Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of the high-pressure liquid-phase microreactor has been completed, and assembly of the reactor system is at least half completed. The analytical techniques available for the analysis of sulfur and nitrogen-containing compounds in multicomponent white oil have been thoroughly reviewed, and a satisfactory analysis scheme has been developed. The scheme is centered around high-temperature gas chromatography with a nitrogen-specific detector for analysis of nitrogen-containing organic compounds and a sulfur-specific detector for sulfur-containing compounds. Samples of deactivated catalyst from the Synthoil pilot plant reactor have been analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe. Catalyst near the front of the reactor is 50 to 70% covered with a crust of ferrous sulfide which appears to be responsible for activity reduction. Smaller amounts of Cu, Si, Al, Zn and Ti were also present. Catalyst samples from near the exit of the reactor are essentially free of ferrous sulfide but have an irregular crust of Si-Al ash which covers 20 to 40% of the surface. A 300-cc autoclave has been purchased and set up for the hydrodenitrogenation studies. A catalyst-oil injection system which allows the catalyst and the nitrogen-containing reactant to be injected into the white oil in the autoclave which is already at reaction conditions has been developed. This avoids the problems associated with the heat-up period. (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus for this book is twofold. First, in response to the well documented oil shocks of the 1970s there arose a resurgence of research activity in the synthetic fuels area. This book attempts to capture some of the leading edge advances which have been made over the past decade in the area of the chemistry of coal conversion. The second driving force behind this book is to jog people's memories about the fundamental truths of the energy industry, i. e. , there IS a finite amount of liquid hydrocarbons on and under the earth's surface, most of the easy to find, produce, and use liquid hydrocarbons have been exploited, and the real need continues to be for liquid hydrocarbons for use as trans portation fuels. The uncertainty is not if synthetic liquids will be needed, but rat her when they will be needed. The inability to answer that question accurately caused many of the financial and research disruptions following the double shocks of the 1970s. Since future projections can only be based upon the historical record, they cannot anticipate major disruptions such as, e. g. , discovery of huge easily producible oils fields, or, on the other side, global or regional economic disruptions such as warfare. With this level of uncertainty, then, the second impetus is to point out how much research remains to be done at a time when fiscal support for fossil fuels research in the Uni ted States is rapidly spiraling downward.

This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concentration of hydroaromatics in a coal liquefaction solvent is regarded as a significant factor in the determination of solvent quality. An analytical method is described based on catalytic solvent dehydrogenation (CSD) for the measurement of transferable hydrogen, including hydroaromatic sources, in a solvent. The dehydrogenation of several model compounds in the presence of Pd/CaCO3 was conducted under batch conditions. Hydroaromatics containing six-member rings were found to dehydrogenate effectively. Lesser degrees of dehydrogenation were found for alkyl-substituted aromatics and saturated compounds. CSD was applied to a series of hydrogenated creosote oils plus several light recycle oils. The normalized H2 volumes obtained by CSD could be correlated with the coal-dissolution ability of the creosote oils. It was not possible to include the light recycle oils in the same correlation. 13C-NMR was used to measure the transferable hydrogen of selected hydrogenated creosote oils and light recycle oils. Values of transferable hydrogen determined by 13C-NMR were generally larger than the corresponding values obtained by CSD. A smooth correlation was found between coal conversion and transferable hydrogen as measured by 13C-NMR. The light recycle oils could not be fitted to the curve defined by the creosote oils. Minerals indigenous to coal provide an internal but weak source of catalytic activity during liquefaction reactions. A sensitive probe reaction, cyclohexene hydrogenation/isomerization, was used to compare the catalytic activity of several clay minerals, oxides used as catalyst supports, pyrite and liquefaction residue ashes.
