Book excerpt: How do you will a life into order? Adrift in Germany, a pregnant, aimless Argentine and her small circle of friends try and fail to find out. Fall in Heidelberg, and in a student residence a not-student, a woman from Argentina, is busy not figuring out what to do next. She’s pregnant. Shanice, a Japanese student she had barely befriended, has died. Shanice’s mother has arrived from Tokyo and will not leave. And Javier Miguel, a fellow Argentine, is frantic that his sister back home might be overly involved with a local psychic. The German Room is a novel of not-moving on, of not-growing up, of not-failing better. As fall turns to winter, things change but nothing is different, and comedy and tragedy are harder to tell apart. And in Carla Maliandi’s hands, entropy becomes a vibrant, life-affirming creative force.

Book Synopsis Turkish German Muslims and Comedy Entertainment by : Benjamin Nickl
Download or read book Turkish German Muslims and Comedy Entertainment written by Benjamin Nickl and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkish German comedy culture and the lived realities of Turkish Muslims in Germany Comedy entertainment is a powerful arena for serious public engagement with questions of German national identity and Turkish German migration. The German majority society and its largest labour migrant community have been asking for decades what it means to be German and what it means for Turkish Germans, Muslims of the second and third generations, to call Germany their home. Benjamin Nickl examines through the social pragmatics of humour the dynamics that underpin these questions in the still-evolving popular culture space of German mainstream humour in the 21st century. The first book-length study on the topic to combine close readings of film, television, literary and online comedy, and transnational culture studies, Turkish German Muslims and Comedy Entertainment presents the argument that Turkish German humour has moved from margin to mainstream by intervening in cultural incompatibility and Islamophobia discourse. Ebook available in Open Access. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).

Book Synopsis Kiss Me Again, Paris by : Renate Stendhal
Download or read book Kiss Me Again, Paris written by Renate Stendhal and published by If SF Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. LGBTQIA Studies. Memoir. From Paris's famous opera house to its gossip-rich salons, KISS ME AGAIN, PARIS celebrates youth at the end of the 1970s, when women were in fashion and every woman, gay or straight, fell in love with women. Author Renate Stendhal ekes out a living as a cultural journalist in Europe's most cultured city. She walks Paris at night dressed as a boy, has friends and lovers among artists and writers, and falls under the spell of the mercurial actress Claude, who has all of Paris talking. At the same time, she finds herself in the crosshairs of an alluring stranger who seems to appear everywhere and nowhere at once. There are mysteries with and without clues. Is sexual obsession a way to avoid the risk of love? Filled with sensuality, style, romance, and suspense, Stendhal plays with the concept of memoir as a genre and transports the reader to another time and place. No matter what age, you'll be young and in love again when you reach the last page. "Renate Stendhal's daring new book throbs with the pulse of Paris in the 1970s. Written with verve, this book captures the sense of erotic excitement that Paris continues to inspire."--Marilyn Yalom, author of How the French Invented Love and The Social Sex "Most memories fade to smoldering embers. Renate Stendhal's recollections have remained a bonfire. The tapestry of her remembrances had their genesis in her rejection of a former life and the embrace of a new authentic one. Details of her years living in Paris during the '70s are carved into her psyche. She takes us with her to the cafes where the fragrance of a passing woman would turn heads. We hear the murmur of the Seine. We see the dark shadows under a bridge and the glow of a cigarette as a rouged mouth draws on it. There

Book Synopsis Modern Dance in Germany and the United States by : Isa Partsch-Bergsohn
Download or read book Modern Dance in Germany and the United States written by Isa Partsch-Bergsohn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1995. In Modern Dance in Germany and the United States: Crosscurrents and Influences Isa PartschBergsohn discusses the phenomenon of the modem dance movement between 1902 and 1986 in an international context, focussing on its beginnings in Europe and its philosophy as formulated by the pioneers Dalcroze, Laban, Wigman and Jooss. The author traces the effects the Third Reich had on these artists, and shows the influence these key choreographers had on the developing American modem dance movement through the postwar years, concentrating in particular on Kurt Jooss and his Tanztheater. When America took the lead in modem dance innovation during the sixties, artists such as Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Paul Taylor, Alvin Ailey and Alwin Nikolais overwhelmed European audiences. Subsequently, the artists of the New German Tanztheater revitalized German theatre traditions by blending new content with some of the American contemporary dance techniques. Although the history of modem dance in these two countries is closely linked, the author describes how each country has kept its own unique and distinctive style.
