Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the 1989 Beijing massacre fading from popular memory in the West, China from the mid-1990s to a few years ago felt more open than ever to global trade, communication, travel, and cultural and educational exchanges. There was even talk in the mainstream press that China was heading toward a more democratic future. It was during this second Sino-Western honeymoon that authors in the US, Canada, France, the UK, and elsewhere began writing mystery fiction set in contemporary China in their regional languages. These “China mysteries”—crime, detective, and mystery thriller novels that take place in China but were not written or published there—formed a new genre of popular fiction that highlighted the world’s hopes and fears after Tiananmen. The multinational and multicultural writers of China mysteries, among them ex-PRC nationals like Qiu Xiaolong, Zhang Xinxin, and Diane Wei Liang, converged on the China Mainland to negotiate political and cultural complexities through crime fiction plotlines. Their books emerged from Western lineages of the modern novel and popular genre fiction—with Chinese contributions—and depended on Western commercial publishing models shaped by cultural, national, political, and economic factors. This work examines more than a hundred China mysteries—many describing and analyzing social and economic changes at the center of modern life in China—to provide a brief history of the genre and analyze the formulaic and original elements of the mysteries, including their attention to matters of location, social content, characterization, history, and biography. It also highlights the role of “information” acquisition as a motivation for readers and authors of popular fiction, which has become a topic of discussion in Chinese literature studies. With its timely commentary on Sino-Western relations as presented through crime fiction, China Mysteries will appeal to students and scholars of contemporary Chinese literature and culture, as well as fans of crime novels and others who are curious about the global dimensions of the genre and how it complicates our understanding of “world literature.”

Book excerpt: Remember your senior year of high school and the beginning of college? If you grew up in the sixties, its all right if the answer is no. Mitcha contemporary student who idolizes that time period and participates in many of the same practices as those who really lived during the sixties counter-culture eravividly remembers his transition into this world. What started out as an alternative senior project (one that could never be passed in, of course) has evolved into this recollection of thoughts, trials, and times. Mitchs experiences are shared in a totally unorthodox way, playing with journalistic, analytic, and humoristic styles. Tales of Elevation is focused on, inspired by, and essentially produced by one particularly elevating substance, marijuana. Despite the clichs that surround marijuana and those who appreciate it, Tales of Elevation does not preach or advocate anything. Rather, it provides a firsthand reflection of the ways Mitch and others think, feel, and behave while elevated. Tales of Elevation gives a glimpse into another realm, where music is one of the main religions and high times with good vibes keep the ship going. Those who dabbled with it can definitely dig what goes on in this state. For anyone whos wondered what its like, Tales offers a glimpse of how marijuana can affect you and those around you.

Book excerpt: In Brian Klingborg's Thief of Souls, the brutal murder of a young woman in a rural village in Northern China sends shockwaves all the way to Beijing—but seemingly only Inspector Lu Fei, living in exile in the small town, is interested in justice for the victim. Lu Fei is a graduate of China’s top police college but he’s been assigned to a sleepy backwater town in northern China, where almost nothing happens and the theft of a few chickens represents a major crime wave. That is until a young woman is found dead, her organs removed, and joss paper stuffed in her mouth. The CID in Beijing—headed by a rising political star—is on the case but in an increasingly authoritarian China, prosperity and political stability are far more important than solving the murder of an insignificant village girl. As such, the CID head is interested in pinning the crime on the first available suspect rather than wading into uncomfortable truths, leaving Lu Fei on his own. As Lu digs deeper into the gruesome murder, he finds himself facing old enemies and creating new ones in the form of local Communist Party bosses and corrupt business interests. Despite these rising obstacles, Lu remains determined to find the real killer, especially after he links the murder to other unsolved homicides. But the closer he gets to the heart of the mystery, the more he puts himself and his loved ones in danger.

Book excerpt: The devil is a liar. He is a deceiver, a murderer, and a cheat. The devil takes on many forms to tempt you to do wrong. But what if you could stop him? Would you give up everything to save the world from sin? Or would you rather party in hell with the sinners than be bored in heaven with the saints? When Tex Bryant decides to rid the world of the devil, little does he know he's going to become the very thing he despises most. His journey as the ultimate evil takes him from city to city, where he leaves only destruction in his path. Nothing can save his soul from eternal damnation . . . except perhaps the woman he never stopped loving. Killing the Devil: A Collection of Short Stories explores the journeys of three people as they confront evil in its various forms. Each must choose between the wicked and the good. Paul Michael Peters is author of Insensible Loss, Mr. Memory and Other Stories of Wonder, The Symmetry of Snowflakes, and Peter in Flight. Follow him and his work at paulmichaelpeters.com.

From the bestselling author of Rich and Pretty comes a suspenseful and provocative novel keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class. Leave the World Behind explores how our closest bonds are reshaped—and unexpected new ones are forged—in moments of crisis. Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple—and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one other?
