Book excerpt: Richard Kern is renowned for his underground films, and for his pithy remark "If the model is the exhibitionist then I am the voyeur." "The New York Times" has called his pornography-influenced images "uncommonly visceral instances of the so-called male gaze." Some folks just call them porn: his publication credits include the magazines "Barely Legal, Finally Legal, Tight, Candy Girls" and "Juggs." Kern was born in North Carolina in 1954, and has lived and worked in New York City for some 30 years. In the 80s, he produced a series of short films since recognized as the central works of the movement that has come to be called the Cinema of Transgression. In the 90s he moved back to still photography while occasionally directing music videos for performers like Sonic Youth and Marilyn Manson. He has shown his work around the world at venues including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the London Institute of Contemporary Art and New York's Feature, Inc. This is his tenth monograph, following titles including "Kern Noir, New York Girls" and "Model Release." It is the first to focus exclusively on his digital work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an NPR veteran, a “comprehensive and lucid” guide to “the values and practices that yield stellar audio journalism” (Booklist). Maybe you’re thinking about starting a podcast, and want some tips from the pros. Or perhaps storytelling has always been a passion of yours, and you want to learn to do it more effectively. Whatever the case—whether you’re an avid NPR listener or you aspire to create your own audio, or both—Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio Journalism and Production will give you a rare tour of the world of a professional broadcaster. Jonathan Kern, a former executive producer of All Things Considered who has trained NPR’s on-air staff for years, is a gifted guide, able to narrate a day in the life of a host and lay out the nuts and bolts of production with both wit and warmth. Along the way, he explains the importance of writing the way you speak, reveals how NPR books guests ranging from world leaders to neighborhood newsmakers, and gives sage advice on everything from proposing stories to editors to maintaining balance and objectivity. Best of all—because NPR wouldn’t be NPR without its array of distinctive voices—lively examples from popular shows and colorful anecdotes from favorite personalities animate each chapter. As public radio’s audience of millions can attest, NPR’s unique guiding principles and technical expertise combine to connect with listeners like no other medium can. With today’s technologies allowing more people to turn their home computers into broadcast studios, Sound Reporting is a valuable guide that reveals the secrets behind NPR’s success.

Parents spend an awful lot of time negotiating with their kids—over everyday requests, rules and policies, and big decisions, and often end up derailed and frustrated. In Negotiating at Home, Kurtzberg and Kern offer parents a chance to look more closely at what they already do well (and why) and what can be done better. Grounded in decades of research on how to negotiate effectively, parents will learn about how to plan, recognize specific tactics, communicate and work in partnerships with other family members, address fairness, and handle conflict.

Andrea Kern argues that we can disarm this skeptical doubt by conceiving knowledge as an act of a rational capacity. In this book, she develops a metaphysics of the mind as existing through knowledge of itself.

Book excerpt: A former heroin addict himself, Kern?s photos offer the opportunity to stare into the far more insidious face of contemporary prescription drug addiction. On the genesis of the project, Kern has said, ?A woman working for me a few years ago told me that she was very jittery because she had taken too much Adderall. When I asked her about taking meds, she said that all of her friends took them too.? The resulting images?young women in their underwear holding up their pill bottles (Valium and Klonopin, but also Relpax, a treatment for migraines) and birth control packets against a background of their own cozily haphazard bathrooms and bedrooms?fall somewhere between scenes of confession and screen grabs from a YouTube tutorial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition ensures the legacy of the original 1950 classic, Process Heat Transfer, by Donald Q. Kern that by many is held to be the gold standard. This second edition book is divided into three parts: Fundamental Principles; Heat Exchangers; and Other Heat Transfer Equipment/ Considerations. Part I provides a series of chapters concerned with introductory topics that are required when solving heat transfer problems. This part of the book deals with topics such as steady-state heat conduction, unsteady-state conduction, forced convection, free convection, and radiation. Part II is considered by the authors to be the "meat" of the book, and the primary reason for undertaking this project. Other than minor updates, Part II remains relatively unchanged from the first edition. Notably, it includes Kern's original design methodology for double-pipe, shell-and-tube, and extended surface heat exchangers. Part II also includes boiling and condensation, boilers, cooling towers and quenchers, as well as newly designed open-ended problems. Part III of the book examines other related topics of interest, including refrigeration and cryogenics, batch and unsteady-state processes, health & safety, and the accompanying topic of risk. In addition, this part also examines the impact of entropy calculations on exchanger design. A 36-page Appendix includes 12 tables of properties, layouts and design factors. WHAT IS NEW IN THE 2ND EDITION Changes that are addressed in the 2nd edition so that Kern's original work continues to remain relevant in 21st century process engineering include: Updated Heat Exchanger Design Increased Number of Illustrative Examples Energy Conservation/ Entropy Considerations Environmental Considerations Health & Safety Risk Assessment Refrigeration and Cryogenics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS EDITION HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A NEWER EDITION From about 1880 to World War I, sweeping changes in technology and culture created new modes of understanding and experiencing time and space. Stephen Kern writes about the onrush of technics that reshaped life concretely--telephone, electric lighting, steamship, skyscraper, bicycle, cinema, plane, x-ray, machine gun-and the cultural innovations that shattered older forms of art and thought--the stream-of-consciousness novel, psychoanalysis, Cubism, simultaneous poetry, relativity, and the introduction of world standard time. Kern interprets this generation's revolutionized sense of past, present, and future, and of form, distance, and direction. This overview includes such figures as Proust Joyce, Mann, Wells, Gertrude Stein, Strindberg, Freud, Husserl, Apollinaire, Conrad, Picasso, and Einstein, as well as diverse sources of popular culture drawn from journals, newspapers, and magazines. It also treats new developments in personal and social relations including scientific management, assembly lines, urbanism, imperialism, and trench warfare. While exploring transformed spatial-temporal dimensions, the book focuses on the way new sensibilities subverted traditional values. Kern identifies a broad leveling of cultural hierarchies such as the Cubist breakdown of the conventional distinction between the prominent subject and the framing background, and he argues that these levelings parallel the challenge to aristocratic society, the rise of democracy, and the death of God. This entire reworking of time and space is shown finally to have influenced the conduct of diplomacy during the crisis of July 1914 and to havestructured the Cubist war that followed.
