Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since DNA has replaced blood as the medium through which we establish kinship, how do we determine with whom we are kin? Who counts among those we care for? The distinction between these categories is constantly in flux. How do we come to decide those we may kiss and those we may kill? Focusing on narratives of kinship as they are defined in contemporary film, literature, and news media, Frances Bartkowski discusses the impact of "stories of origin" on our regard for nonhuman species. She locates the role of "totems and taboos" in forming and re-forming kinship categories-groupings that enable us to tie the personal to the social-and explores the bestiary, among the oldest of literary forms. The bestiary is the realm in which we allegorize the place of humans and other species, a menagerie encompassing animals we know as well as human-animal chimeras and other beings that challenge the "natural" order of the world. Yet advances in reproductive technologies, the mapping of genomes, and the study of primates continually destabilize these categories and recast the dynamic between the natural and the cultural. Bartkowski highlights the arbitrariness of traditional kinship arrangements and asks us to rethink our notions of empathy and ethics. She shows how current dialogues concerning ethics and desire determine contemporary attitudes toward issues of care, and suggests a new framework for negotiating connection and conflict.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believing that “literary icons don't answer letters from ordinary people,” Noreen Olson nonetheless contacted iconic Canadian writer and humourist Paul Hiebert after reading his book Sarah Binks. To her surprise, Hiebert wrote back. Thus began a rich correspondence between two kindred spirits that ended only with Hiebert’s death in 1987. Love and Kisses, Paul Hiebert charts this correspondence, covering a vast array of subjects: from chickens to religion, literature to ageing. Letters reveal Hiebert’s philosophical and spiritual concerns, his wry sense of humour, and his strong belief in love—as well as revealing the rare friendship between Hiebert and Olson. Often amusing and uplifting, it also describes the demands of living on an Alberta farm through Olson’s letters and extracts from her columns that she often included with them. Love and Kisses, Paul Hiebert will appeal to those familiar with Hiebert’s work, those who enjoy insightful and often humorous memoirs, and those who appreciate family and spiritual values. To quote Paul Hiebert, "Only Love Endures."

Margaret Haselden knows how it feels to be alone in the world, which is why she takes in the scrappy stray terrier she finds rummaging through her rubbish bins. Despite her best efforts, the little dog proves more than she can handle, especially when it bites the prized bulldog of the sternly handsome Edward Cherrill, Duke of St. Lawrence. Edward is initially outraged by the incident but is soon captivated by Margaret’s determination to champion the cause of animal welfare. As their paths continue to cross, Edward feels drawn to her warmth and compassion–qualities that starkly contrast with the rigid expectations of his noble title. As their bond deepens, Edward faces a profound dilemma: Can he defy the responsibilities of his rank and choose love over duty? Or must he come to heel like so many dukes before him?
