Book excerpt: Neutrinos continue to be the most mysterious and, arguably, the most fascinating particles of the Standard Model as their intrinsic properties such as absolute mass scale and CP properties are unknown. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed with unprecedented accuracy by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesis focusses on the spectrometer part of KATRIN and background processes therein. Various background sources such as small Penning traps, as well as nuclear decays from single radon atoms are fully characterized here for the first time. Most importantly, however, it was possible to reduce the background in the spectrometer by more than five orders of magnitude by eliminating Penning traps and by developing a completely new background reduction method by stochastically heating trapped electrons using electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). The work beautifully demonstrates that the obstacles and challenges in measuring the absolute mass scale of neutrinos can be met successfully if novel experimental tools (ECR) and novel computing methods (KASSIOPEIA) are combined to allow almost background-free tritium ß-spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: This book describes for the first time how Monte Carlo modeling methods can be applied to electron microscopy and microanalysis. Computer programs for two basic types of Monte Carlo simulation are developed from physical models of the electron scattering process--a single scattering program capable of high accuracy but requiring long computation times, and a plural scattering program which is less accurate but much more rapid. Optimized for use on personal computers, the programs provide a real time graphical display of the interaction. The programs are then used as the starting point for the development of programs aimed at studying particular effects in the electron microscope, including backscattering, secondary electron production, EBIC and cathodo-luminescence imaging, and X-ray microanalysis. The computer code is given in a fully annotated format so that it may be readily modified for specific problems. Throughout, the author includes numerous examples of how such applications can be used. Students and professionals using electron microscopes will want to read this important addition to the literature.

The code has been instrumental in determining the range of validity for the widely used condensed history method. This task was accomplished by isolating and testing the condensed history assumptions. The results show that the condensed history method fails for low energy electron transport due to inaccuracies in energy loss and spatial positioning. 19 refs., 21 figs., 1 tab.

The mechanisms described focus on the shape of the Compton edge, the magnitude of the flat continuum, and the shape of the exponential tailsfeatures. These features are not accurately predicted by previous Monte Carlosimulation. Probable interaction mechanisms for each detector responsecomponent is given based on this Monte Carlo simulation. Precollision momentum of the electron is considered when simulating incoherentscattering of the photon. The description of the Doppler broadened photonenergy spectrum corrects the shape of the Compton edge. Special attention isgiven to partial energy loss mechanisms in the frontal region of the detectorlike the escape of photoelectric and Auger electrons or low-energy X-rays from the detector surface. The results include a possible physical mechanismdescribing the exponential tail feature that is generated by a separate MonteCarlo simulation. Also included is a description of a convolution effect thataccounts for the difference in magnitude of the flat continuum in the MonteCarlo simulation and experimental spectra. The convolution describes anenhanced electron loss. Results of these applications are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monte Carlo simulation is now a well established method for studying semiconductor devices and is particularly well suited to highlighting physical mechanisms and exploring material properties. Not surprisingly, the more completely the material properties are built into the simulation, up to and including the use of a full band structure, the more powerful is the method. Indeed, it is now becoming increasingly clear that phenomena such as reliabil ity related hot-electron effects in MOSFETs cannot be understood satisfac torily without using full band Monte Carlo. The IBM simulator DAMOCLES, therefore, represents a landmark of great significance. DAMOCLES sums up the total of Monte Carlo device modeling experience of the past, and reaches with its capabilities and opportunities into the distant future. This book, therefore, begins with a description of the IBM simulator. The second chapter gives an advanced introduction to the physical basis for Monte Carlo simulations and an outlook on why complex effects such as collisional broadening and intracollisional field effects can be important and how they can be included in the simulations. References to more basic intro the book. The third chapter ductory material can be found throughout describes a typical relationship of Monte Carlo simulations to experimental data and indicates a major difficulty, the vast number of deformation poten tials required to simulate transport throughout the entire Brillouin zone. The fourth chapter addresses possible further extensions of the Monte Carlo approach and subtleties of the electron-electron interaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of published papers in the scientific journals present the idea, the method and the results of calculation without codes (programs). The students and researches need the algorithms and programs to create their own models of calculation to simulate the interaction of electron beam with matter in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique. This book presents free codes (free programs) of calculation of the electron matter interaction phenomena. This book contents six chapters. Chapter one is an introduction. Chapter two presents summary of Monte Carlo method. This phenomenon occurs inside the material bombarded by an electron beam during the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis, with some examples concerning the generation of random numbers and calculation of number π. In the chapter number three, the author presents a description of electron-matter interaction phenomena like the random random diffusion, electron depth and electron interaction volume. In order to explain the random diffusion of electrons inside the material, two dimensions x and y are used to calculate the trajectory of electron. A spherical coordinates are used to calculate the electron paths inside the material. The electron interaction volume depends on the accelerating energy and the materials parameters. Approximately it can be considered as a sphere with a radius equal depth/2 In the fourth chapter, the theory of cathodoluminescence(CL) technique is presented with some fortran programs calculation of the carrier excess and CL signal of gallium arsenide (GaAs). The CathodoLuminescence technique (CL) performed in the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a method based on the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs generated inside the material when it is bombarded by an electron beam, it is collected as a light (CL signal). Monte Carlo method is used to describe the random electron diffusion and random interaction with atoms inside the material. The electron excess and phonon excess are generated during the collision of the incident electron with the material units (atoms, molecules, defects ...) of the target material via random walk process. After each collision, the electron loses a certain amount of energy generating one electron-hole and certain energy to generate one phonon. The cathodoluminescence CL signal is the radiation (visible or invisible) due the radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs generated inside the materials after collisions (inelastic scattering) of accelerated electrons (electron beam) with atoms of materials. To calculate the CL signal , the sample is divided into several horizontal zones; at each zone, a quantity of electron_hole pairs is generated. This carrier excess will be transformed into light (CL signal). The electron beam indecent current (EBIC) is described in the fifth chapter. After the random collisions of electrons with the atoms inside the material, an electron-hole excess is generated Δe-h , due to the metal-semiconductor contact (Schottky barrier), some quantity of carriers (electrons and holes) diffuses in two different directions (without recombination) in order to create induced current. This phenomenon depends on the diffusion length of electrons and material parameters. In this model, the sample (material under electron bombardment) is divided into several zones, inside each zone, a quantity of electron-hole pairs is generated, this carrier excess will be transformed into current by application of an exterior electric field (contact Schottky or P-N junction). The results can be changed according to the position of Shottky contact (or P-N junction), that depends on distances and sample orientation. The electron beam heating (temperature rise) is detailed in the chapter number six. The results of calculation present the variation of temperature rise of apatite material as a function of depth with different values of probe current and scanning duration.
