Book excerpt: The Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) is a standardized test that measures the knowledge and understanding of pharmacy law and regulations in the United States. It is typically required for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians seeking licensure in a particular state or jurisdiction. The exam is developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) and is administered electronically at designated testing centers. The questions on the MPJE exam cover a wide range of topics related to pharmacy law and regulation, including federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing pharmacy practice, licensure requirements, drug enforcement, and patient safety. In fact there are different exam versions for different states. Although the exam covers many similar topics, each state has its own specific laws and regulations related to pharmacy practice. Therefore, the MPJE is tailored to reflect the laws and regulations of the specific state where the candidate is seeking licensure. This book covers the Kentucky exam. We create these self-practice test questions module referencing the concepts and principles currently valid in the exam. Each question comes with an answer and a short explanation which aids you in seeking further study information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text serves as an accessible introduction to the law of contract. The headings chosen for examination track the main points in the lifetime of a contract-from its formation, drafting, and onward to its eventual dissolution, whether this occurs due to the terms of the contract, the will of the parties, or because of a breach of the agreed terms. It also provides studies of other notable areas within the subject, such as third-party rights, damages, and equitable remedies. In distinction to other guides to contract law, this text provides a comparative analysis of the area, incorporating sources drawn from both the civil law tradition, characteristic of several nations within Continental Europe, as well as the Anglo-American common law tradition, with cases and legislation drawn from England and the United States of America. It also explores contract law in the unique context of so-called hybrid jurisdictions-those that incorporate elements of both the common law and civilian traditions. As business assumes a global dimension, knowledge of the operation of contract law across various legal traditions and national contexts is increasingly at a premium. This text enables the student to gain a coherent vision of contract law, as well as to speak confidently when discussing the intricacies of the subject.

Book excerpt: "An excellent resource for entry-level courses on bioethics for health care practitioners, law students, and physicians." -- Choice "Dworkin's provocative arguments... will challenge readers who have come to accept the law's intrusion as a necessary response to biomedical advances." -- New England Journal of Medicine "Important and refreshing. Dworkin's conclusions regarding the limited role of law (and especially legislation) may come as a surprise to many.... When popular and political views are almost evenly divided, looking to legislation for a solution is a mistake." -- Walter Wadlington The ethical and social dilemmas associated with abortion, sterilization, assisted reproduction, genetics, death and dying, and biomedical research have led many to turn to the legal system for solutions. Rogert Dworkin argues that resort to law often overlooks the limitations of legal institutions, and he suggests a more limited use of the legal system will produce more effective resolution of bioethical dilemmas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New History of Vaccines for Infectious Diseases: Immunization - Chance and Necessity covers the developments of vaccines and how they have obliterated many fatal diseases and infections over time. The book treads a neutral path but does not avoid discussion. As uncertainty in the outcome of vaccination can only be determined by experiment, the path to vaccine development has been scientifically complex because the immune system and the manner in which humans respond to infection is variable and complex. Finally, the book describes the risks and benefits of vaccines in a visibly objective manner. - 2023 PROSE Awards - Winner: Finalist: History of Science, Medicine, and Technology: Association of American Publishers - Gives an objective description of the science behind vaccine discovery - Presents awareness and discussions on controversies, both past and present - Provides historical context to the scientific aspects of immunization, including what worked, what didn't, and why - Written by a scientist with no 'vested interest' in vaccine development - Clears up many misunderstandings for today's vaccination policies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition is one of the most important factors controlling the distribution and abundance of living creatures. Sperm cells racing up reproductive tracts, beetle larvae battling inside single seeds, birds defending territories, and trees interfering with the light available to neighbours, are all engaged in competition for limited resources. Along with predation and mutualism, competition is one of the three major biological forces that assemble living communities. Recent experimental work, much of it only from the last few decades, has enhanced human knowledge of the prevalence of competition in nature. There are acacia trees that use ants to damage vines, beetles that compete in arenas for access to dung balls, tadpoles that apparently poison their neighbours, birds that smash the eggs of potential competitors, and plants that associate with fungi in order to increase access to soil resources. While intended as an up-to-date reference work on the state of this branch of ecology, the many non-technical examples will make interesting reading for those with a general interest in nature. Greatly expanded from the first prize-winning edition, there are entirely new chapters, including one on resources and another on competition gradients in nature. The author freely ranges across all major taxonomic groups in search of evidence. The question of whether competition occurs is no longer useful, the author maintains; rather the challenge is to determine when and where each kind of competition is important in natural systems. For this reason, variants of competition such as intensity, asymmetry and hierarchies are singled out for particular attention. The book concludes with the difficulties of finding general principles in complex ecological communities, and illustrates the limitations on knowledge that arise out of the biased conduct of scientists themselves. Competition can be found elsewhere in living systems other than ecological communities, at sub-microscopic scales in the interactions of enzymes and neural pathways, and over large geographic areas in the spread of human populations and contrasting ideas about the world. Human societies are therefore also examined for evidence of the kinds of competition found among other living organisms. Using an array of historical examples, including Biblical conflicts, the use of noblemen's sons in the Crusades, the Viking raids in Europe, strategic bombing campaigns in the Second World War, and ethnic battles of the Balkans, the book illustrates how most of the aspects of competition illustrated with plants and animals can be extended to the interactions of human beings and their societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a must-have, quick review of federal pharmacy law, regulations, and agencies. This is perfect for anyone taking a state MPJE exam. If you are like most pharmacists or pharmacy students, you enjoy taking care of patients, identifying drug therapy problems, and making a difference by using your expert knowledge about medications. Unfortunately, having a basic understanding of laws, regulations, and regulatory agencies that impact the profession is a necessary evil. If you cannot pass the state law exam (MPJE), you can't work as a pharmacist and do all the really cool things that you've wanted to do (including pay off your student loans). MPJE Master: Federal Pharmacy Law Review was intended to simplify the process of learning pharmacy law. We've outlined critical components of federal pharmacy law that you will need to know to pass your MPJE exam. I was always the student in school that needed to highlight the most important information to remember and then I would memorize that information. Recalling information from a large textbook was always difficult for me. Rather than reading a textbook, we've supplied the information in easily digestible, bite-sized pieces. We've used bullet points to help you be able to quickly memorize important facts about each agency, regulation, law, etc. We've also created a super-helpful list of questions within the book to help you identify areas of pharmacy practice where state laws can often vary. This table is a list of questions that you can fill in as you read your respective states' laws and regulations. We've added this to ensure that you don't overlook the important differences in pharmacy laws across the United States. Whether you are a new graduate who needs to pass your law exam to begin your practice or a 20-year veteran who is moving to a new state, this review will absolutely help prepare you to pass your MPJE law exam and help you obtain your pharmacy license.

Book excerpt: One doctor's career began more than half a century ago, during World War II; another's began only recently, near the start of the new millennium. One scientist was a Kentucky farm girl who had never dreamed of going to college; another survived the cultural re-education prescribed for intellectuals under China's late Chairman Mao. Despite various backgrounds, these women in science at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine have much in common with each other, and, they hope, with women who will come after. Twenty-seven female scientists share their personal stories of life in academic research. They reveal their family backgrounds and how they became interested in science, research, and medicine. Each relates her educational growth, professional successes and struggles, and life experiences. Time after time, these doctors stress the joy of discovery and the keys to success: caring mentors, strong time management skills, and supportive friends and family.
