Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comes, first of all, as the answer to the yearning for more written literature on the identity of the Igbo people of the southeast of Nigeria. The early chapters deal with their geographical and historical identity. Then it holds a searchlight on the Igbo worldview: their sociocultural values and traditions, their religious concepts the nature and character of the supreme being; their family agnates, relationships, and the structure and elements of social control dynamics, which are unknown to the Western world. The showcase also discusses some very powerful elements and traditions that give the Igbo their peculiar identity: the kola nut tradition, Igbo name, and food culture. This book is also a road map of the Igbo experience in the context of Nigerian histopolitical developments from 1914 to 1976: the crises, the pogrom, and the Biafran phenomenon, and the Ikemba Saga. Other hallmarks of this book include the profile of great personages: Igbo greatest heroes past and present, the icons of Igbo identity on both national and international scenes. And finally, it concludes with the roll call: an amazing catalog of more than four thousand Igbo traditional names.

Book excerpt: Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in the world, expected in some projections to have a population of 25 million by 2025. This will make it the biggest metropolis in sub-Saharan Africa and possibly the world's third largest city. This phenomenal and continuing growth gives it a heady turbulence, especially as it only took on the form of a coherent urban entity in the eighteenth century. After Nigeria's independence Lagos remained both trading hub and, for thirty years, a federal capital and political vortex. Now its driving sense of 'can-do', its outreach and vitality, make it a fulcrum and a channel for commercial and cultural talent. Kaye Whiteman explores a city that has constantly re-invented itself, from the first settlement on an uninhabited island to the creation of the port in the early years of the twentieth century. Lagos is still defined by its curious network of islands and lagoons, where erosion and reclamation lead to a permanently shifting topography, but history has thrust it into the role of a burgeoning mega-city, overcoming all nature's obstacles. The city's melting-pot has fertilised a unique literary and artistic flowering that is only now beginning to be appreciated by a world that has only seen slums and chaos. COLONIAL CITY: Portuguese influences; the 1861 Treaty of Cession and the British colonialists; architectural traces: schools and government buildings; the move towards independence. CITY OF ENTREPRENEURS: trading through the centuries: Sierra Leoneans and Brazilians; traditional markets and modern malls; the Central Business District. THE CITY OF WORDS AND MUSIC: a counterpoint to the alleged philistinism of its businessmen; the views of writers Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe; artist and sculptor Ben Enwonwu; the musical genius Fela Kuti.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories about American women who marry foreign men abound-but none of them are quite like this one. Written in three parts, First Wife begins where life started for Dr. Robena Egemonye-being raised by her grandparents, Papa and Jack, in Anderson, South Carolina. A brave, smart soul practically from birth, Dr. Egemonye fills her memoir with personal anecdotes-some that will make you laugh, cry, cringe, or sigh with great relief. Read how her family defies the laws of segregation to get her a life-saving surgery. Come face to face with her courage to out her negligent second-grade teacher-over and over again-even after being threatened. Witness her being admitted to top universities despite the odds against her. And of course, experience her falling in love with a Nigerian man, marrying him in Manchester, England, giving birth to their children in America and going with him to his homeland. While there, she became the first American to earn a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from a Sub-Saharan Africa University, the University of Lagos in 1984. This inspirational memoir reads like a journey filled with breathtaking scenery and life-changing experiences along the way. If you are a history buff or simply love a good story with lots of details, you will enjoy every page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is potentially one of the giants of Africa and indeed the world. Myopia and acrebral waste by functional semi-illiterate military dictators in khaki has ruined Nigeria and continues to ruin the country. The instinct of the military is akin to those of armed robbers, as they operate by force of arms over unarmed and defenceless civilians. Military rule imposed by force of arms against unarmed and defenceless civilians is government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people. Civilian rule is not always democratic rule. Civilian rule imposed upon the people by vote-rigging machines called political parties are as effective as guns as an instrument of oppression of the people and looting of the treasury. Civilian government of the people, not by the people, and not for the people, is exactly the same as military government, as they are the masters of the people. The people did not appoint them, and the people cannot sack them. Nigeria should be governed with the best interests of children at the forefront of all that is done. Their anticipated future needs must be the pillar of every plan. Nigerians are the country’s most important natural resource, and will last far longer than its gas and oil reserves. Treat the people well and the country will respond in kind. Above all, give the poor and their children the “tool” they need to fly Nigeria above the dark clouds that cover it.
