Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our knowledge of the mechanism of electrode processes increases, it becomes more and more apparent that the kinetic currents first observed by R. Brdicka and by K. Wiesner in the 1940's are very widely encountered. Very many electrode pro cesses contain a chemical stage. * This is true primarily of elec trode processes that involve organic compounds. Therefore, to understand the mechanism of electrode processes and, particular ly, to correctly interpret the results of polarographic investiga tions, it is important to know the characteristics and relationships controlling the chemical reactions taking place at the electrode surface. Generally, these reactions are substantially different from ordinary chemical reactions taking place in the bulk of the solution, since the reactions at the electrodes are often affected by the electric field of the electrode and the adsorption of the par ticipating compounds . The fact that hydrogen ions usuallY take part in the electro chemical reduction of organic compounds makes possible the use of electrochemical methods, particularly polarography, for the study of protolytic reactions. These reactions play an important role in organic chemistry: the majority of reactions of organic compounds in solutions go through a stage in which a hydrogen ion is removed or added (see, for example, [1, 2]). Therefore, the polarographic study of protolytic reactions can supply much important information to theoretical organic chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Polarography is a revised and extended version of an original Czech edition that appeared in 1962 at the Publishing House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague. Based on a one-term course of lectures for third-year students of chemistry at the Charles University it brings the fundamental results of more than forty years' research in the field of polarography. The book contains 22 chapters and opens with a discussion of the principles of polarography. This is followed by separate chapters on polarizable electrodes used in polarography; charging current; influence of the resistance of the electrolyte on polarographic curves; migration and diffusion-controlled currents; and equation of a reversible polarographic wave. Subsequent chapters deal with reversible processes controlled by diffusion of complex ions; reversible reduction of organic substances; deposition of mercury ions; irreversible electrode processes; applications of limiting currents; polarographic curves for the formation of semiquinones and dimers; and catalytic hydrogen currents.

However in gas-solid chromatography, a considerable quantity of the mobile phase may be adsorbed on the surface of the stationary adsorbent which diminishes the column's effective length and ability to retain solutes. In this respect helium has been found to be preferable to most other gases (GREENE and Roy, 1957) because it is adsorbed to the least extent. 3. Packed columns offer a considerable resistance to flow, which may create a pressure differential between inlet and outlet of sufficient magnitude to cause an unfavorable flow rate through a significant length of the column. A reduced inlet/outlet pressure ratio can be obtained by using light molecular weight gases toward which the column packing shows the greatest permeability. The flow rate of the mobile phase is normally adjusted by altering the column inlet pressure, for which purpose commercial pressure regulators of sufficient accuracy are available. Quantitative measurements of the flow rate can be made by a number of methods, including rotameters, orifice meters, soapfilm flow meters and displacement of water. The former two methods are the most con venient but the least accurate; moreover they create a back pressure and are temperature dependent whereas although the moving soap bubble is cumbersome to employ and unusable for continuous readings, it is preferred when the highest accuracy is required.

Book excerpt: It is now time for a comprehensive treatise to look at the whole field of electrochemistry. The present treatise was conceived in 1974, and the earliest invitations to authors for contributions were made in 1975. The completion of the early volumes has been delayed by various factors. There has been no attempt to make each article emphasize the most recent situation at the expense of an overall statement of the modern view. This treatise is not a collection of articles from Recent Advances in Electrochemistry or Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry. It is an attempt at making a mature statement about the present position in the vast area of what is best looked at as a new interdisciplinary field. Texas A & M University J. O'M. Bockris University of Ottawa B. E. Conway Case Western Reserve University Ernest Yeager Texas A & M University Ralph E. White Preface to Volume 8 Experimental methods in electrochemistry are becoming more diverse. This volume describes many of the new techniques that are being used as well as some of the well-established techniques. It begins with two chapters (1 and 2) on electronic instrumentation and methods for utilization of microcomputers for experimental data acquisition and reduction. Next, two chapters (3 and 4) on classical methods of electrochemical analysis are presented: ion selective electrodes and polarography.

Book excerpt: Practical Polarography: An Introduction for Chemistry Students provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of practical polarography. This book presents the developments in polarography and provides descriptions and procedures that should be readily available for use with any available polarograph. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of polarography that is widely employed in chemical analysis because the current-voltage curves show both the quantitative and qualitative composition of the solution. This text then explains the electrode in polarographic electrolysis, which consists either of a mercury pool at the bottom of the electrolytic cell that contains the solution under test, or of a special type of electrode of known potential. Other chapters consider the polarographic reduction of some metal ions and of some organic substances. The final chapter deals with the tables containing selected data of half-wave potentials measured against a saturated calomel electrode at 20-25°C. This book is a valuable resource for students, technicians, and chemists.

The principles, techniques, and apparatus of organic polarography are discussed, and some selected examples of the applications of organic polarography in various fields of applied chemistry are presented. The direct methods in which the sample is simply dissolved in a suitable supporting electrolyte are also considered. This book consists of 11 chapters and opens with an overview of the basic principles of the polarographic method of analysis, as well as the different types of polarographic limiting currents and of electrode processes. The reader is then introduced to the instruments used in polarography, including the polarograph, dropping and reference electrodes, and electrolysis vessels. Experimental techniques in organic polarography are also described, along with some of its practical applications in fields such as pharmacy, medicine, and biochemistry. Subsequent chapters explore polarographic methods used in the analysis of organic substances, including direct and indirect methods of analysis; separation techniques; and the use of polarography in organic synthesis and isolation of natural products. This monograph is written primarily for organic and analytical chemists.

Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.
