Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Greek Prose Composition: With Exercises In composing in any language, the various difficulties to be surmounted may be summed up in three classes - Accidence, Syntax, and Idiom. The Accidence is the first step, and must be learnt from the grammar. These Exercises will perhaps be of use to practise the learner in the cases and inflexions, but a fair acquaintance with them is presumed before starting to write Greek Prose at all The Syntax must also in the main be learned from the grammar; but as the grammar is intended primarily for other purposes than to assist in composition, it has been thought advisable to give here some notes on Greek constructions, arranged so that the learner may readily refer to them, and find what be is likely to want more easily than he could in a grammar. Some hints on Idiom, also, have been given here, so as to guide the student in those places where he is most likely to go wrong, and to suggest to him, without going too much into detail, some ideas on the leading differences between the methods of expression adopted respectively in the English and Greek languages. Book excerpt: With enthusiasm and wry wit, author Jones takes you step by step through the rudiments of the Western World's first great language--the medium of Plato and the New Testament. Introduces the Greek alphabet, explains each grammar point in layman's terms, gives plenty of study hints, provides answers for the exercises, and even presents a "to-do" list at the end of most chapters. Not too far into the book you'll already be reading masterful Greek literature, in extracts chosen from such authors as Plato, Sophocles, and Thucydides. Offers a discussion of Greek history and culture in each chapter, and another feature that looks closely at Greek words, with special emphasis on related words in English.--From publisher description

Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Greek Prose Composition For this Second Edition the original Exercises have been revised and corrected, and the Vocabulary made more complete. The new additional Exercises will, it is hoped, be found useful. I have to thank my colleague, the Rev. H. Belcher, M.A., for his assistance both in emendation and addition. This little volume is designed to exemplify, in as compact a form as possible, the chief points of importance to beginners in Greek Prose Composition; and aims at giving not more, but less, than many valuable Exercise-books already in use. The passages for Prose are not exact translations from the originals; and could be set with or without the Greek, as an easier or harder task might be desired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Greek Composition, Vol. 1: Based Mainly Upon Xenophon's Anabasis College admission requirements in writing Greek practically determine the scope and fix the aim of instruction in the schools. Though these requirements vary in degree, they point to the same end - power and knowledge of the language sufficient for translating easy narrative or address into Attic Greek. So far as amount of acquisition can be approximately measured, nothing could be more reasonable and just. By working consciously and definitely toward that goal by the best method, the learner is sure to derive the highest benefit that the study can yield. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Greek Book I have not hesitated to analyze the forms of the verb, since I believe that this is the quickest and surest way in which to learn them. It is a severe strain upon the memory of the eye and ear to attempt to retain these numerous forms as separate and individual elements. But if the pupil is given a clear conception of the significance of theme, tense stem, and per sonal endings, the strain is greatly relieved. He is then able to construct his paradigms by the combination of a relatively small number of facts, and is not dependent solely on his memory in recalling forms, but reclaims them by a logical process of form-building. This very process fixes them more securely in his mind. I have for the same reasons analyzed the forms of nouns of the consonant declension. The recogni tion here of stem and case endings as distinct elements in combination makes the acquisition of the forms easy. Since the exercises of the lessons consist of sentences and not of phrases, in developing the forms I have had to deal also with laws of construction. Principles of syntax are presented inductively as needed. Examples are given and the general law is developed from particular instances of its use.1 But the subject of Syntax is not made prominent in the first one hundred lessons. Principles which hold good also in Latin or English or in both are taken for granted, being at most referred to in a foot-note. Moreover, single occurrences of constructions not in themselves difficult are explained by a mere statement of the fact in a foot-note. Difficult constructions have been avoided in selecting the sentences for these exercises, and with the same object in view the sentences have often been simplified.
