Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To love or to write? This was the crucial question facing the major women writers oft he last century. The painful struggle between sexual relations and personal fulfillment as creative artists is constantly portrayed and re-enacted in their fiction. This book provides the first close analysis of the central struggle in the lives and writings of Victorian women authors. It demonstrates the inadequacy of attitudes formed by twentieth century sexual libertation for an understanding of feminism in Victorian writing. This study establishes a double tendency in Victorian feminism to favor love but equally to oppose it from a position of 'radical chastity'. This essential book at once articulates crucial feminist issues and also constitutes a majr statement on the sources of female creativity. -- Publisher description

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the global system of detention centers that imprison asylum seekers and conceal persistent human rights violations Remote detention centers confine tens of thousands of refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented immigrants around the world, operating in a legal gray area that hides terrible human rights abuses from the international community. Built to temporarily house eight hundred migrants in transit, the immigrant “reception center” on the Italian island of Lampedusa has held thousands of North African refugees under inhumane conditions for weeks on end. Australia’s use of Christmas Island as a detention center for asylum seekers has enabled successive governments to imprison migrants from Asia and Africa, including the Sudanese human rights activist Abdul Aziz Muhamat, held there for five years. In The Death of Asylum, Alison Mountz traces the global chain of remote sites used by states of the Global North to confine migrants fleeing violence and poverty, using cruel measures that, if unchecked, will lead to the death of asylum as an ethical ideal. Through unprecedented access to offshore detention centers and immigrant-processing facilities, Mountz illustrates how authorities in the United States, the European Union, and Australia have created a new and shadowy geopolitical formation allowing them to externalize their borders to distant islands where harsh treatment and deadly force deprive migrants of basic human rights. Mountz details how states use the geographic inaccessibility of places like Christmas Island, almost a thousand miles off the Australian mainland, to isolate asylum seekers far from the scrutiny of humanitarian NGOs, human rights groups, journalists, and their own citizens. By focusing on borderlands and spaces of transit between regions, The Death of Asylum shows how remote detention centers effectively curtail the basic human right to seek asylum, forcing refugees to take more dangerous risks to escape war, famine, and oppression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Frey's concise and readable history of the Indian Rebellion is an excellent introduction to one of the most important wars of the nineteenth century. The rebellion lasted more than a year and pitted broad sections of north Indian society against the British East India Company. British victory consolidated colonial rule that would only be dislodged by twentieth-century nationalist movements. Frey provides a crystal-clear account of the causes, principal events, and consequences of the rebellion. Equally importantly, he deftly discusses why the rebellion remains controversial. Well-chosen documents add texture to the analysis. This is the best short history of the rebellion in print." —Ian Barrow, Middlebury College

Book excerpt: The Turquoise Reference Bible was created in the 1920s and has stood as a superb and well-loved example of classic Cambridge typographic design for ninety years. The text is presented in a large, bold, traditional typeface with cross-references, and the words of Christ are printed in red. The concordance has been freshly typeset for this edition, which also includes a map section and the Translators' Preface - their compelling account of the principles underlying the publication of the KJV in 1611. This Bible is a masterpiece of Cambridge craftsmanship. It is printed on fine India paper and is fully sewn, allowing it to lie flat when in use and adding extra durability. It has art-gilt edges and is bound in goatskin leather with a real leather lining, giving it an extraordinary degree of suppleness. The large format, superior materials and manufacturing excellence make this a perfect family, desk or presentation Bible for Christian ministry.
