Book excerpt: During Black History Month, even in the church, we discuss our secular history, and can only go as far back as our history of slavery... and there we get stuck. We cannot seem to shake the fact that our ancestors were slaves, even though we elected a Black president. It finally occurred to me what was missing. Our true history was not being told. As people of faith, we really need to go to the Bible, back to the beginning, in search of our ancestry. This guide is a companion study to the book "Kings Build Things" that traces our royal history throughout Scripture, and the legacy they left for us to emulate and pass on. This 13-week Sunday school curriculum / study guide was written as a means to systematically study, and then pass on the knowledge of our amazing royal ancestry. This adult study guide is one of a series of four books based on the book "Kings Build Things: Discover Your Royal Heritage" by Dr. Cecilia B. Dennery: #1 of 4: Kings Build Empires: Key to Building A Future #2 of 4: Kings Build Things That Last: Key to Leaving a Legacy #3 of 4: Building With a Royal Mind-Set: Key to Greatness #4 of 4: Legacy of the Kings: Key to Building Character

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidisciplinary environmental history of early China's political systems, featuring newly available Chinese archaeological data This book is a multidisciplinary study of the ecology of China's early political systems up to the fall of the first empire in 207 BCE. Brian Lander traces the formation of lowland North China's agricultural systems and the transformation of its plains from diverse forestland and steppes to farmland. He argues that the growth of states in ancient China, and elsewhere, was based on their ability to exploit the labor and resources of those who harnessed photosynthetic energy from domesticated plants and animals. Focusing on the state of Qin, Lander amalgamates abundant new scientific, archaeological, and excavated documentary sources to argue that the human domination of the central Yellow River region, and the rest of the planet, was made possible by the development of complex political structures that managed and expanded agroecosystems.

Download or read book Of Body and Brush written by Angela Zito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qianlong emperor, who dominated the religious and political life of eighteenth-century China, was in turn dominated by elaborate ritual prescriptions. These texts determined what he wore and ate, how he moved, and above all how he performed the yearly Grand Sacrifices. In Of Body and Brush, Angela Zito offers a stunningly original analysis of the way ritualizing power was produced jointly by the throne and the official literati who dictated these prescriptions. Forging a critical cultural historical method that challenges traditional categories of Chinese studies, Zito shows for the first time that in their performance, the ritual texts embodied, literally, the metaphysics upon which imperial power rested. By combining rule through the brush (the production of ritual texts) with rule through the body (mandated performance), the throne both exhibited its power and attempted to control resistance to it. Bridging Chinese history, anthropology, religion, and performance and cultural studies, Zito brings an important new perspective to the human sciences in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of life? The question has been asked by the brightest philosophical minds for centuries. Still to this day answers vary greatly depending on the worldview. Solomon, the wisest king in Israel's history, set all his energies to search for the ultimate meaning of life under the sun. His conclusions may shock and surprise you--vanity, chasing after the wind, absurdity, vanishing smoke. Are these the musings of a genius or of a mad man? If you are looking for a candy-coated appraisal of life then go ahead and put this book down. However, if you are looking for a no-frills, brutally honest, ragged-edged assessment of reality, then you have discovered an indispensable volume. In Journal of a Mad Man, pastor and author Derrick McCarson will carefully guide readers verse by verse through Solomon's meditations recorded in the Old Testament book of wisdom--Ecclesiastes. Not only will readers attempt to plumb the depths of some of mankind's most vexing questions, but they will also discover Solomon's secrets for wise living in a warped world.
