Book excerpt: The kinetics of several free radical-radical reactions was studied using pulsed laser photolysis coupled to transient UV-vis absorption spectroscopy over the 292 – 714 K temperature range and the 1- 100 bar pressure range. Free radicals such as CH3, OH and Cl are generated by photodissociation of parent molecules; some other radicals such as CH3O2 and HO2 are generated in secondary reactions following the initial photodissociation. Different free radicals are monitored at different wavelengths depending on their UV absorption spectra. Quantitative measurements of the concentrations of free radicals relay upon the absolute intensity of photolysis laser light determined by well characterized in situ actinometry. Experimental temporal absorption profiles are fitted by numerical solutions of a system of differential equations (ODE) which correspond to the reaction mechanism.

Book excerpt: This research was directed at the detection, monitoring, and study of the chemical kinetic behavior by infrared absorption spectroscopy of small free radical species thought to be important intermediates in combustion. Work on the reaction of OH with acetaldehyde has been completed and published and work on the reaction of O(1D) with CH4 has been completed and submitted for publication. In the course of our investigation of branching ratios of the reactions of O(1D) with acetaldehyde and methane, we discovered that hot atom chemistry effects are not negligible at the gas pressures (13 Torr) initially used. Branching ratios of the reaction of O(1D) with CH4 have been measured at a tenfold higher He flow and fivefold higher pressure.

Book excerpt: The objective of the current research is to gain new quantitative knowledge of the kinetics and mechanisms of elementary reactions of polyatomic free radicals which are important in hydrocarbon combustion processes. A special facility, consisting of a heatable tubular reactor coupled to a photoionization mass spectrometer, was used to isolate different classes of reactions involving these reactive intermediates for quantitative investigations. Where possible, these experimental studies are coupled with theoretical ones, sometimes in collaboration with others, to obtain an improved understanding of the factors determining reactivity. Much of the attention during this funding period was focused on isolating and quantitatively studying the kinetics of the unimolecular decomposition of hydrocarbon free radicals at elevated temperatures (up to 1,100 K in some cases) and at low pressures where fall-off from the high pressure limit can be significant. To date the authors have studied the unimolecular decomposition of neo-C5H11, C2H5, iso-C3H--, n-C3H--, CH3CO, tert-C4H9, and sec-C4H9.

Polyatomic free radicals are generated in situ by excimer laser photolysis (193 or 248 nm) of suitable radical precursors and the radical decay is monitored in real-time experiments. Many of these studies provide the first direct measurements of the free radical rate constants. Where possible, these experimental studies are coupled with theoretical ones in order to obtain an improved understanding of the factors determining reactivity and to provide a means of extrapolating the rate constants from laboratory conditions to the harsher conditions of combustion environments. One important conclusion of these studies is that tunneling can have a major effect on the shapes of falloff curves at high temperatures.
