Book Synopsis Semantic Relations and the Lexicon by : M. Lynne Murphy
Download or read book Semantic Relations and the Lexicon written by M. Lynne Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-02 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semantic Relations and the Lexicon explores the many paradigmatic semantic relations between words, such as synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy, and their relevance to the mental organization of our vocabularies. Drawing on a century's research in linguistics, psychology, philosophy, anthropology and computer science, M. Lynne Murphy proposes a pragmatic approach to these relations. Whereas traditional approaches have claimed that paradigmatic relations are part of our lexical knowledge, Dr Murphy argues that they constitute metalinguistic knowledge, which can be derived through a single relational principle, and may also be stored as part of our extra-lexical, conceptual representations of a word. Part I shows how this approach can account for the properties of lexical relations in ways that traditional approaches cannot, and Part II examines particular relations in detail. This book will serve as an informative handbook for all linguists and cognitive scientists interested in the mental representation of vocabulary.

Book Synopsis Language, Power and Ideology by : Ruth Wodak
Download or read book Language, Power and Ideology written by Ruth Wodak and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of Language and Ideology has increasingly gained importance in the linguistic sciences. The general aim of critical linguistics is the exploration of the mechanisms of power which establish inequality, through the systematic analysis of political discourse (written or oral). This reader contains papers on a variety of topics, all related to each other through explicit discussions on the notion of ideology from an interdisciplinary approach with illustrative analyses of texts from the media, newspapers, schoolbooks, pamphlets, talkshows, speeches concerning language policy in Nazi-Germany, in Italofascism, and also policies prevalent nowadays. Among the interesting subjects studied are the jargon of the student movement of 1968, speeches of politicians, racist and sexist discourse, and the language of the green movement. Because of the enormous influence of the media nowadays, the explicit analysis of the mechanisms of manipulation, suggestion, and persuasion inherent in language or about language behaviour and strategies of discourse are of social relevance and of interest to all scholars of social sciences, to readers in all educational institutions, to analysts of political discourse, and to critical readers at large.

Book Synopsis Quentin Blake - a Year of Drawings by : Claudia Zeff
Download or read book Quentin Blake - a Year of Drawings written by Claudia Zeff and published by . This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In recent years I have found myself working increasingly in sequences of drawings which explore subjects and techniques which interest me. These sequences vary in approach and tone, and between reality and fantasy. But I hope that in each of them in its own way will appeal to anyone who like looking at drawings.' Quentin Blake 2019 Quentin Blake, like many illustrators, works essentially in isolation. In normal times he would make two daily trips to his office across the square from where he lives to see what business there was for him to deal with. But during the lockdowns he had no such distractions and demands made of his time. There was still some commissioned works; he finished two books and he did some work for charities raising funds to deal with the lockdowns. But Quentin had a lot more time to explore his visual interests and go wherever his imagination took him. Some of these series were drawn at 6.00 am while he was still in bed. The medium he used for each series was partly decided by whatever was to hand; pencil, biro or Sennelier oil pastels. Similarly, the size, colour and quality of the paper would be decided by what was available. This book is an edited selection of over 3,000 drawings Quentin produced from March 2020 to February 2021; a portfolio of new personal work, not commissioned and not meant for publication. They provide a unique insight into what happens when a great artist is left to his own devices.
