Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grab your red hat and SPF50, your going to Hawaii. As the Beach Boys sing "Let's go surfing now, everybody's learning how..." come on this romantic adventure with me. Like a good mai tai, this story is one part romance, one part Maui travel guide, with surfing lessons thrown in for good measure. In LARGE PRINT for easy reading. This is the poignant story of three generations of surfers who live in a little yellow house above Cove Park in Kihei, Maui. When the patriarch dies as a result of an ocean rescue at Jaws, it sets the stage for a chance encounter with an old friend. A lucky coincidence brings the two old friends together and a chance to correct an error from the past. How many people get a chance for a do–over in their lives? Can Frannie and Davey find happiness and a new life together here on this island, one of a kind? Will the residences of the little yellow houses be able to save their restaurant–bar and the family home? Or will they, too, fall victim to the consequences of the tourists actions that day at Jaws? Will Irene be able to find love again with the help of her family, neighbors, and her friends from the Red Hat Society? "Rose Tigarden's LIFE'S A BEACH ON MAUI is a richly detailed introduction to Hawaii for those who have never been there, a beautiful trip back for those who have, but above all a romance and family story told with the simple immediacy of folk art in words and full of the sweetness but also the sadness and even the danger of life lived far from 'da mainland'" – Michael Eric Stein, journalist for MAUI NO KA OI Magazine, essayist and novelist.

She's lived a sheltered life in Seattle and has always done what's expected of her. She has a decent job, a boyfriend who is marriage material, and a photography hobby that ignites her soul. She thought passion was only something she felt while looking through her camera lens until she took a trip to Hawaii and fell in love with the magic of the land and a man who embodied its rugged spirit. Lou has always strived to be perfect, but Keoni makes her want to quit trying so hard and try easy instead.

Book excerpt: Kimo and Kalini: A Hawaiian Mouse Tail was inspired by a few things, including actual events. At around age nine, Jimbos younger daughter was an avid reader of the Poppy series of books about mice, written by the acclaimed author, Avi. While on vacation on Oahu, Hawaii, he spotted two little mice running around on the lava rock below the concrete barrier at the Halona Blowhole, which is not far from KokoHead and Marina Bay. The Halona Blowhole is also right next to a small beach known to locals as Cockroach Bay. One mouse was light brown in color, and the other was darker gray or brown. The idea of these two characters stayed in Jimbo's head until March of 2016. The rest of the story came to him after rescuing his older daughter's charm from a hotel drainpipe (without calling maintenance) while on a ski vacation with his girls. Please, enjoy reading with your children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surfing has been a significant sport and cultural practice in Hawai‘i for more than 1,500 years. In the last century, facing increased marginalization on land, many Native Hawaiians have found refuge, autonomy, and identity in the waves. In Waves of Resistance Isaiah Walker argues that throughout the twentieth century Hawaiian surfers have successfully resisted colonial encroachment in the po‘ina nalu (surf zone). The struggle against foreign domination of the waves goes back to the early 1900s, shortly after the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, when proponents of this political seizure helped establish the Outrigger Canoe Club—a haoles (whites)-only surfing organization in Waikiki. A group of Hawaiian surfers, led by Duke Kahanamoku, united under Hui Nalu to compete openly against their Outrigger rivals and established their authority in the surf. Drawing from Hawaiian language newspapers and oral history interviews, Walker’s history of the struggle for the po‘ina nalu revises previous surf history accounts and unveils the relationship between surfing and colonialism in Hawai‘i. This work begins with a brief look at surfing in ancient Hawai‘i before moving on to chapters detailing Hui Nalu and other Waikiki surfers of the early twentieth century (including Prince Jonah Kuhio), the 1960s radical antidevelopment group Save Our Surf, professional Hawaiian surfers like Eddie Aikau, whose success helped inspire a newfound pride in Hawaiian cultural identity, and finally the North Shore’s Hui O He‘e Nalu, formed in 1976 in response to the burgeoning professional surfing industry that threatened to exclude local surfers from their own beaches. Walker also examines how Hawaiian surfers have been empowered by their defiance of haole ideas of how Hawaiian males should behave. For example, Hui Nalu surfers successfully combated annexationists, married white women, ran lucrative businesses, and dictated what non-Hawaiians could and could not do in their surf—even as the popular, tourist-driven media portrayed Hawaiian men as harmless and effeminate. Decades later, the media were labeling Hawaiian surfers as violent extremists who terrorized haole surfers on the North Shore. Yet Hawaiians contested, rewrote, or creatively negotiated with these stereotypes in the waves. The po‘ina nalu became a place where resistance proved historically meaningful and where colonial hierarchies and categories could be transposed. 25 illus.

Book excerpt: SURF AT DAWN, MURDER AT MIDNIGHT… THREE HAWAII POLICE PROCEDURALS This gripping, action-packed box set introduces intrepid, handsome police detective Kimo Kanapa’aka. Kimo wants nothing more than to protect and serve his beloved, lush Honolulu--and he’s just nabbed his dream job as a detective on the police department’s homicide squad. He handles treacherous drug busts, goes undercover to discover who's killing surfers on Oahu's North Shore, and battles a dangerous bomber. So... life should be perfect, right? But, as the series begins, Kimo has a secret that’s about to burst into the open: he’s a closeted gay man. Author Plakcy carefully weaves Kimo’s personal journey into a smoldering police procedural thriller, striking a rare balance of hard-boiled and soft-hearted. Mahu At 32, Kimo Kanapa'aka is now a detective on the Honolulu Police Department's homicide squad, based at the Waikīkī station. But when he sees someone leave a dead body in an alley, he’s forced into a decision that could damage his career—either admit he was at a gay bar, or report it anonymously. He may have made the wrong decision, but there’s still no stopping him: he follows the trail from the seamy underside of Chinatown to the elegance of million-dollar homes in Maunalani Heights. This twisty debut is a fast-paced adventure from start to finish. Mahu Surfer Author Plakcy’s second installment in the Mahu Investigations series forces Kimo Kanapa'aka to surf seriously again. A serial killer is on the loose, and three people have died. Kimo’s new boss asks the former competitive surfer to go undercover on Oahu's North Shore to find the killer. Kimo’s journey back to his old stomping grounds is not a day at the beach: he notices a variety of issues, from crystal meth abuse to sky-rocketing rents. Plus, Kimo re-unites with an old friend who reveals more of this secretive cop’s past... Mahu Fire Kimo’s back in Honolulu--and he’s now the town’s only openly gay homicide detective. But it’s going well, at first: he’s growing comfortable with his status as an advocate. He’s even mentoring a group of gay teens. Things change when Kimo and his loved ones attend a swanky charity event in support of gay marriage. In the middle of the shindig, a bomb detonates. Kimo’s on the case: he’s determined to track down whoever’s hateful enough to massacre gay people and allies. But it's possible that his own high profile will stand in the way of this thrilling investigation, called "a sharp whodunit" by Publishers Weekly.
