Book excerpt: Trade flows, cities and kinship relations can all be seen as elements of complex networks. In this collection of essays, all of which deal with Asia, we argue that there are good reasons to envisage them as various dimensions of the same networks. Nevertheless, it is fairly rare to find trade, cities and kinship relations as intimately linked as we have portrayed them in this volume, because they are usually classified within different sub-disciplines of history, whose practitioners are all too often not inclined to talk to people outside their own field. The Australian born historian Heather Sutherland, who recently retired from the VU university in Amsterdam, is an exception in this respect because most of her work gravitates towards an approach which aims to integrate this trinity of topics. This collection of essays, written by a number of her students and close colleagues, has taken its cue from her approach. It is not the case that all the contributions deal with all three topics but they as a collective demonstrate how flows of trade, cities--both as urban centres and nodes in wider networks--and kinship relations hang together, and how the study of one topic opens new vistas on the other two, revealing causal links that otherwise would have remained hidden. Thus, the essays in this collective volume support the idea that trade, towns and kin--although often dealt with quite separately--can be viewed as various aspects of the same networks, connecting people, places and commodities.

The aim of ICEL (International Conference on Advances in Humanities, Education and Language) is to provide a platform for researchers, professionals, academicians as well as industrial professionals from all over the world to present their research results and development activities in Education, humanities, and Language. The theme of ICEL 2019 was “Mainstreaming the Influences on Higher Order of Thinking Skills in Humanities, Education, and Language in Industrial Revolution 4.0”. The technical program of ICEL 2019 consisted of 77 full papers, including invited papers in oral presentation sessions at the main conference tracks. Aside from the high quality technical paper presentations, the technical program also featured six keynote speeches, Hamamah, Ph.D (Univeritas Brawijaya, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Nuraihan binti Mat Daud (UIIM, Malaysia), Dr. Edith Dunn (Conservator/Cultural Specialist, USA), Prof. Yoshihiko -Sugimura (university of Mizaki, Japan), Prof. Park Yoonho (Sunchon National University, Korea) and Prof. Su Keh Bow (Soochow University, Taiwan). We strongly believe that ICEL conference provides a good forum for all researchers, developers and practitioners to discuss various advances that are relevant to education, humanities, and language. We also expect that the future ICEL conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume uses a ‘constructivist/reflexive’ approach to address critical infrastructure protection (CIP), a central political practice associated with national security. The politics of CIP, and the construction of the threat they are meant to counter, effectively establish a powerful discursive connection between that the traditional and normal conditions for day-to-day politics and the exceptional dynamics of national security. Combining political theory and empirical case studies, this volume addresses key issues related to protection and the governance of insecurity in the contemporary world. The contributors track the transformation and evolution of critical infrastructures (and closely related issues of homeland security) into a security problem, and analyze how practices associated with CIP constitute, and are an expression of, changing notions of security and insecurity. The book explores aspects of ‘securitisation’ as well as at practices, audiences, and contexts that enable and constrain the production of the specific form of governmentality that CIP exemplifies. It also explores the rationalities at play, the effects of these security practices, and the implications for our understanding of security and politics today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesians of Chinese descent constitute only two to three per cent of the country s population but dominate the private business sector. Serious acts of violence against this ethnic minority occurred during Indonesia s colonial past, and after a period relatively free of such incidents became increasingly frequent during the final years of Suharto s New Order. In this first book-length study of anti-Chinese hostility during the collapse of Suharto s regime, Jemma Purdey presents a close analysis of the main incidents of violence during the transitional period between 1996 and 1999, and the unprecedented process of national reflection that ensued. The mass violence that accompanied the fall of the regime in May 1998 affected not only ethnic Chinese but also indigenous or pribumi Indonesians. The author places anti-Chinese riots within this broader context, considering causes and agency as well as the way violence has been represented. While ethnicity and prejudice are central to the explanation put forward, she concludes that politics, economics and religion offer additional keys to understanding why such outbreaks occurred.
