Book excerpt: Where have all the disciples gone? There is a missing force in Christianity today. It’s a critical one, and its absence has led to weak believers, disintegrating families, ineffective churches, and a decaying culture. Without it, we lack what we need to fully live as heaven’s representatives on earth. That missing force is discipleship. In Kingdom Disciples, Tony Evans outlines a simple, actionable definition of discipleship to help the church fulfill its calling. Readers will learn: What a disciple is What a disciple cares about How to be a disciple and make disciples What discipleship looks like in community What the impact of discipleship on the world can be Kingdom disciples are in short supply, and the result is a legion of powerless Christians attending powerless churches, having a powerless presence in the world. The power, authority, abundance, victory, and impact God has promised will only come about when we understand and align ourselves with His definition of discipleship. Kingdom Disciples calls believers and churches back to our primary, divinely ordained responsibility to be disciples and make disciples. Only when we take seriously this assignment will the world see heaven at work on earth. Will you accept the assignment? Kingdom Disciples isuseful as base material for a course on discipleship.

Book excerpt: DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. The first study in the program is DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a thirty-four week overview of the entire Bible. Commitment and Time Involved Three and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation for weekly group meetings. Attendance at weekly 2.5 hour meetings. Study Manual Each member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study manual also includes suggestions for individual and study-related activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture, for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for notes during the weekly group session. The titles of the sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. The principal Scripture for each session follows the chronological movement of the biblical story. We recommend the New Interpreters Study Bible More Questions? Visit www.cokesbury.com/disciple.

Jesus made it clear to all who want to follow Him that they must follow Him on HIS terms alone or they will never make it to the end. Being a disciple of Jesus is the ONLY way to become all that we were intended to be. We who were saved from the world are on the way to becoming fully formed into the image of Christ. This is God's plan; and Kingdom Discipleship is the means to that end. For individual or group study, Kingdom Discipleship is a study guide intended to lead Christians into a deeper walk of abiding with God. This study concentrates on the teachings Jesus intended His disciples to follow to transform them into becoming like Him in word and deed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a course of seven Bible studies. They address matters such as What is God’s Kingdom? What is God’s plan for man? What is christianity really about? The studies came from an extended examination of what Jesus taught, as recorded in the four Gospels, and what the prophets and apostles had to say. It was presented originally as an inter-church Lent course. The studies give an alternative approach to christianity, having in mind christians who want to delve more thoughtfully into their faith. It also addresses the 35% of western populations who may consider themselves christians but do not go to a church, and the churches to which they do not go. The studies promote a relationship with God and a living out of our faith.

Book excerpt: A Kingdom Disciple is, quite simply, a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. The phrase, Kingdom Discipleship, is my shorthand way of communicating what it means to live faithfully as his follower, under his Lordship, and in his Kingdom. This distinctive is not really mine. It's neither innovative nor original. However, my goal in emphasizing Kingdom Discipleship is to help Christians understand more fully what God has revealed in and through his Word. By using the phrase, Kingdom Discipleship, I wish to remind disciples of Jesus Christ that our call is to faithfully and obediently follow Christ in every sphere of life. I believe this is imperative because Jesus Christ is Lord over every sphere of life. It was God who granted Jesus authority over all heaven and earth (Matt. 28:18) and gave him the name above every name (Phil. 2:9). It would, therefore, run counter to the biblical witness regarding our Lord's authority, for his followers to live compartmentalized lives. Therefore, our call as his followers is to intentionally, faithfully, obediently, and joyfully extend his Kingdom - his rule, reign, will, and influence - into every sphere of our lives (in every area of responsibility, interest, relationship, and authority). Everything, what some might call the common and the uncommon, the sacred and the secular, is to be lived for God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31) and according to his will. My prayer is for this book, along with the accompanying in-depth Bible studies, to help educate, equip, and encourage disciples of Jesus Christ to extend his Kingdom into every sphere of their lives, for God's glory and for the common good of our world. This study is ideal for personal use, small groups, and larger Bible studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus commanded his disciples to make disciples. His teaching was focused on the kingdom of God, God's rule and reign. Jesus introduced this kingdom with his first inhale, and he exhaled, "It is finished" on the cross. He rose from the dead and made clear to his followers that a new day had dawned. He taught his disciples for 40 days about the kingdom before he ascended into heaven, and he promised them, "I will return." We take Jesus' instruction, "Make disciples", seriously. The first volume in this three part series, "Being a Disciple," is an exploration of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. John, Jesus' best friend, presented his process of moving a new follower to maturity in 1 John 2:12-14. This book uses John's model to understand how we, as disciples, grow in our relationship with God.

This survey of the testament looks at how the early church took ownership of and was shaped by the story of Jesus and how the church learned how to develop as disciples and create communities of faith. Participants find a deeper conversation with the writers of the New Testament and a renewal of our commitment to be shaped — personally and communally — by the story of Jesus. The study is accessible for adults with little prior Bible experience. In the weekly video segments, listen as scholars fascinate you with facts and information that opens new understanding and enlightenment for your group. In the second video, sit in on a table conversation between guest scholars and debate key issues in the text. Participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the New Testament as an integral part of the Christian Bible and a renewed discovery of our identity in God and God's vision for all things. This eight-week study includes a participant book outlining daily reading assignments for group preparations, a leader guide suggesting discussion activities for use in the 60–90-minute weekly meeting, and a video component providing interpretation and context for the biblical texts.
