Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keshab Chandra Sen and the Brahma Samaj: Being a Brief Review of Indian Theism From 1830 to 1884; Together With Selections From Mr. Sen's Works Others, again, while taking much interest in the movement, as one that is feeling its way towards Christianity, have only a vague notion respecting it, and desire to know more of its history and beliefs. For it is a religious departure, which, in having been co-ordinate and concurrent with the most active era of Christian Missions in India, the Christian Church cannot afford to overlook. While light from the Western churches has been Shining long upon this land, and with but partial effect, another light has seemingly been slowly rising from a different quarter, even from the East itself but since all light in god's world is one, the day must surely come when they will blend. Book Synopsis Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 by : James Gregory
Download or read book Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 written by James Gregory and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning over 2 centuries, James Gregory's Mercy and British Culture, 1760 -1960 provides a wide-reaching yet detailed overview of the concept of mercy in British cultural history. While there are many histories of justice and punishment, mercy has been a neglected element despite recognition as an important feature of the 18th-century criminal code. Mercy and British Culture, 1760-1960 looks first at mercy's religious and philosophical aspects, its cultural representations and its embodiment. It then looks at large-scale mobilisation of mercy discourses in Ireland, during the French Revolution, in the British empire, and in warfare from the American war of independence to the First World War. This study concludes by examining mercy's place in a twentieth century shaped by total war, atomic bomb, and decolonisation.
Book Synopsis Crisis and Religious Renewal in the Brahmo Samaj, 1860-1884 by : Frans L. Damen
Download or read book Crisis and Religious Renewal in the Brahmo Samaj, 1860-1884 written by Frans L. Damen and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1983 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a scholarly book mainly concerned with the Brahmo Samaj of India, the sect led by Keshab, which separated from the original Brahmo Samaj, led by Devendranath Tagore, in 1866, and with the New Dispensation sect led by Keshab after the split which emerged in the Brahmo Samaj of India in 1878. The author's interest is in the religious life of these groups rather than in their theology, and he comments that the emphasis of previous writing has been biographical and doctrinal. There is much detailed information about liturgical and devotional changes. These were many: Keshab was ever anxious to gain converts, but the author argues convincingly that the use of Bengali for liturgical purposes and of English for public lectures meant that in northern India the Brahmo Samaj continued to appeal only to the Bengali middle class rather than to local people who spoke Hindi or Panjabi.
