Book excerpt: In fixed design kernel nonparametic regression, there has been a paucity of results for models which allow for correlated errors. Consider repeated measurements models, applicable in growth curve analysis. It is assumed that the matrix elements may be represented as the product of a scalar variance term and a suitably restricted correlation function. Asympototic expansions of the mean squared error of the Gasser Mueller kernel estimator of an arbitrary pth derivation of g are obtained for two general classes of correlation functions. Consistency and other results based on such expansions are discussed for orders p=1 and p=2. Keywords: Nonparametric regression; Growth curves; Correlated data; Optimum bandwidth; Mean integrated squared error; Gasser Mueller estimator.

Book excerpt: Kernel smoothing refers to a general methodology for recovery of underlying structure in data sets. The basic principle is that local averaging or smoothing is performed with respect to a kernel function. This book provides uninitiated readers with a feeling for the principles, applications, and analysis of kernel smoothers. This is facilitated by the authors' focus on the simplest settings, namely density estimation and nonparametric regression. They pay particular attention to the problem of choosing the smoothing parameter of a kernel smoother, and also treat the multivariate case in detail. Kernal Smoothing is self-contained and assumes only a basic knowledge of statistics, calculus, and matrix algebra. It is an invaluable introduction to the main ideas of kernel estimation for students and researchers from other discipline and provides a comprehensive reference for those familiar with the topic.

Book excerpt: This Special Publication highlights the importance of clays and clayey material, and their multiple roles, in many national geological disposal facilities for higher activity radioactive wastes. Clays can be both the disposal facility host rock and part of its intrinsic engineered barriers, and may be present in the surrounding geological environment. Clays possess various characteristics that make them high-quality barriers to the migration of radionuclides and chemical contaminants, e.g. very little water movement, diffusive transport, retention capacity, self-sealing capacity, stability over millions of years, homogeneity and lateral continuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic and unified approach for modern nonparametric treatment of missing and modified data via examples of density and hazard rate estimation, nonparametric regression, filtering signals, and time series analysis. All basic types of missing at random and not at random, biasing, truncation, censoring, and measurement errors are discussed, and their treatment is explained. Ten chapters of the book cover basic cases of direct data, biased data, nondestructive and destructive missing, survival data modified by truncation and censoring, missing survival data, stationary and nonstationary time series and processes, and ill-posed modifications. The coverage is suitable for self-study or a one-semester course for graduate students with a prerequisite of a standard course in introductory probability. Exercises of various levels of difficulty will be helpful for the instructor and self-study. The book is primarily about practically important small samples. It explains when consistent estimation is possible, and why in some cases missing data should be ignored and why others must be considered. If missing or data modification makes consistent estimation impossible, then the author explains what type of action is needed to restore the lost information. The book contains more than a hundred figures with simulated data that explain virtually every setting, claim, and development. The companion R software package allows the reader to verify, reproduce and modify every simulation and used estimators. This makes the material fully transparent and allows one to study it interactively. Sam Efromovich is the Endowed Professor of Mathematical Sciences and the Head of the Actuarial Program at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is well known for his work on the theory and application of nonparametric curve estimation and is the author of Nonparametric Curve Estimation: Methods, Theory, and Applications. Professor Sam Efromovich is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association.

These methods are simple to understand and they possess very good statistical properties. This book provides a concise and comprehensive overview of statistical theory and in addition, emphasis is given to the implementation of presented methods in Matlab. All created programs are included in a special toolbox which is an integral part of the book. This toolbox contains many Matlab scripts useful for kernel smoothing of density, cumulative distribution function, regression function, hazard function, indices of quality and bivariate density. Specifically, methods for choosing a choice of the optimal bandwidth and a special procedure for simultaneous choice of the bandwidth, the kernel and its order are implemented. The toolbox is divided into six parts according to the chapters of the book. All scripts are included in a user interface and it is easy to manipulate with this interface. Each chapter of the book contains a detailed help for the related part of the toolbox too. This book is intended for newcomers to the field of smoothing techniques and would also be appropriate for a wide audience: advanced graduate, PhD students and researchers from both the statistical science and interface disciplines.

Book excerpt: About three years ago, an idea was discussed among some colleagues in the Division of Statistics at the University of California, Davis, as to the possibility of holding an international conference, focusing exclusively on nonparametric curve estimation. The fruition of this idea came about with the enthusiastic support of this project by Luc Devroye of McGill University, Canada, and Peter Robinson of the London School of Economics, UK. The response of colleagues, contacted to ascertain interest in participation in such a conference, was gratifying and made the effort involved worthwhile. Devroye and Robinson, together with this editor and George Metakides of the University of Patras, Greece and of the European Economic Communities, Brussels, formed the International Organizing Committee for a two week long Advanced Study Institute (ASI) sponsored by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was held on the Greek Island of Spetses between July 29 and August 10, 1990. Nonparametric functional estimation is a central topic in statistics, with applications in numerous substantive fields in mathematics, natural and social sciences, engineering and medicine. While there has been interest in nonparametric functional estimation for many years, this has grown of late, owing to increasing availability of large data sets and the ability to process them by means of improved computing facilities, along with the ability to display the results by means of sophisticated graphical procedures.

Book excerpt: Many econometric models contain unknown functions as well as finite- dimensional parameters. Examples of such unknown functions are the distribution function of an unobserved random variable or a transformation of an observed variable. Econometric methods for estimating population parameters in the presence of unknown functions are called "semiparametric." During the past 15 years, much research has been carried out on semiparametric econometric models that are relevant to empirical economics. This book synthesizes the results that have been achieved for five important classes of models. The book is aimed at graduate students in econometrics and statistics as well as professionals who are not experts in semiparametic methods. The usefulness of the methods will be illustrated with applications that use real data.

Book excerpt: Measurement Data Modeling and Parameter Estimation integrates mathematical theory with engineering practice in the field of measurement data processing. Presenting the first-hand insights and experiences of the authors and their research group, it summarizes cutting-edge research to facilitate the application of mathematical theory in measurement and control engineering, particularly for those interested in aeronautics, astronautics, instrumentation, and economics. Requiring a basic knowledge of linear algebra, computing, and probability and statistics, the book illustrates key lessons with tables, examples, and exercises. It emphasizes the mathematical processing methods of measurement data and avoids the derivation procedures of specific formulas to help readers grasp key points quickly and easily. Employing the theories and methods of parameter estimation as the fundamental analysis tool, this reference: Introduces the basic concepts of measurements and errors Applies ideas from mathematical branches, such as numerical analysis and statistics, to the modeling and processing of measurement data Examines methods of regression analysis that are closely related to the mathematical processing of dynamic measurement data Covers Kalman filtering with colored noises and its applications Converting time series models into problems of parameter estimation, the authors discuss modeling methods for the true signals to be estimated as well as systematic errors. They provide comprehensive coverage that includes model establishment, parameter estimation, abnormal data detection, hypothesis tests, systematic errors, trajectory parameters, and modeling of radar measurement data. Although the book is based on the authors’ research and teaching experience in aeronautics and astronautics data processing, the theories and methods introduced are applicable to processing dynamic measurement data across a wide range of fields.
