Book excerpt: "George's ear is precise, rueful, sanative. His images amaze, yet through each poem journeys a voice we always want to know better, capable even in the tightest situations of the sort of thought you wish you'd had." – Vidyan Ravinthiran"The poems of Karaoke King are nothing less than transcendent. No tricksy stuff here. Just lucidity and formal grace: the words and the music. Their ability to move us to tears, to laughter, or contemplation of the mess we make of the world, and its extraordinary capacity for forgiveness, offering fresh opportunities for redemption." – London Grip"Bravo Dai George, Karaoke King is my poetry book of the year so far." – Caroline BrackenThis confident second collection addresses the contentious nature of the time. Always deeply thoughtful but also alternately ebullient, angry, curious, ashamed, the poet moves through urban and digital spaces feeling both uneasy and exhilarated. There is a sense of history shifting, as a younger generation confronts its ethical obligations, its sense of complicity and disappointment. Karaoke King also contains numerous reflections on popular culture, culminating in 'A History of Jamaican Music', a sequence speaking to urgent contemporary questions of ownership and privilege, pain and celebration.

Book excerpt: This diverse and practical resource presents activities, games and ideas to support children who have speech sound difficulties between the age of 3 - 7 (older if used with children with a learning difficulty), eg developmental delay, disordered speech sounds, developmental apraxia of speech. The book is divided into seven main sections: mouth exercises (oro-motor exercises); single sounds (k); short words - consonant + vowel, eg, car, key, cow; longer words that begin with the speech sound k - consonant + vowel + consonant, eg, comb, can, cap; longer words that end with k, eg, book, bike, duck; words with more than one syllable that begin with k, eg, cooker, coffee, camel, caterpillar; and, using words in sentences. Each section provides the opportunity for the child to hear the speech sound in isolation and in words before they try to say it (ie receptive and expressive activities). Includes: different activities to practise listening and saying the target sound/word; drilling games - ie the opportunity to hear the speech sound in isolation and in words, and to say them in increasingly challenging sequences in a game format; games that can be played with the picture cards of the words the child is working on; and, an auditory bombardment section composed of funny rhymes containing the words, the child has been working on in the section. The resource contains simple, accessible information on the development of speech sounds and specific information about the speech sound k. Examples of session plans using the resource are included in the book to help users plan work.

When he wins a local karaoke contest, he discovers not only a newfound confidence, but the courage to take risks. With the victor's medallion in hand, he seizes the moment--and his life changes dramatically, albeit not as he might have hoped. From a weekend romp with Megumi, a former hooker, comes a physical beating and the loss of his beloved medallion. Stung by this humiliation, and yet able to muster a courage long dormant, his quest begins. From the western states and on to Asia, with a return trip in a shipping container, we follow his wild ride. Will a Korean barmaid be his downfall--or his redemption? Will Billy, a closeted gay man, or Milt, a heavily-armed dwarf, help Guy on his journey? And what about the patricidal Chinese businessman who will stop at nothing to create a global karaoke empire?"--Amazon.com, viewed May 17, 2011.

With contemporary news paper cuttings of events and the people that helped shape the city of Manchester. I hope you enjoy the tale of two cities as much as I have in compiling it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jena Nardella, cofounder of Blood:Water and one of Christianity Today’s 33 Under 33, shares a “captivatingly honest” (Publishers Weekly) account of how her passion for saving the world grew into a humbler, long-term calling of loving the world in all its brokenness in this beautifully written memoir. Ten years ago, Jena Lee Nardella was a fresh-out-of-college, twenty-something with the lofty goal of truly changing the world. Armed with a diploma, a thousand dollars, and a dream to build one thousand wells in Africa, she joined forces with Grammy Award–winning band Jars of Clay to found Blood:Water and begin her mission. Jena’s dream for her nonprofit turned that initial $1 into $20, and then $100, and today into more than $25 million. Working throughout eleven countries in Africa, Blood:Water has provided healthcare for over 62,000 people in HIV-affected areas and has partnered with communities to provide clean water for more than one million people in Africa. But along the way she faced many harsh realities that have tested her faith, encountered corruption and brokenness that nearly destroyed everything she’d fought for, and learned that wishful thinking will not get you very far. Jena discovered true change comes only when you stop trying to save the world and allow yourself to love it, even when it breaks your heart. With a fresh, intelligent, and winsome voice, Jena Lee Nardella weaves an evocative, personal narrative filled with honest and hard-won lessons that demonstrate the amazing things that can happen when you fight for your dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When itinerant singers from China’s countryside become iconic artists, worlds collide. The lives and performances of these representative singers become sites for conversations between the rural and urban, local and national, folk and elite, and traditional and modern. In Song King: Connecting People, Places, and Past in Contemporary China, Levi S. Gibbs examines the life and performances of “Folksong King of Western China” Wang Xiangrong (b. 1952) and explores how itinerant performers come to serve as representative symbols straddling different groups, connecting diverse audiences, and shifting between amorphous, place-based local, regional, and national identities. Moving from place to place, these border walkers embody connections between a range of localities, presenting audiences with traditional, modern, rural, and urban identities among which to continually reposition themselves in an evolving world. Born in a small mountain village near the intersection of the Great Wall and the Yellow River in a border region with a rich history of migration, Wang Xiangrong was exposed to a wide range of songs as a child. The songs of Wang’s youth prepared him to create a repertoire of region-representing pieces and mediate between regions, nations, and multinational corporations in national and international performances. During the course of a career that included meeting Deng Xiaoping in 1980 and running with the Olympic torch in 2008, Wang’s life, songs, and performances have come to highlight various facets of social identity in contemporary China. Drawing on extensive fieldwork with Wang and other professional folksingers from northern Shaanxi province at weddings, Chinese New Year galas, business openings, and Christmas concerts, Song King argues that songs act as public conversations people can join in on. As song kings and queens fuse personal and collective narratives in performances of iconic songs, they provide audiences with compelling models for socializing personal experience, negotiating a sense of self and group in an ever-changing world.
