Book excerpt: When it comes to reducing body fat, a ketogenic diet that is combined with a negative energy balance can be particularly effective, in addition to offering numerous health benefits. With the so-called ketogenic reduction diet, fat burning can be activated in such a way that a diet-related energy deficit can be compensated directly via the body's own stored fat reserves. This way, it's possible to avoid hunger and reduced performance. This makes sticking to the ketogenic reduction diet easier than other diets. No matter how much weight should be lost, either with or without sport, and regardless of age and gender, the ketogenic reduction diet ensures that everyone becomes the perfect fat burner.

Book excerpt: Are you an athlete seeking to improve performance and lose weight? An ordinary citizen wanting to improve Type 2 diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular conditions? "The Ketosis Diet - Ketogenic Diet Tips Made Simple" may provide the introduction you need. In simple, straight-forward language, author Amy Zulpa explains what it is, the various types of ketogenic diet, and who should benefit from it. She also includes a handy range of recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not many people are familiar with the Ketosis diet (Ketogenic diet) as it is promoted far less than the fad diets are. It's also a little different, as it focuses on the consumption of high fats and a reasonable amount of protein with less focus on the consumption of carbohydrates. This diet was primarily geared to treat epilepsy in children, but over the years it has been found to benefit a number of other conditions. The main aim is to get the body to burn fats and not carbohydrates. As more fats are consumed, the body breaks them down into ketones and fatty acids which are used as energy. This burning of fats helps to trigger the weight loss process. The author explains all of this and more in the text, providing adequate definitions where they are needed as well as some great recipes to get you started.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society of Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT) was founded in 1973 to provide a forum for bioengineers, basic scientists, physiologists, and physicians to discuss new data, original theories, new interpretations of old data, and new technologies for the measurement of oxygen. At each annual meeting all posters are presented orally along with plenary lectures, and all presentations are given in a general session attended by everyone. Each meeting has had a specific focus, ranging from neonatology to physical chemistry to cancer biology. The Society has helped to build many careers, through opportunities to meet leaders in the field, and through awards made to young physicians and scientists. The Society also, through cross fertilization of ideas and scientific comradery, has inspired many breakthroughs in clinical medicine that now benefit mankind. I find myself president of the society after having been a winner of the Melvin Knisely Award for young scientists, in 1991. The 2003 meeting emphasized the role of oxygen and oxygen measurement in tumor growth, metastasis, physiology, and treatment resistance. Additionally, however, completely novel approaches to measurement of tissue oxygen were presented (notably work by Dr. Takahashi) and molecular methods for estimating tissue oxygen were evaluated. Papers discussing other aspects of oxygen measurement and pathophysiology were presented including in vivo ESR spectroscopy (notably including Dr. Swartz and colleagues), exercise physiology, organ transplant outcome (discussed by Dr. Cicco, our 2004 president), circulatory physiology, and cerebral oxygenation (notably including Dr. Chance).
