Book excerpt: This is a cross-sectional study that investigated the relationship between preconception care knowledge, trait mindfulness, perceived discrimination, and coping self-efficacy. It addressed the lack of research into the effects of pregnancy-related distress on maternal mortality in African American women. There were 117 participants ages 18 -30 whose data was collected through an online survey. The results suggest that greater preconception care knowledge predicts greater pregnancy-related distress coping self-efficacy. Trait mindfulness also predicted pregnancy-related distress coping self-efficacy. Perceived discrimination did not predict coping self- efficacy in a negative direction as expected.

Book excerpt: Black women's work adjustment is not well understood because few studies have examined the work experiences of this group in enough depth, and these studies have failed to incorporate work adjustment indices that are well-supported in the literature. This study looks to further the work adjustment literature of black women by testing the relationships between a well-studied index of work adjustment (job satisfaction), a measure of mental health functioning (psychological distress), and two psychological variables purported to influence black women's work-experiences: perceived discrimination, and self-efficacy for coping with discrimination. Hypotheses are tested using data from the 1995 Detroit Area Study. Subjects are 181 black women employed full time with a mean age of 39.69 years, and a mean income of $36,080. Additionally, the majority of these subjects completed high-school or received their GED (n = 129). Bivariate correlations, bivariate linear regressions, and an independent sample t test are used to test the hypotheses in this study. Social Cognitive Career Theory is also used as a framework for interpreting the results further. The findings reveal that perceptions of discrimination are significantly associated with job satisfaction and psychological distress, that self-efficacy for coping with discrimination is significantly associated with psychological distress, and that age is a significant predictor of job satisfaction. Contrary to the hypotheses in this study, self-efficacy for coping with discrimination did not emerge as a significant moderator in the models predicting job satisfaction and psychological distress. However, these results should be interpreted cautiously due to the limitations of the self-efficacy for coping measure in the present study. Implications for interventions and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Past research has shown that there are few positive ethnically diverse role models in American society (Hackett & Betz, 1981). African-American women have identified the lack of racially identical role models as a significant barrier to attaining leadership positions within Corporate America. A cross-sectional survey was administered to explore how mass media images depicting counter-stereotypical images of African-American role models affect the self-efficacy beliefs of African-American women (195 respondents, 51%). The researcher also examined the participant ability to cope with stress and their reported level of career aspirations as predictors of their level of identification with the potential role model. The results indicated that African-American women have lower levels of both self-efficacy and career aspirations than women of other races (187 respondents, 49%). The results also indicated that the participant ability to cope with stress and level of career aspirations predicated their level of identification. Furthermore, the study found that a potential role models race significantly influenced the participants level of identification. This research will foster social change by identifying an effective approach to combating historical stereotypes that lower the self-efficacy of African-American women. Increasing the self-efficacy of African-American women could advance opportunities for minority women leadership and reduce the leadership gap in Corporate America.

Book excerpt: Research suggests that Black women use emotion-focused coping to manage reactions to discrimination. Black women are a multiple marginalized population experiencing gender and race related stress, and greater overall life stress. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which Black women utilize emotion-focused strategies to cope with perceived discrimination and whether within race differences exist. It was hypothesized that locus of control, spirituality and ethnicity would be related to coping. In addition, it was hypothesized that ethnicity would moderate the relations of internal locus of control and spirituality to coping. The current study utilized data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL). Internal locus of control and spirituality were associated with coping, both p's> .05. Ethnicity was not related to coping nor did it moderate the relations of internal locus of control and spirituality to coping. Clinical implications, limitations and future directions are discussed.

Specifically, it was designed to determine if the TRiO program was a good indicator of producing statistically significant outcomes in college self-efficacy and perseverance of first-generation African American Women (AAW) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)-related disciplines in comparison to those who were not enrolled in TRiO. The research design for this study was inferential statistics with a causal-comparative design. This study consisted of 55 participants enrolled at a large, 4-year, public, doctoral degree-granting institution in the Southeastern rural region of the United States who identify as first-generation AAW. Out of the 55 participants, the researcher identified 31 AAW who (a) were enrolled in STEM-related disciplines during the spring 2018 semester and (b) who were enrolled in a TRiO program. Analysis using a series of one-way ANCOVA tests found TRiO to not have a statistically significant difference for the perseverance score, consistency score, course efficacy score, and the social efficacy score. Moreover, years of participation in a TRiO program positively correlated with social efficacy. A Multiple Regression was conducted, and it was found that for social efficacy there was a statistically significant difference for the number of years of participation in a TRiO program. This study generated limited results in regards to identifying a statistical significant difference in the impact of college self-efficacy and perseverance of first-generation AAW in STEM-related disciplines based on their demographic characteristics (e.g., age, classification, family income) for the perseverance score, consistency score, course efficacy score, and the social efficacy score. Conclusions based on the findings in this study indicated that years of participation in TRiO positively correlated with social efficacy as there was a statistically significant difference for the number of years of participation in TRiO. Therefore, the researcher recommends that a longitudinal study be designed to monitor participants’ college self-efficacy and perseverance from their freshman year to their senior year of college.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant difference in career decision self-efficacy for African American women after participating in a short-term, adult education intervention program and to give voice to barriers and challenges experienced by African American women in their career development and the coping strategies they use to overcome these obstacles. In this quasi-experimental mixed methods study, a snowball sample of 20 African American women participated in a short-term adult education intervention program designed using Black feminist critical social theory and the career management model of social cognitive career theory. A pre-test-post-test control group design with delayed treatment was used to conduct the study. The sample included an experimental group (n=11) and a delayed treatment/control group (n=9) that participated in a career management information session before the intervention. Wilcoxon exact testing of Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form scores revealed statistically significant differences for the experimental group (Z=-2.298, p=.010, r=.49), delayed treatment group (Z=-2.668, p=.002, r=.62), control group (Z=-2.036, p=.023, r=.48), and between post-information session and post-intervention session for the delayed treatment group (Z=-2.253, p=.012, r=.53). Documents from the discussion of career development barriers, challenges, and coping strategies were analyzed using critical Black feminist narrative qualitative analysis and the following eight themes were noted: external barriers of a) intersectionality of oppressions and b) work life balance; internal challenges of c) self-concept, d) emotions, and e) access to resources; and, coping strategies of f) personal agency, g) collective agency, and h) spiritual agency.
