Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the characters bequeathed to us by the Hebrew Bible, none is more compelling or complex than David. Divinely blessed, musically gifted, brave, and eloquent, David's famous slaying of Goliath also confirms that he is a redoubtable man of war. Yet, when his son Absalom rebels, David is dogged by the accusation than he will lose his kingdom because he is not merely a man of war, but a man of 'bloods' - guilty of shedding innocent blood. In this book, for the first time, this language of 'innocent blood' and 'bloodguilt' is traced throughout David's story in the books of Samuel and 1 Kings. The theme emerges initially in Saul's pursuit of David and resurfaces regularly as David rises and men like Nabal, Saul, Ishbosheth, and Abner fall. Innocent blood and bloodguilt also turn out to be central to David's reign. This is seen in a surprising way in David's killing of Uriah, but also in the subsequent deaths of his sons, Amnon and Absalom, his general, Amasa, and even in David's encounters with Shimei. The problem rears its head again when the innocent blood of the Gibeonites shed by Saul comes back to haunt David's kingdom. Finally, the problem reappears when Solomon succeeds David and orchestrates the executions of Joab and Shimei, and the exile of Abiathar. Attending carefully to the text and drawing extensively on previous biblical scholarship, David J. Shepherd suggests that innocent blood is not only a pre-eminent concern of David, and his story in Samuel and 1 Kings, but also shapes the entirety of David's history.

Book excerpt: According to the Hebrew Bible, David rose from humble beginnings as a sheepherder in the hills of Bethlehem to become the ruler of the ancient kingdom of Israel and the founder of an empire that included not only the modern state of Israel, but parts of Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan as well. Courageous and conniving, pious and vengeful, warrior, poet, fugitive, and king, David is not only one of the most complex and fascinating figures in Hebrew scripture but also one of the ancient world's best-known leaders. King David uses the ample writings by and about the revered king of Israel to explore his historical significance in world history and how his time in power contributed to modern-day situations in the Middle East.

Book excerpt: WHERE CURRENT EVENTS, HISTORY, AND THE BIBLE COME TOGETHER The Death of Abel is the first murder to occur in the Bible. Why did Cain kill his brother? After centuries of progress, why does the need to kill still exist? With advances in medical science, from vaccines to heart transplants, why can't we solve the most basic destructive human condition known to mankind? We are racing to develop a vaccine to protect the people of the world from the dreaded Covid-19 virus. We will spend whatever it takes to protect the lives of our loved ones while ignoring the most damning disease of all, HATRED! Hate has been around since the beginning. How do we stop it? It may not be as hard as you think. All The Innocent Blood: Shed by Israel shows us what works and what does not. All The Innocent Blood: Shed by America, the sequel, will show us how to defeat this evil. These timeless truths were written for such a time as this. The question is are we the people they were written for? One of the great lessons of the chapter on Sodom and Gomorrah is God prefers forgiveness to judgment. If God preferred forgiveness to judgment, then what went wrong? By knowing what went wrong, perhaps we can avoid history repeating itself, in our lifetime!
