Book excerpt: For most dog owners and exhibitors, dog show judges are those rather distant figures who are assess their dogs, give critiques and, if all goes well, hand out prizes. But what do judges really think about the handlers and the breed standards? And how do they feel about the common belief that their decisions are sometimes based on who is holding the lead, rather than on the actual quality of the dog being shown? How do judges define what makes a "good" or "bad" judge? We also hear how top handlers and successful breeders view judges and their role in the dog world. Even the photos of judges, breeders and handlers in this book are quite unlike anything we usually see about them. We hope you enjoy reading - already putting the book together was at the same time fun and educational! Pekka Hannula & Marjo Nygård

Book excerpt: The 1970's and 1980's were the boom days of general aviation when learning to fly was easy, cheap and somewhat free from stifling government regulation. Availability of the GI Bill and low fuel prices enabled many, including the author, to learn to fly and add ratings while enjoying the nostalgia provided by the use of the few remaining barnstorming era airfields and training from former World War II pilots. This book memorializes many logbook entries of the author and includes some of the adventures he shared with his friends, family and others while flying small planes and hot air balloons.

Book Synopsis Development and Vulnerability in Close Relationships by : Gil G. Noam
Download or read book Development and Vulnerability in Close Relationships written by Gil G. Noam and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people develop in their important relationships? How do two people come together to form a new, close relationship? How do relationships affect or determine who we are and who we become? These questions should be central to the study of mind and development, but most researchers neglect relationships and focus instead on analyses of individuals, as if people were basically alone, experiencing occasional fleeting moments with other people. Research based on this individualist assumption has dominated the behavioral and clinical sciences, but there are other voices, and they are growing. In this book, many of the scholars who are moving relationships and attachments back to the center of human development outline their central concepts, findings, and perspectives. People are fundamentally social, and relationships are part of the fabric of being human, forming an essential foundation that molds each person's mind and action. A mind does not reside in one person but in relationships and communities, composed of many people's interconnected minds, which mutually support and define each other. From the start and throughout life, each person develops strengths and vulnerabilities in important relationships in communities and cultures. Those relationships are so central to each person's activity and experience that without them, no scientific explanation can even begin to analyze mind and action. There is no mind without other people. There is no psychological vulnerability that does not involve others. The contributors to this book aim to establish a firm foundation for the role of relationships in human activity and health and to promote strong research by bringing together in one place most of the best research and theory on development and relationships. Their goal is to stimulate a more radical inclusion of relationships in mind, an ecological focus on the ways that relationships constitute action, feeling, and thought.

Book Synopsis Flowers for the Judge, Death of a Ghost, and The Case of the Late Pig by : Margery Allingham
Download or read book Flowers for the Judge, Death of a Ghost, and The Case of the Late Pig written by Margery Allingham and published by Ipso Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Albert Campion mysteries in one volume reveal why “Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light” (Agatha Christie). Flowers for the Judge Scandal hits the prestigious publishing house of Barnabas when one of the directors is found dead in a locked cellar. All eyes are on the other partners at the firm—cousins of the dead man with much to gain from his demise—and rumors hint at a connection to the long-ago disappearance of another director. Desperate to salvage their reputation, the cousins turn to Albert Campion—but will his investigations clear the Barnabas family name, or besmirch it forever? “One of her best . . . vivid and witty.” —The New York Times Death of a Ghost John Sebastian Lafcadio’s ambition to be known as the greatest painter since Rembrandt was not to be thwarted by a matter as trifling as his own death. A set of twelve sealed paintings is left in the hands of his widow, together with the instruction that she unveil one canvas each year before a carefully selected audience. Albert Campion is invited to join a cast of gadabouts, muses, and socialites to witness the eighth unveiling—but instead the lights go down and a young man is stabbed to death. Campion must get to work on the baffling case, with its long—suspiciously long—line-up of possible killers, and soon finds himself having to face his dearest enemy. “Wonderfully plotted . . . Allingham was a rare and precious talent.” —The Washington Post The Case of the Late Pig Private detective Albert Campion is summoned to the village of Kepesake to investigate a particularly distasteful death. The body turns out to be that of Pig Peters—freshly killed five months after his own funeral. Soon other corpses start to turn up, just as Peters’s body goes missing. It takes all of Campion’s coolly incisive powers of detection to unravel the crime. Mixing high drama and pitch-perfect black comedy, The Case of the Late Pig is, uniquely, narrated by Campion himself. “Allingham captures her quintessential quiet detective Albert Campion to perfection.”—Daily Express
