This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on biomimicry assessment tools studies the concepts of sustainability, sustainable construction practices, and the evaluation categories that constitute a sustainability assessment tool. By exploring and drawing lessons from biomimicry principles, the book provides a nature-inspired assessment tool to aid and guide the sustainable transformation of the built environment. The book encapsulates the attributes of the conceptualised biomimicry assessment tool, which is aimed at helping practitioners, regulatory bodies, and governmental and non-governmental agencies in greening the built environment. Owing to the dire need for country-specific and tailor-made tools that address developing countries' needs, this book serves as a practical reference and theoretical springboard for the development of sustainability assessment tools for the built environment. Furthermore, the book serves as a guide in navigating the path towards achieving the greening agendas of the built environment and other sectors and seeks to align the new biomimicry assessment tool with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is important reading for academics, professionals and advanced students in the built environment, engineering, and sustainable development.

Book excerpt: The World Bank East Asia and Pacific Economic Update is a comprehensive, twice-yearly review of the region's economies prepared by the East Asia and Pacific region of the World Bank. In this edition, the report notes that the region is expected to contribute almost 40 percent of global growth in 2012, and a similar share in 2013. China's economic slowdown affected the region's economic performance. China's growth is projected to reach 7.9 percent this year, 1.4 percentage points lower than last year's 9.3 percent and the lowest growth rate since 1999. For 2014, we expect most countries in the region to benefit from a mild recovery in advanced countries as well as continued strong domestic demand. For economies in the region that face difficulties in budget execution, particularly of the capital budget, fiscal interventions could focus on increasing private domestic demand, such as targeted social assistance or investment tax credits.

It focuses on the use of traditional knowledge, new innovation and education to build a culture of safety and resilience at all levels in order to promote sustainable development goals in general and disaster risk reduction in particular. The global climate has changed substantially over the last century. There is strong evidence of global climate change in the form of increase in air and sea surface temperature, recession of glaciers, changes and shifting of climate regimes, increasing number of extreme events and sea levels changes. The increasing frequency of climate change induced disasters in particular is posing a threat to resilience, lives and livelihoods at global, regional and local levels. Major ecosystems of the world have experienced several climate induced disaster events in recent past. This book provides new insights into the occurrence and impacts of climatic extremes and strategies for disaster risk reduction. It includes studies on rainfall and temperature trends, floods and drought disasters, weather and climatic related disasters in mountains, changes in plant activities, risk assessment and responses in different ecosystems of the world. The book is particularly useful for environmental and disaster managers, researchers and graduate students, as well as policy makers.

The Atlas of Environmental Migration is the first illustrated publication mapping this complex phenomenon. It clarifies terminology and concepts, draws a typology of migration related to environment and climate change, describes the multiple factors at play, explains the challenges, and highlights the opportunities related to this phenomenon. Through elaborate maps, diagrams, illustrations, case studies from all over the world based on the most updated international research findings, the Atlas guides the reader from the roots of environmental migration through to governance. In addition to the primary audience of students and scholars of environment studies, climate change, geography and migration it will also be of interest to researchers and students in politics, economics and international relations departments.

This book was released on 2022-10-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central Highlands are an important area in Sri Lanka that generates important ecosystem services for the country. However, the area suffers from land degradation and related issues. The project “Rehabilitation of Degraded Agricultural Lands in Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya Districts in the Central Highlands” (GCP/SRL/063/GFF) was designed to tackle the above-mentioned challenges. The terminal evaluation found that the project generated relevant planned and unplanned outcomes including spontaneous dissemination of project models (e.g. tea smallholding productivity improvement) and demand for replication and use of Participatory Land Use Development Plans (PLUDP) as national model for village level resource planning. Positive gender results and lateral dissemination of technology and strengthened peer-to-peer learning were evaluation findings. The recommendations include: i) the project should catalyse and showcase their knowledge management, training and outreach related innovations post COVID-19; ii) future projects trying to innovate conservation approaches beyond the traditional ones should receive dedicated, embedded technical advisory support; iii) long-term and innovative financing should be embedded into sustainable land use models in project and pilot design; and iv) land use planning and development planning should be connected.
