Book Synopsis Human Error in Aviation by : R.Key Dismukes
Download or read book Human Error in Aviation written by R.Key Dismukes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most aviation accidents are attributed to human error, pilot error especially. Human error also greatly effects productivity and profitability. In his overview of this collection of papers, the editor points out that these facts are often misinterpreted as evidence of deficiency on the part of operators involved in accidents. Human factors research reveals a more accurate and useful perspective: The errors made by skilled human operators - such as pilots, controllers, and mechanics - are not root causes but symptoms of the way industry operates. The papers selected for this volume have strongly influenced modern thinking about why skilled experts make errors and how to make aviation error resilient.
Book Synopsis Key Topics in Public Health by : Linda Ewles
Download or read book Key Topics in Public Health written by Linda Ewles and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2005-05-23 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key Topics is a short, easy-to-read text that provides basic information about twelve key topics in public health, such as diabetes, cancer, smoking and teenage pregnancy, and how prevention and health promotion should be tackled at community and one-to-one levels. The twelve topics are the 'must-dos' of public health action. They have been selected because they are those addressed in current national public health strategies such as Saving Lives: our healthier nation , and comparable strategies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Many are the subject of National Service Frameworks and other national policies and plans; they are often accompanied by targets which health workers are expected to meet. Accessible and useful, in clear plain English. Provides a foundation for further study, planning a work programme, or planning a strategy to meet targets. Practical focus: on health inequalities and how to tackle them, and on help for practitioners who work at a community and one-to-one level. Explicit links to national current public health policy and targets. Reflects recommendations based on best practice and evidence of effectiveness. Focuses on a topic framework (except for the last two chapters) in contrast to other frameworks for health promotion and public health. Attractive layout making full use of bullet points and boxes. Simple line diagrams or tables to illustrate each chapter.

Book Synopsis Communicating With Intelligence by : James S. Major
Download or read book Communicating With Intelligence written by James S. Major and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-03-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since September 11, 2001, colleges and universities nationwide have expanded their curricula to include intelligence and national security studies, many offering degrees in the subjects. Curiously, no book exists for classroom use in teaching the important skills needed by these professionals to ensure their products/papers/reports are properly written or briefed. Communicating with Intelligence fills that gap and is aimed primarily at faculty and students pursuing studies in intelligence, national security, homeland security, or homeland defense; but it also has considerable value for working intelligence professionals who simply wish to hone their "rusty" writing or briefing skills. Designed to provide essential information regarding the preparation of written products or intelligence briefings, the book is divided into two parts. Part One, "Writing with Intelligence," contains material on reading intelligence publications and on the basics of writing in the intelligence profession. Part Two, "Briefing with Intelligence," deals with the fundamental principles of an intelligence briefing and includes information on gaining—or regaining—self-confidence behind the podium. Every chapter ends with exercises, many of which can be completed in the classroom to facilitate group activity or by an individual pursuing the study independently. Five appendixes provide additional information for quick reference and an annotated bibliography points toward further sources that can be used.

Book Synopsis Bound by Our Constitution by : Vivien Hart
Download or read book Bound by Our Constitution written by Vivien Hart and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What difference does a written constitution make to public policy? How have women workers fared in a nation bound by constitutional principles, compared with those not covered by formal, written guarantees of fair procedure or equitable outcome? To investigate these questions, Vivien Hart traces the evolution of minimum wage policies in the United States and Britain from their common origins in women's politics around 1900 to their divergent outcomes in our day. She argues, contrary to common wisdom, that the advantage has been with the American constitutional system rather than the British. Basing her analysis on primary research, Hart reconstructs legal strategies and policy decisions that revolved around the recognition of women as workers and the public definition of gender roles. Contrasting seismic shifts and expansion in American minimum wage policy with indifference and eventual abolition in Britain, she challenges preconceptions about the constraints of American constitutionalism versus British flexibility. Though constitutional requirements did block and frustrate women's attempts to gain fair wages, they also, as Hart demonstrates, created a terrain in the United States for principled debate about women, work, and the state--and a momentum for public policy--unparalleled in Britain. Hart's book should be of interest to policy, labor, women's, and legal historians, to political scientists, and to students of gender issues, law, and social policy.
