Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boltzmann and Vlasov equations played a great role in the past and still play an important role in modern natural sciences, technique and even philosophy of science. Classical Boltzmann equation derived in 1872 became a cornerstone for the molecular-kinetic theory, the second law of thermodynamics (increasing entropy) and derivation of the basic hydrodynamic equations. After modifications, the fields and numbers of its applications have increased to include diluted gas, radiation, neutral particles transportation, atmosphere optics and nuclear reactor modelling. Vlasov equation was obtained in 1938 and serves as a basis of plasma physics and describes large-scale processes and galaxies in astronomy, star wind theory. This book provides a comprehensive review of both equations and presents both classical and modern applications. In addition, it discusses several open problems of great importance. Reviews the whole field from the beginning to today Includes practical applications Provides classical and modern (semi-analytical) solutions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the basic equations of kinetic theory in all of space. It contains up-to-date, state-of-the-art treatments of initial-value problems for the major kinetic equations, including the Boltzmann equation (from rarefied gas dynamics) and the Vlasov-Poisson/Vlasov-Maxwell systems (from plasma physics). This is the only existing book to treat Boltzmann-type problems and Vlasov-type problems together. Although these equations describe very different phenomena, they share the same streaming term. The author proves that solutions starting from a given configuration at an initial time exist for all future times by imposing appropriate hypotheses on the initial values in several important cases. He emphasizes those questions that a mathematician would ask first: Is there a solution to this problem? Is it unique? Can it be numerically approximated? The topics treated include the study of the Boltzmann collision operator, the study of the initial-value problem for the Boltzmann equation with "small" and "near equilibrium" data, global smooth solvability of the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system with smooth initial data of unrestricted size, conditions under which the initial-value problem for the Vlasov-Maxwell system has global-in-time solutions (in both the smooth and weak senses), and more.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation in a self-contained manner, even for those readers who have no familiarity with special and general relativity. Though an attempt is made to present the basic concepts in a complete fashion, the style of presentation is chosen to be appealing to readers who want to understand how kinetic theory is used for explicit calculations. The book will be helpful not only as a textbook for an advanced course on relativistic kinetic theory but also as a reference for physicists, astrophysicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation.

Book excerpt: This book covers a variety of topics related to kinetic theory in neutral gases and magnetized plasmas, with extensions to other systems such as quantum plasmas and granular flows. A comprehensive presentation is given for the Boltzmann equations and other kinetic equations for a neutral gas, together with the derivations of compressible and incompressible fluid dynamical systems, and their rigorous justification. Several contributions are devoted to collisionless magnetized plasmas. Rigorous results concerning the well-posedness of the Vlasov-Maxwell system are presented. Special interest is devoted to asymptotic regimes where the scales of variation of the electromagnetic field are clearly separated from those associated with the gyromotion of the particles. This volume collects lectures given at the Short Course and Workshop on Kinetic Theory organized at the Fields Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Toronto during the Spring of 2004.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vlasov equation is the master equation which provides a statistical description for the collective behavior of large numbers of charged particles in mutual, long-range interaction. In other words, a low collision (or “Vlasov”) plasma. Plasma physics is itself a relatively young discipline, whose “birth” can be ascribed to the 1920s. The origin of the Vlasov model, however, is even more recent, dating back to the late 1940s. This “young age” is due to the rare occurrence of Vlasov plasma on Earth, despite the fact it characterizes most of the visible matter in the universe. This book – addressed to students, young researchers and to whoever wants a good understanding of Vlasov plasmas – discusses this model with a pedagogical presentation, focusing on the general properties and historical development of the applications of the Vlasov equation. The milestone developments discussed in the first two chapters serve as an introduction to more recent works (characterization of wave propagation and nonlinear properties of the electrostatic limit).

Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the modern theory of differential-operator and kinetic models including Vlasov-Maxwell, Fredholm, Lyapunov-Schmidt branching equations to name a few. This book will bridge the gap in the considerable body of existing academic literature on the analytical methods used in studies of complex behavior of differential-operator equations and kinetic models. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians, physicists and engineers interested in the theory of such non-standard systems.

Book excerpt: The book compiles works presented at a seminar aiming to attract global experts in differential equations, mathematical modeling, and integration methods. It covers classical and contemporary integration techniques for partial differential equations, including Monge and Darboux's approaches and their extensions. Additionally, it introduces a novel theoretical model for plane turbulent flows, presents gravitational equations derived from the principle of least action, and explores symmetry-preserving conservative finite-difference schemes for hydrodynamic-type equations. Analytical solutions for Maxwell's equations in incompressible viscoelastic mediums are examined, alongside theoretical-group analysis of wake mathematical models and reduction to ordinary differential equations. The book also delves into special classes of two-dimensional ideal fluid motion and advancements in discrete orthogonal polynomial theory, showcasing rapid decay properties near interval boundaries. In conclusion, this comprehensive collection is indispensable for researchers and practitioners in applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, and computational modeling, providing valuable insights into cutting-edge methods and solutions in the field.
