Book excerpt: This study investigates the relative influence of various parameters on the kinetic friction coefficient mu sub k between ice and different surfaces. Friction tests were performed with urea-doped, columnar ice, studying the parameters of normal pressure, velocity, type of material, material roughness, ice orientation, ice hardness and test configuration. Tests were conducted by pulling a sample of ice over a sheet of material and by pulling a sample of material over an ice sheet. An ambient temperature of -1.5 + or - 1 deg C was maintained throughout, and the ice surface hardness was measured using a specially designed apparatus. The results of the friction tests revealed that the behavior of mu sub k with varying velocity was significantly influenced by the test configuration and material roughness. The magnitude of the kinetic friction coefficient was also affected by varying normal pressure, surface roughness and ice hardness. Additional guidelines for standardized ice friction tests and future investigations were recommended.

Polarstern off the coast of Labrador. The test surfaces were Inerta-160-coated steel plates and bare steel plates, hand roughened and sandblasted. The main findings of the studies were: 1) columnar and granular sea ice showed no significant differences in friction coefficient; 2) for columnar ice, mu sub k was independent of ice crystal orientation with respect to test surface; 3) mu sub k was independent of normal pressure applied on ice sample; 4) mu sub k initially decreased with increasing relative velocity between the ice sample and the test surface and reached a steady value at higher speeds; 5) mu sub k increased with increasing surface roughness; 6) a wetting surface exhibited a higher friction coefficient than a non-wetting surface of the same or even higher roughness average.

This volume contains contributions from leading scientists on fundamental aspects of sliding friction. Some problems considered are: What is the origin of stick-and-slip motion? What is the origin of the rapid processes taking place within a lub at low sliding velocities? On a metallic surface, is the rication layer electronic or phononic friction the dominating energy dissipation pro cess? What is the role (if any) of self-organized criticality in sliding friction? How thick is the water layer during sliding on ice and snow? These and other questions raised in this book are of course only part ly answered: the topic of sliding friction is still in an early state of development.

Book excerpt: IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.
