Suicide is the second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15 to 24, and it is ranked third for children ages 10 to 14. Suicide is the most commonly encountered clinical crisis for professionals in the field. Clinicians' attitudes toward suicide plays a large role in the manner suicidal patients are treated.Understanding attitudes toward suicide, especially among youth-serving professionals, is a critical component of effective suicide prevention and treatment. The aim of this systematic review of literature was to examine how education, culture, and clinical exposure to suicide impact professionals’ general attitudes towards suicide in children and adolescents. Findings indicate that attitudes towards suicidal youth were impacted by the professionals' level of education, training, clinical experience and supervision, perceived responsibility and role, perceived competence, and personal beliefs regarding motives attributed to the youths' self-harm and suicidal behavior. There was a gap in the literature examining the impact cultural background, acculturation, or level of acculturation to US society has on the professionals' attitudes towards suicidal youth; as such further research is needed in this area. Furthermore, in order to improve treatment of youth suicide, particular attention needs to be focused on the professionals' own personal biases, attitudes, and beliefs regarding the topic. Ongoing and continuous training in suicide prevention and intervention is needed among all professionals working with children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It has been accompanied by substantial changes in the leading methods of youth suicide, especially among young girls. Much work is underway to elucidate the relationships between psychopathology, substance use, child abuse, bullying, internet use, and youth suicidal behaviour. Recent evidence also suggests sex-specific and moderating roles of gender in influencing risk for suicide and suicidal behaviour. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents globally, accounting for 11% of all deaths to youth ages 12 to 19 between 1999 and 2006, and rates of attempting suicide and suicidal ideation are higher than those of completed suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 157,000 youth between the ages of 10 and 24 receive medical care at emergency departments for self-inflicted injuries each year. Data from the 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey show that 16% of youth reported seriously considering suicide, 13% reported creating a plan, and 8% reported trying to take their own lives in the 12 months preceding the survey. The bulk of existing research on adolescent suicide focuses on psychological explanations and individual-level risk factors for suicide, including mental health, substance use patterns, and exposure to traumatic life events, such as sexual abuse. This work is critical because it identifies individuals at the greatest risk of suicide and provides clear intervention strategies to address individuals’ unique paths to suicidal ideation.
