Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the annotated edition including the rare biographical essay by Edwin E. Slosson called "H. G. Wells - A Major Prophet Of His Time". In "Kipps" Mr. Wells emphasizes an unfamiliar phase of his many-sided talent. Unlike the majority of his fiction, dealing with unknown worlds and with futurity, "Kipps" is a story of the present moment and living people. Its scene is England—Folkestone and nearby towns of the south coast mainly, and London for a few chapters —and its characters all move in that social world that is constantly struggling for a position beyond and above it. Kipps' himself emerges in Mr. Wells's first chapter as a mere boy on his way to a strange home, with his uncle and aunt. He passes through several evolutionary stages from poverty to affluence, and from affluence through a despondent moment of failure and despair to the competency and comfort of a secure position in the world to which he belongs by birth and breeding. His career is portrayed by Mr. Wells with extraordinary vigor, truth, and humor. It scarcely exceeds rashness to say that not since "David Copperfield" has English literature been enriched with so remarkable a story of the growth of a boy through youth into manhood.

Book excerpt: Kipps is the story of Arthur “Artie” Kipps, an illegitimate orphan raised by his aunt and uncle on the southern coast of England in the town of New Romney. Kipps falls in love with neighbor friend Ann Pornick but soon loses touch with her as he begins an apprenticeship at a drapery establishment in the port town of Folkestone. After a drunken evening with his new friend Chitterlow, an aspiring playwright, Kipps discovers he is to inherit a house and sizable income from his grandfather. Kipps then struggles to understand what his new-found wealth means in terms of his place in society and his love life. While today H. G. Wells is best known for his “scientific romances” such as The Time Machine and The Island of Doctor Moreau, Wells considered Kipps his favorite work. Wells worked closely with (some say pestered) his publisher Macmillan to employ creative promotional schemes, and thanks to a cheap edition sales blossomed to over 200,000 during the first two decades of publication. It was during this period that his prior futuristic works became more available and popular with American audiences. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Kipps”, also known as “The Remarkable Mr. Kipps”, is a novel by H. G. Wells. It marks a turning point for the author, moving away from the futuristic science fiction for which he is famed and onto more down-to-earth accounts of twentieth-century British society. Within it, Wells clearly draws from his own knowledge of Britain's social structure to present an interesting autobiographical tale. Contents include: “The Little Shop at New Romney”, “The Emporium”, “The Woodcarving Class”, “Chitterlow”, “'Swapped!'”, “The Unexpected”, “The Walshinghams”, “Engaged”, “The Bicycle Manufacturer”, “The Pupil Lover”, “Discords”, “London”, “Kipps Enters Society”, “The Labyrinthodon”, et cetera. Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as “The Time Machine” (1895), “The Invisible Man” (1897), and “The War of the Worlds” (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
