Coral reef resources provided food, medicines, and building materials for Native Hawaiians, as well as played an important role in social and cultural customs and traditions (Titcomb, 1972; Kirch, 1982). The traditional Native Hawaiian resource management system utilized in-depth knowledge of ocean resources to reduce waste and ensure long-term resource use. Over the last two centuries, however, economic, cultural, and political changes have altered and broken down traditional Native Hawaiian land and water use and management systems (Friedlander, 2004; Jokiel et al., 2011). Wide-scale degradation of nearshore resources likely began 100 to 200 years ago with the settlement of Western populations. Agriculture and livestock grazing became the primary land uses on Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lanaʻi, which contributed to erosion and sedimentation on nearshore reefs (Gulko et al., 2002). Dredging and the filling in of nearshore reefs for residential, commercial, and military expansion led to continued reef degradation, especially in the last 100 years. Other changes include stream channelization and increased paving of land, which has reduced sediment erosion but increased runoff"--Conclusions. Here we explore high school students' educational reef experiences with respect to specific learning outcomes. Students were surveyed and interviewed as they were trained in coral reef ecology and monitoring in both the classroom and at various sites in the Great Barrier Reef. The Three A's of Coastal and Marine Studies (Marine Education Society of Australasia) are awareness, attitudes and action. This presupposes a learning situation where a gain in knowledge (awareness) will lead to a change in attitude, and thereby improve positive personal actions toward marine environments. This research analyses the link between the knowledge-attitude-action variables in relation to the effect of direct reef experience. This work addressed the question of proximal relations between humans and coral reefs. It brought together literature and techniques from varying disciplines to generate statistical findings, while student accounts confirmed the learning value of structured activities underwater as part of reef trips.

Greenhouse gas emissions and the associated increases in ocean temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been implicated in increased reports of coral bleaching, disease outbreaks, and ocean acidification (OA). For the hundreds of millions of people who depend on reefs for food or livelihoods, the thousands of communities that depend on reefs for wave protection, the people whose cultural practices are tied to reef resources, and the many economies that depend on reefs for fisheries or tourism, the health and maintenance of this major global ecosystem is crucial. A growing body of research on coral physiology, ecology, molecular biology, and responses to stress has revealed potential tools to increase coral resilience. Some of this knowledge is poised to provide practical interventions in the short-term, whereas other discoveries are poised to facilitate research that may later open the doors to additional interventions. A Research Review of Interventions to Increase the Persistence and Resilience of Coral Reefs reviews the state of science on genetic, ecological, and environmental interventions meant to enhance the persistence and resilience of coral reefs. The complex nature of corals and their associated microbiome lends itself to a wide range of possible approaches. Book excerpt: Marine education research designs are discussed, and student learning outcomes while monitoring a coral reef is evaluated. Changes in environmental knowledge and attitudes, ecological intention to act, and direct reef experience were investigated. Differences between student pre-test and the post-test responses were observed, and analysis is considered consisting of empirically generated results and student accounts. Environmental knowledge, environmental attitudes and intention to act were evaluated using a multi-method quasi-experimental design, and their affect by reef experience is investigated. Initial environmental knowledge scores were low and were most changed by a classroom presentation and reef monitoring trip combination, the reef learning experience elicited the largest positive shift in environmental attitudes as well as ecological intention to act, and students who had never been to the reef showed the greatest amount of change. This article reports on methodologies developed for evaluating marine education and investigating outdoor marine learning with Australian high school students. Research limitations are also discussed, and information is provided for researchers interested in evaluating education programs.(Contains 2 figures and 3 tables.).

They are the 'rain forests of the sea,' containing the richest biodiversity of all marine ecosystems. This book examines the biological aspects of coral reefs and the importance of their existence. Environmental threats to coral reefs are reviewed (i.e., global warming, overfishing), and ways in which the coral reef ecosystem can be restored are also discussed. Marine ornamental fish play an extremely important role today in the international fish trade. The data on breeding and rearing protocols for some of these high value marine ornamental species are reviewed. Phototrophic dinoflagellates called zooxanthellae and their possible role in coral reef management are also described. Furthermore, the causes of reef damage such as destructive fishing methods are examined. Other examples of adverse human impacts on coral reef sustainability, such as over-fishing, are also reviewed. It is suggested that coral calcification is closely coupled with carbon dioxide in seawater. This book describes the impact of anthropogenic surface ocean acidification with increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide on coral calcification. In addition, changes of caspases in the brains of hypoxic fish are examined by comparing a coral reef with a freshwater teleost. The effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and related climate change on shallow coral reefs are gaining considerable attention for scientific and economic reasons worldwide. Although increased scientific research has improved our understanding of the response of coral reefs to climate change, we still lack key information that can help guide reef management. Research and monitoring of coral reef ecosystems over the past few decades have documented two major threats related to increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2: (1) increased sea surface temperatures and (2) increased seawater acidity (lower pH). Higher atmospheric CO2 levels have resulted in rising sea surface temperatures and proven to be an acute threat to corals and other reef-dwelling organisms. Short periods (days) of elevated sea surface temperatures by as little as 1–2°C above the normal maximum temperature has led to more frequent and more widespread episodes of coral bleaching-the expulsion of symbiotic algae. A more chronic consequence of increasing atmospheric CO2 is the lowering of pH of surface waters, which affects the rate at which corals and other reef organisms secrete and build their calcium carbonate skeletons. Average pH of the surface ocean has already decreased by an estimated 0.1 unit since preindustrial times, and will continue to decline in concert with rising atmospheric CO2. These climate-related Stressors combined with other direct anthropogenic assaults, such as overfishing and pollution, weaken reef organisms and increase their susceptibility to disease.
