appalachia, Krampus the Yule Lord is a twisted fairytale about a failed West Virginia songwriter who gets ensnared on Christmas Eve in an eternal war between a not-so-saintly Saint Nick and his dark enemy Krampus, aka Black Peter, an ancient trickster demon. Krampus the Yule Lord is Gregory Maguire (Wicked) meets Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) in the realm of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, as Clive Barker (Mr. B. Gone) works his dark sorcery from the shadows. Once again featuring Brom’s chillingly beautiful artwork throughout, Krampus the Yule Lord is a feast of wonder straight from the kitchen of Sweeney Todd.
