Book excerpt: Since knowledge was recognized as a crucial part of intelligent systems in the 1970s and early 1980s, the problem of the systematic and efficient acquisition of knowledge was an important research problem. In the early days of expert systems, the focus of knowledge acquisition was to design a suitable knowledge base for the problem - main by eliciting the knowledge from available experts before the system was c- pleted and deployed. Over the years, alternative approaches were developed, such as incremental approaches which would build a provisional knowledge base initially and would improve the knowledge base while the system was used in practice. Other approaches sought to build knowledge bases fully automatically by employing machine-learning methods. In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.

This book presents three major approaches of current research in this field, namely the psychological approach, the artificial intelligence approach and the software engineering approach. Special attention is paid to the most recent advances in knowledge acquisition research, especially those made by Chinese computer scientists. A special chapter is devoted to its applications in other fields, e.g. language analysis, software engineering, computer-aided instruction, etc., which were done in China.

Book excerpt: Knowledge Discovery from Legal Databases is the first text to describe data mining techniques as they apply to law. Law students, legal academics and applied information technology specialists are guided thorough all phases of the knowledge discovery from databases process with clear explanations of numerous data mining algorithms including rule induction, neural networks and association rules. Throughout the text, assumptions that make data mining in law quite different to mining other data are made explicit. Issues such as the selection of commonplace cases, the use of discretion as a form of open texture, transformation using argumentation concepts and evaluation and deployment approaches are discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the eleventh British National Conference on Databases, held at Keele University, England. A dominant themein the volume is the provision of the means to enhance the capabilities of databases to handle information that has a rich semantic structure. A major research question is how to achieve such a semantic scale-up without sacrificing performance. There are currently two main paradigms within which it is possible to propose answers to this question, deduction-oriented and object-oriented. Both paradigms are well represented in this collection, with the balance in the direction of the deductive approach, which is followed by both the invited papers, by Michael Freeston from the European Computer-Industry Research Centre in Munich and Carlo Zaniolo from the University of California at Los Angeles. In addition, the volume contains 13 full papers selected from a total of36 submissions.

The integration of AI technology and database management has developed into an important research topic, and many AI methods, such as logic programming, natural language understanding, knowledge-bases, etc., have been applied to the development of intelligent database systems capable of deduction, natural language query understanding, cooperative query answering, and substantial query guidance. In this book, the authors review some knowledge-base assisted database access techniques, incorporating techniques to form a new kind of database front-end. The results of these applications are summarized and explained.

Book excerpt: "Methodological knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering have achievedincreasing attention in recent years due both to active research projects and to successful practical applications. Both aspects have over the years been reflected in the structure of the European Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (EKAW), where a users' forum has always been combined with a scientific workshop. This volume contains the proceedings of EKAW-92. The papers are organized into five thematic sectionson: - Technology transfer - General modelling approaches - Knowledgeformalization and automated methods - Elicitation and diagnosis of human knowledge - Practice and experiences of knowledge acquisition. A total of 65 persons from around the world served as the program committee. Their recommendations and sometimes very detailed comments helped both workshop organizers and individual authors to achieve the high quality reflected in this volume."--PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE.
