Bei einer Kindeswohlgefährdung sollte man so früh wie möglich handeln, um größere Schäden zu vermeiden. Im Verlauf der schriftlichen Arbeit werden zunächst verschiedene Begriffe, wie Gewalt, Kindeswohl und Kindeswohlgefährdung, definiert. Es wird auf die Kindesmisshandlung, deren Formen und den Begriff häusliche Gewalt eingegangen. Zusätzlich zum Begriff der häuslichen Gewalt werden die Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren und die Auswirkungen von häuslicher Gewalt erläutert. Des Weiteren geht es in der Arbeit um die rechtlichen Grundlagen zum Kinderschutz. Hier werden verschiedene Gesetze und Regelungen erklärt.
