And yet, strangely, it all stayed the same, too. I still worked for a secret metaphysical branch of the FBI. Although, thanks to being thrown around like a rag doll on my last case, I was currently on medical leave. A small mercy given how much personal baggage I had to unload at the moment. The fallout from the last case didn't stop at bodily injury. It went much further than that, cracking the foundation of my life and my career in one fell swoop. Supernatural serial killers are a pain in the ass like that. I just want to rest and pretend I'm not psychic, but when a team of serial killers hits my hometown, I have to step in. No, really. It has to be me. No one else knows about the vampires and fey fighting a shadow war right under everyone's noses, and it turns out these serial killers might be involved in the latest supernatural scuffle. On top of that, I've got boyfriend troubles, I'm bonded to the world's most annoying vampire, and my DNA is suddenly a hot commodity among vampires--as in, everyone wants a piece of me...the Immortal Kin. She always gets the bad guy—until she’s assigned a Dracula copycat case that bites back. The killer drags her into a mysterious underworld where, not every serial killer is human, not every case can be solved, and not everyone can survive. Standalone novel. No cliffhanger. What readers say about Rare Stakes: "Her writing style is unique and fast paced. Very easy to get lost in the world." "I was drawn into the characters, and I couldn't help but like them. I really liked that the heroine wasn't too stupid to live! A nice bit of world building." EXCERPT The most innocent things could hold more darkness than I ever wanted to see. Today's example: Takeout. What could be so terrible about takeout? Normally, it was awesome. I lived on the stuff. I read the menus like the bible. But this wasn't that kind of takeout. I stared at the Styrofoam containers on the table. My stomach was already cringing, looking for a place to hide. The containers gleamed virgin white under the fluorescent lights of the FBI conference room, but their contents were not quite so pure. Each carton had a handwritten label on top. One read, Marion—bright and charming. Another read Stacey—good body. The last, Eileen—agreeable. The writing was large with strong vertical strokes and half-closed loops. I wondered what a handwriting analyst would make of it. Was there a particular flourish that indicated someone was a cannibal?

Book excerpt: The media has nicknames for Marnie Baranuik, though she'd rather they didn't; twice-Touched by the Blue Sense, a rare dual-talented psychic with a doctorate in preternatural biology and a working knowledge of the dark arts, she was considered without peer in the psychic community. Her first big FBI case ended with a bullet in one shoulder and a chip on the other, a queasy heart and a serial killer in the wind, leaving her a public flop and a private wreck. When the FBI's preternatural crimes unit tracks her down at her remote mountain lodge in Ten Springs, Colorado for her insight on a local case, she isn't particularly eager to stick her neck out again, but her quiet retirement is promptly besieged by a stab-happy starlet, a rampaging ghoul, and a vampire hunting jackass in tight Wranglers. Marnie figures the only real mystery is which one will kill her first. Too mean to die young, backed up by friends in cold places, and running with a mouth as demure as a cannon's blast, Marnie Baranuik is about to discover that there's no such thing as quitting time when you're Touched.

Every shady government agency in existence playing coverup? Check. But is it murder? Nick Tanaka, vampire homicide detective for the NYPD, stumbles into a political minefield when their new Midnight, a rookie vampire cop straight out of the police academy, shows up dead inside a high security vault. Morley, Nick's boss, wants answers, but no one wants the NYPD on the case. As a favor to Morley, Nick agrees to help, going to his contacts in the military-industrial complex to try and find answers. Instead, he uncovers a conspiracy led by a murderous fanatic and his band of "blood-purity" crazies, who appear to want nothing less than all-out race war. Worse, his hybrid girlfriend, Wynter James, is now in their crosshairs, too. Book #4 of the Vampire Detective Midnight series. Even if it means selling his soul to his vampire sire, and rejoining the dark underground of vampires known as the White Death. Dimitry Yi, infamous anti-vampire extremist, has been missing for weeks. His rabid followers are losing their minds. Dead bodies start appearing around the city, marked with the symbol of Dimitry Yi. Riots break out in vampire neighborhoods, even as bombs go off at government buildings and cafes. New York grows increasingly violent and unstable, bringing pressure from many to just give the terrorists what they want. The message is clear: give them their leader back, or the killings will continue. Worse, now they appear to be targeting Nick, maybe because he's famous as a cage-fighting vampire, but more likely from his role as a Midnight, a vampire homicide detective for the NYPD. Someone knows about Nick's involvement in Dimitry Yi's disappearance, and they will do anything to get him to release Yi - including targeting Nick's girlfriend, an obvious "race-traitor" and blood whore to a vampire. In the end, Nick decides he must look to his own kind for help. Even if that means indebting himself to his sire, Brick, a human-hating vampire with a twisted agenda of his own. Book excerpt: The novel is about the series of eerie and bizarre homicides discovered in New York City where the police find corpses where the blood has been sucked out of the bodies through two neck bite marks suggesting a vampire attack. With six bodies discovered in six months, was this the work of a supernatural being running around the historic and irreplaceable America's largest metropolitan super city... The Big Apple...or someone or something trying to make it look like a vampire attack? After six months, the New York City Mayor decides to bring in more professional help to aide his Investigations Unit in solving these heinous crimes. For the last six months, the Mayor has successfully suppressed these horrific criminalities from the public, but his time is running out and once this knowledge hits the public airwaves the City will go into panic mode; his job will be at stake. The good citizens want safety and will direct their anger and angst at those elected to protect them...and he would be the recipient of their tirade. The Mayor finally decides to bring in Detective William Monroe Lincoln, a retired detective with high profile case experience. The New York City Investigations Unit is against bringing in outside help but they have no choice due to the dire circumstances of sitting on an explosive story with so many bodies that have died in such a unique and disturbing manner. They too know that time is running out in trying to keep these crimes hidden from the public. If the top City Administrator is voted out of office the top Police Department administrators are also vulnerable to job security. The various characters and bizarre circumstances of the murders reveals very few clues to help reveal the perpetrator of this evil. With no help in sight, suddenly there is a telephone call by an individual saying he's the 'Vampire Killer', but this individual is suffering from severe dementia and barely knows who he is. Is he a real clue or just another irrelevant piece of information designed to mislead and confuse the authorities. Detective Lincoln must use his formidable analytical skills to search for the human killer or a vampire running around undetected in the nation's largest City. He will meet 'The Amazing Crystal', a psychic also coming out of retirement to help the City solve the crime. Her insights and suggestions from her psychic 'connections' are general in nature but also amazingly accurate. Is she for real? The police also discover the same strands of hair at two of the murder sites. Is this person the murderer or is it another false lead?
