Book Synopsis Technology Transfer and International Production by : Jin W. Cyhn
Download or read book Technology Transfer and International Production written by Jin W. Cyhn and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-03-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book analyses the technology development efforts of Korea's electronics industry (the country's largest exporter). It asks how the Korean electronics industry was able to develop, both in terms of production and technology, despite low inflows of licensing and foreign direct investments. The books argues that the key to its spectacular growth has been through its participation and learning from an inter-firm arrangement called original equipment manufacturing arrangement (OEM). A number of firm-level case studies on the Korean electronics industry support this argument. The role of the government, especially related to its technology policy, has also been analysed. The government was effective in providing financial incentives for the firms' technological upgrading efforts, but its supplying of direct technological assistance had limited success. Overall, this book argues that contrary to many previous studies, the role of multinational enterprises has been significant in the development of Korea's electronics industry, and that they have acted as a 'technological tutor' for Korea through OEM"--P. xiv.tributors, world 0̲.

Book Synopsis European Integration and Foreign Direct Investment in the EU by : Shin Sang-Hyup
Download or read book European Integration and Foreign Direct Investment in the EU written by Shin Sang-Hyup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the fundamental question why and under which conditions Korean firms increased their investment so heavily in the EU after 1986 and why they and not the Korean government took the initiative in the decision-making process. The author contends that the main reason for the firm's departure from government policy is the belief of the Korean government that national competitiveness, which largely affects the country's standard of living, is determined by the success of local firms in global competition. The author substantiates his argument by supplying comprehensive surveys of twenty-six Korean consumer electronics firms and concomitant interviews with senior managers in nine of these. The empirical material suggests that Korean consumer electronics firms were principally motivated by their need to seek market security through a 'globalization' strategy.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's global expansion has been mirrored by its interest and presence in Southeast Asia. From trade, investment, aid, tourism, to the cultural "Korean wave", its various roles have blossomed and its influence has grown. The ASEAN region has not only affected Korean foreign policy, but also many aspects of Korean life, from the migration of Southeast Asian industrial workers to marriages and the curricula of academic institutions. This volume explores various aspects of these new relationships and their importance to all concerned parties. It brings together a group of specialists who have documented the growing interlocking roles between Korea and ASEAN and its constituent states in detail. These developments have profound implications for relations in the East and Southeast Asian regions, and for the world as a whole.

Book Synopsis New Multinational Enterprises from Korea and Taiwan by : Roger van Hoesel
Download or read book New Multinational Enterprises from Korea and Taiwan written by Roger van Hoesel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first substantive study of emerging multinationals (MNEs) from Asian economies, drawing on the unique experiences of South Korea and Taiwan. Combining an econometric investigation with detailed case studies of leading Korean and Taiwanese electronics companies, it aims to demystify the nature and theoretical implications of these dynamic economic regions. The author argues that many of these `new multinationals do not possess the characteristics typically ascribed to MNEs, such as technological leadership, strong marketing positions or advanced managerial capabilities. This is highlighted by documentation of recent developments in outward investment from Korea and Taiwan at both micro and macro level. The implications of the recent Asian crisis for the internationaliztion of Korean and Taiwanese firms are also explored.
